Carlton Morris has scored a goal in all three of Derby's Championship matches so far this season

Carlton Morris scored an 86th-minute equaliser as Derby salvaged their first point of the Championship season with a 1-1 draw against Bristol City.

Scott Twine had given the Robins the lead in the first half, shooting low and into the bottom corner for his third goal of the campaign.

Sinclair Armstrong and Anis Mehmeti both missed chances to settle the game for Bristol City, who had twice as many shots as Derby and looked to be going top of the table before the rest of the weekend's fixtures.

But Morris found the net with four minutes left, tapping in a rebound after Joe Ward's header was saved, to put a first point on the board for the Rams in 2025-26 after successive defeats.

Derby won 3-0 when this fixture played out last season and they started positively with almost all of the first 20 minutes played in Bristol City's half.

Callum Elder saw a strike deflected wide inside two minutes, former Robins forward Andi Weimann had a goal-bound shot blocked and Morris then drilled an effort from a tight angle which was cleared at the near post, as Bristol City seemed content to soak up the pressure.

Gradually the scales began tilting as the visitors started dominating possession and controlling territory. Captain and former Derby man Jason Knight scuffed a shot from the edge of the box after 25 minutes for their first attempt at goal, but it was Twine who found the net 10 minutes later.

After scoring twice in the opening day 4-1 thrashing of Sheffield United, Twine was picked out in space in the box by Mark Sykes and had time to take two touches and calmly side-foot home.

Moments later City should have made it 2-0 as they won the ball on halfway and in a three-on-two Emil Riis picked out Mehmeti, but he took one too many touches and eventually shot wide.

Derby came out with renewed energy after the break and the intensity picked up when Rhian Brewster was brought on for his debut along with Ward and Bobby Clark in a triple change on the hour mark.

Yet Bristol City remained the only side able to create anything, with Jacob Widell Zetterstrom saving a fairly tame curler from Armstrong, while Mehmeti intercepted a loose ball that he was unable to bury into the corner.

Morris then made them pay, equalising late on with his third goal in as many matches since making a summer move from Luton.

Ward's header, from Elder's cross into the box, forced an excellent one-handed save out of Radek Vitek, but Morris pounced first to put the loose ball into the net.

Twine almost snatched back the three points for City in the dying minutes but Zetterstrom dived to keep out his free-kick that was heading for the top corner.

Derby got 'reward' in the end - Eustace

Derby head coach John Eustace told BBC Radio Derby:

"Very proud of the effort of the group, to keep going the way we did - big pressure at home when you've lost two in a row. The way the lads carried on and went about their business was really pleasing.

"First half an hour I thought we played really well and really took the game to a really good Bristol City team. The goal then really knocks the stuffing out of us on the back of two defeats.

"At home when you go 1-0 down it can get a bit nervy, but the way the lads got together at half-time, and a few little tweaks, we finished the second half much better, we were a much better team.

"There were some difficult times in that second half to keep going and do what we wanted to do, but in the end we got our reward."

Bristol City head coach Gerhard Struber told BBC Radio Bristol:

"We invested a lot, so many things went exactly in the direction of our plan.

"We are in the lead and in the second half lose a bit of possession power. We did a great job in so many directions, they have one thing and we have a bit of a sleepy moment with the cross on the right. Radek was ready [but] second ball he was not there.

"Over the game so many moments it was great and in this moment it was a little bit too late. In the end this is frustrating when you play away and you control the whole game in a clear direction and you drive home in the end with one point. We are not happy."

On Riis going off injured: "It's not so bad, it's a bruise. I hope he's back soon."
