Juventus will be back in Europe next season after beating Atalanta 1-0 on Wednesday to lift a record-extending 15th Coppa Italia.

Dusan Vlahovic scored the only goal in Rome's Stadio Olimpico after just four minutes when he received Andrea Cambiaso's pass before finishing from 12 yards out.

The Serbia striker later had a goal disallowed for offside, while Atalanta's Ademola Lookman and Juve's Fabio Miretti hit the woodwork late on.

Under-pressure Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri, who has won a record five Coppas Italia, was sent off towards the end of the game for dissent.

It it Juve's first major trophy in three years while Atalanta's wait to win a first trophy since the 1963 Coppa Italia goes on - but they have another chance to end that drought next week with the Europa League final against Bayer Leverkusen in Dublin.

Chelsea midfielder Cole Palmer says European qualification would be a "step in the right direction" for the club.

Despite a difficult campaign, the Blues will guarantee a spot in Europe next season if they claim a point at home to Bournemouth in Sunday's final game.

"For it to be in our hands to get sixth place is a big thing for us," said Palmer, who scored his 22nd goal of the season with the opener at Brighton.

"Chelsea are a big club and everyone wants to finish higher than sixth but you have to look at where we were at the start of the season."

Mauricio Pochettino's side have recovered from a poor start to the campaign and were in 12th place as recently as 3 April.

"To get back into Europe would be a step in the right direction," added Palmer, 22. "All credit to the manager. All the players love the manager and want to fight for him."

  7. Which places will ensure European qualification?published at 07:39 British Summer Time 16 May

A fifth or sixth-placed Premier League finish would give Chelsea a spot in next season's Europa League, while seventh is only good enough for the Europa Conference League.

However, if rivals Manchester United finish outside the top six they could still take a Europa League place by winning the FA Cup.

If that were to happen, the side finishing fifth would also enter the Europa League, but sixth place would instead land a Conference League spot and a seventh-placed finish would miss out on Europe entirely.

  8. Premier League's race for Europepublished at 07:34 British Summer Time 16 May

Chelsea's win on Wednesday sent them up to sixth place in the Premier League table and they currently sit in a qualification spot for next season's Europa Conference League.

Manchester United's win over Newcastle, meanwhile, means they go into the final day of the season needing to better Newcastle’s result to also claim a place in the Europa Conference League - if Manchester City beat United in the FA Cup final on 25 May.

However, if the Red Devils manage to beat City at Wembley and win the FA Cup, they will qualify for the Europa League.

Cole Palmer's brilliant season with Chelsea continued as his goal helped the Blues boost their European qualification hopes with a win at Brighton in the Premier League.

Palmer netted his 22nd league strike of the season, meeting Marc Cucurella's cross with a looping header into the far corner in the 34th minute.

And the visitors added a second 14 minutes after the restart when Christopher Nkunku coolly dispatched Malo Gusto's cutback.

Having been so dominant Chelsea gifted Brighton a way back into the game when substitute Reece James - playing just his second match in 2024 after coming back from a long-term injury - was shown a straight red card for kicking out at Joao Pedro.

In stoppage time Danny Welbeck netted to halve the deficit, tapping in a Pedro cross, but the visitors held on.

Rasmus Hojlund broke his 10-game scoring drought to seal victory for Manchester United in a thrilling Old Trafford encounter with Newcastle.

Anything other than a win for Erik ten Hag’s side would have condemned them to their lowest league finish in 34 years.

Instead, they go into the final day needing to better Newcastle’s result to claim a place in next season’s Europa Conference League, although they will qualify for the Europa League if they beat Manchester City in the FA Cup final at Wembley on 25 May.

Kobbie Mainoo put the home side in front after 31 minutes when he applied a cool finish from 10 yards after being played onside by Kieran Trippier.

Anthony Gordon levelled four minutes after the restart and Manchester United needed a brilliant tackle from Sofyan Amrabat to stop them from going behind as Alexander Isak failed to finish a three-on-one counter.

Amad Diallo drove home his first Premier League goal just before the hour mark as Newcastle failed to clear a corner to put Manchester United back in front, although Eddie Howe’s visitors were inches away from an equaliser as Miguel Almiron just failed to turn home a low cross from the excellent Gordon at the far post.

It was left to Hojlund to settle home nerves, stepping to his right before sending a low finish into the bottom corner for his 15th goal of the season.

However those nerves still jangled a bit, as Newcastle left-back Lewis Hall fired home from the edge of the box in the second minute of stoppage time but the home side held on.

Chelsea overcame Tottenham to move top of the Women’s Super League on goal difference going into the final day of the season.

The title race will be decided on Saturday when Emma Hayes' side visit Manchester United and second-placed Manchester City are away to Aston Villa (both 15:00 BST).

Maika Hamano prodded home an expertly-whipped Guro Reiten delivery in the 37th minute for the game's only goal and put Chelsea on course to make the most of their game in hand on City.

Celtic emphatically sealed a 12th Scottish Premiership title in 13 seasons by dismantling Kilmarnock in arguably their finest display of the season.

Brendan Rodgers' side travelled to Rugby Park, where they had lost on their previous two visits, knowing a point in their penultimate league fixture would extend their top-flight dominance.

In a performance packed with the urgency and intensity Rodgers craves, two goals inside the opening 12 minutes eliminated any fears of a third straight defeat in Ayrshire.

The outstanding Matt O'Riley - Celtic's player of the season - had a killer back-post ball buried by Adam Idah before Alistair Johnston's driven cross was tapped in by Daizen Maeda.

By the 35th minute, it was three for the rampant visitors as Maeda turned provider for the resurgent James Forrest to convert from close range.

O'Riley rocketed in a stunning fourth from the edge of the box after break before coolly slotting away Celtic's fifth and his 18th goal of the season.
