    The Daily Telegraph

Manchester United have been pretty ruthless in their recruitment drive off the field since British billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe bought a stake in the club.

Southampton director of football Jason Wilcox is the latest candidate on their radar, according to the Telegraph.

And Southampton are said to be furious about the manner of the approach being made by the Red Devils.

SMO: They [Ipswich] need to strengthen in defence to achieve automatic promotion. Their offensive players are getting them out of jail many a time but at the tail end of the season, where goal difference may come to play, stopping opponents from scoring should be key now.

Willie: Southampton under Martin are the pillow fisted boxer; lovely to watch, lots of feints & jabs but susceptible to a knockout. This is all on Martin; they were much the better Team for the first hour but lack killer instinct. We hung in there, made the attacking changes & went for it as always.

    The Daily Express

The Express go with David Moyes' defence of Kalvin Phillips, who is on loan at West Ham from Manchester City.

Phillips made the move in January to get his career back on track but has struggled to have an impact.

He was allegedly caught making an offensive gesture to fans while getting on the team bus after Saturday's loss at Newcastle United.

Of course, last night's Championship action gets a mention, while there's a line on Eddie Howe ruling out any exit for Newcastle striker Alexander Isak this summer.

So Ipswich have now gained 31 points from losing positions, without them they’d be challenging Sunderland in mid table, resilient or what?

Prior to Jeremy Sarmiento's 97th-minute strike, Ipswich were sitting third in the Championship but Ecuadorian's winner means they are top of the table.

There's also a line on Jason Wilcox with Manchester United said to have made a "formal approach" to Southampton for their director of football.

It's proving exciting at both ends of the table in the Championship with just six points between 10th-placed Hull and Norwich in 6th - the final play-off spot.

And at the other end, just six points separate 22nd-placed Huddersfield and QPR in 16th.

Owais Subhan Ali: Argyle is in a precarious position in the Championship, just one place and one point off the relegation zone. This likely adds intensity to their upcoming matches as they strive to avoid relegation.

Paddy: Surprised by that. Started off well and made some good signings. Team been playing well just not getting the results.

The Championship's top goalscorer Sammie Szmodics bagged a first-half double at Sunderland to lead Blackburn to their first win under boss John Eustace.

Rovers made a big stride away from the relegation morass, with Ryan Hedges, Tyrhys Dolan and Andrew Moran adding three more in the second half. Chris Rigg scored a consolation for the dismal Black Cats.

Blackburn had gone 10 games without a victory since Eustace took over from Jon Dahl Tomasson, and had only managed four goals in their previous six games, but they found a disinterested Sunderland, who have won just one of their past nine, easy pickings at the Stadium of Light.

With the possibility of a play-off place a distant memory and safety virtually certain, the home side could not build on their Good Friday success at Cardiff, their first win under interim manager Mike Dodds.

Blackburn had not won an away match since November 25, a run of 10 games that had contributed to their slide towards the drop zone, but they broke that run in fine style and could easily have scored more.

People saying Leicester gave away their points lead are ridiculous. This Leeds team has to be the strongest the championship has ever seen. It's a 46 game season, teams are going to go through dips and good runs. I think Leicester and Leeds automatic. But it will be close.

Love to see Ipswich get an automatic promotion. After all they didn't have the bonus of the parachute payments that the other teams had, who are in the race for promotion.

  12. Boro boost play-off hopespublished at 07:34 British Summer Time 2 April

Middlesbrough kept alive their hopes of a play-off place with a dominant display against lowly Sheffield Wednesday.

Michael Ihiekwe put through his own net to hand Boro the advantage and in a one-way second half Isaiah Jones' driven shot-cum-cross deflected past goalkeeper James Beadle to make sure of the points.

Sam Greenwood missed a penalty but it made no difference, and with Norwich losing in the early kick-off, the three points kept Michael Carrick's side in sight of the top six after a six-match unbeaten run.

Wednesday's recent good run under manager Danny Rohl has evaporated as defeat meant they have now picked up just one point from their past four games.

Wednesday had shown signs of a revival under Rohl since he replaced Xisco Munoz in October, with four straight wins giving them a fighting chance of staying up. But they faded badly after a decent start at the Riverside Stadium as they sought to build on the home draw with Swansea on Friday.

Plymouth Argyle have sacked head coach Ian Foster after just three months in the job.

The former England Under-20s boss has been in charge of the Championship club since early January after Steven Schumacher left for Stoke City.

After an initial good start, Argyle's form fell away drastically over the past two months as they won just one of 11 Championship games.

The slump has left Argyle one place and one point off the relegation places.

Director of Football Neil Dewsnip and first-team coach Kevin Nancekivell will take charge of the team for the remainder of the season.

  15. Leeds leave it late to see off Hullpublished at 07:18 British Summer Time 2 April

    Leeds 3-1 Hull

Late goals from Crysencio Summerville and Dan James - with a 40-yard finish - ensured Leeds United stayed in the Championship's automatic promotion places after beating Hull City at Elland Road.

Sam Byram headed Leeds ahead after Summerville's shot had been saved, but Hull drew level thanks to an excellent Fabio Carvalho finish.

Leeds missed some great chances before the break, while Hull posed a threat in the early part of the second half.

Mateo Joseph hit the Hull post with 12 minutes to go, but Leeds rallied and Summerville scored from the spot after he was fouled by Regan Slater - and following a disagreement with Joel Piroe about who should take the spot-kick.

James sealed victory in added time with a remarkable shot from just inside the Hull half after visiting keeper Ryan Allsop had gone upfield for a corner and his net was left unguarded.

It was an uplifting moment for the Wales forward after the disappointment of missing the match-deciding penalty in the shootout loss to Poland that meant his country failed to qualify for this summer's Euros.

The win kept Leeds in second place after leaders Ipswich Town's late win over Southampton and Leicester City's victory over Norwich earlier on Easter Monday.

Daniel Farke's side are a point behind Ipswich and one ahead of Leicester, who have a game in hand.

Hull remain in ninth and six points off the play-off spots as their winless run extended to six matches.

Jeremy Sarmiento's goal in the final seconds gave Ipswich Town a dramatic victory over 10-man Southampton and put them top of the Championship.

Leif Davis' powerful strike was cancelled out a minute later by Che Adams' equaliser for the visitors.

Adam Armstrong slotted home to give the Saints the lead but Nathan Broadhead levelled in the 68th minute with an instinctive turn and finish.

James Bree was sent off after bringing Davis down with five minutes left, before Sarmiento netted at the death.

The result leaves Ipswich two points in front of Leicester City, having played one game more.

It was also a big blow to Southampton's slim hopes of automatic promotion.

It's rare that the Championship ever disappoints but this season has been particularly exciting and, on the evidence of Monday's action, it's going to continue delivering right to the finish line.

Ipswich scored in the final seconds to beat Southampton and stay top, while Leeds were drawing 1-1 with Hull in the 88th-minute, before grabbing two goals to ensure they stay second.

Earlier in the day, Leicester had to come from a goal down to beat Norwich 3-1 with the Foxes sitting third and just two points off top spot.
