Victoria Gaskin, Wirral: You said at the start of the season that Luton Town would be relegated. Do you stand by that prediction?

Phil: I don’t exactly stand by it any more, Victoria. Maybe I sort of lean on it. I have to confess I have been surprised, pleasantly, by just how good Luton Town have been this season.

I was at Kenilworth Road yesterday when they pushed another of the so-called elite, Manchester United, very close. They play with such energy and belief, as well as being backed by an amazing atmosphere. If they keep playing at they are then I wouldn’t rule them out staying up.

West Ham boss David MoyesImage source, Getty Images

@win_n10 on X: From the outside looking in, West Ham are in terrible form and out of both domestic cups but are still in top 10 in PL and in Europa League last 16. Is it glass half-full or half-empty and what does that mean for David Moyes’ future?

Phil: Great question. Lots of people from the outside will look at West Ham United and wonder what is going on and why there seems to be a groundswell of toxicity towards David Moyes.

After all, he did win the Europa Conference League last season but there can be no doubt recent results and performances have been dreadful and it is clear many fans are unhappy.

Whether you think this is harsh or not, and I happen to think David Moyes has done a very good job at West Ham United, this does feel like a rather loveless, joyless relationship coming towards a close.

I don’t see Moyes being West Ham manager next season. I just think it is a question of when and how he goes – but he should be remembered with respect as a manager who brought a trophy to the club and put them in the upper reaches of the Premier League.

  4. Hodgson health main concern but planning continues at Palacepublished at 10:45 Greenwich Mean Time 19 February

    Alex Howell
    BBC Sport

It's a complicated time at Crystal Palace at the moment. Roy Hodgson was set to be replaced by Oliver Glasner before falling ill at training on Friday.

Hodgson is understood to be doing well in his recovery and the club have been focusing on his health.

He has not been sacked - and assistant manager Paddy McCarthy and first team coach Ray Lewington are expected to lead the Palace team this evening for the match against Everton tonight at Goodison Park.

It's a big game for both sides but Palace have started to look over their shoulder after a poor run of form has seen them get dragged closer to the relegation zone.

Glasner was pictured at Tottenham at the weekend, a team Palace play in two weeks, so it could be that his appointment will be confirmed once the match tonight is out of the way.

Some breaking news from the Championship this morning.

Birmingham City boss Tony Mowbray is stepping away from the Blues hotseat for "six to eight weeks" to receive unspecified medical treatment.

In a statement, Mowbray said: "Following my recent LMA [League Managers' Association] health assessment I have received a medical diagnosis that will require me to receive treatment."

The 60-year-old succeeded Wayne Rooney as boss at St Andrew's at the beginning of January and has guided them to three wins in his opening six games, steering Blues up to 15th in the table.

Assistant manager Mark Venus will take the reins in the meantime, although Mowbray has said he "will continue to provide advice and counsel while undergoing treatment".

As we mentioned at the start of today's live, Newcastle’s sporting director Dan Ashworth has been placed on gardening leave after telling the club he wants to join Manchester United.

Manchester United want Ashworth to join their INEOS-inspired overhaul of the club, although it is not thought talks have opened yet.

However, Newcastle have Ashworth under contract, which prevents the 52-year-old from working for anyone else into 2025 unless compensation is agreed.

Newcastle believe they will be within their rights to ask Manchester United for a fee well in excess of £10m, although the Old Trafford outfit are determined they will not be held to ransom.

Phil: Very simple question. Very simple answer. Yes. A shocking tackle that was lucky not to cause a very serious injury.

  8. Williamson out of Lionesses squadpublished at 10:14 Greenwich Mean Time 19 February

Leah Williamson has withdrawn from her first England squad since April after injuring her hamstring.

The defender missed Arsenal's Women's Super League win against Manchester United over the weekend with the problem.

The 26-year-old was named in the squad for February's fixtures with Austria and Italy after missing nine months of last year with an anterior cruciate knee ligament (ACL) injury.

Manchester United defender Millie Turner takes Williamson's squad place.

Chrisgill95 on X: Chelsea’s draw at Manchester City may have given Mauricio Pochettino some breathing space but patience isn’t a great virtue at Stamford Bridge. How much is the Carabao Cup final key to his future?

Phil: Morning Chris. I actually think Chelsea have shown signs of real improvement recently, especially when I saw them win at Aston Villa in the FA Cup. I wouldn’t say the Carabao Cup final is key to Mauricio Pochettino’s future but it would be huge for Chelsea and the manager to win it.

It would give him his first trophy in England and ensure European football next season, which would give the club some much-needed calm (not to mention success) after all the recent upheaval.

It really is time for some stability at Chelsea – easier said than done, I know – and to just give Pochettino time and space. I do think there have been some good signs recently.

  11. Holgate 'has to take responsibility' - Wilderpublished at 09:59 Greenwich Mean Time 19 February

    Sheff Utd 0-5 Brighton

Blades boss Chris Wilder says Mason Holgate "has to take responsibility" after the defender's red card in the early stages of Sheffield United's thrashing by Brighton.

Holgate caught Kaoru Mitoma with a horrific challenge just below the knee in the 12th minute and was dismissed when his yellow card was upgraded following a video assistant referee review.

"It was a mistimed tackle and the correct decision was made," Wilder told BBC Match of the Day when asked about Holgate's challenge .

"Mason has to take the responsibility that his decision has hurt us and the gameplan goes out of the window after that."

I once saw Timmy Mallett at Maidenhead vs Whitehawk. Huge star, but I wasn't fazed. He's a Maidenhead fan and I was supporting the mighty Hawks! He was still wearing his silly specs so instantly recognisable.

We're reliably informed Timmy Mallett also supports Oxford United.

Possibly his greatest football crossover story, though, was a dispute with West Ham over plans to sell their 'Herbie the Hammer' mascot which he felt was too similar to his own copyrighted soft toy hammer called 'Pinky Punky'.

  15. 'We can't have a passive game'published at 09:43 Greenwich Mean Time 19 February

    Sheff Utd 0-5 Brighton

    Sheffield United

Chris Wilder revealed Mason Holgate had said sorry to his team-mates for the challenge on Kaoru Mitoma that led to the Blades defender's red card against Brighton.

"He has apologised to the boys, he understands it and he is an experienced pro," said the Blades boss. "He has got it wrong. I want us to be competitive, I want us to win tackles, we can't have a passive game.

"It is a competitive game, it is not a non-contact game but we have to get that right, Mason has to get that right. It is huge setback for us in the approach to the overall game.

"I am torn, I am a competitor and I understand that it was a very, very strong challenge and the game has moved on."

Can’t believe Mason Holgate was looking aggrieved to receive a yellow card, never mind a red for that tackle.

  19. 'A really bad tackle' - pundits on Holgatepublished at 09:22 Greenwich Mean Time 19 February

    Sheff Utd 0-5 Brighton

Anel Ahmedhodzic might not have thought Holgate's challenge was red-card-worthy in real time - but he could well be alone in that view.

"He's obviously won the ball, but he's followed through," Brighton striker Danny Welbeck told Sky Sports. "It was one of those challenges where I did think it was a red card straight away."

On BBC Radio 5 Live former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson described it as "a really bad tackle" and added: "I'm sure when Sheffield United fans get home and watch Match of the Day Two, they'll realise the decision was right."

Holgate is the only player to have received a red card in each of the past three Premier League seasons. The defender joined the Blades in February after being recalled from his loan at Southampton earlier this season.
