Oxford United only had three shots against Burnley

Burnley were held to a frustrating goalless draw by Oxford United in the Championship at the Kassam Stadium.

The Clarets dominated possession but failed to carve out any clear-cut chances against a resolute Oxford defence.

Luca Koleosho came the closest for Scott Parker’s side when his powerful left-footed drive from the edge of the box was excellently tipped over the bar by Jamie Cumming after 50 minutes.

Andreas Hountondji also missed a presentable opportunity from close range for Burnley, while Oxford only managed three shots all game but were able to grind out a valuable point.

The visitors played the majority of the match in Oxford’s half, although they took until the 22nd minute to show any real threat.

Koleosho, who was Burnley’s brightest spark, made a burst down the right-hand side and pulled it back to Lyle Foster who fired wide of the near post from 15 yards.

With seven minutes remaining before the interval, the ball broke to the unmarked Hountondji but he was unable to steer his effort on target.

Oxford’s first attempt, and their only effort on target, came in the 48th minute when a corner was whipped in and met at back post by Elliot Moore but his tame header was straight at the keeper.

Des Buckingham's side created a couple of breakaways thereafter but never really looked like scoring.

Burnley missed the opportunity to go top after league leaders West Brom lost away at Sheffield Wednesday earlier in the day.

They slip to fourth, while Oxford are 11th but will certainly be the happier of the two sides.

Oxford head coach Des Buckingham told BBC Radio Oxford:

"We're going to come up against several what were Premier League sides less than six months ago.

"It's a big jump but what we've shown already in these seven games we've had now is that if we stick true to what we try and do, we will put ourselves in the best position to try and get firstly a performance and secondly a result.

"We knew today was going to be a very tough test at home but I've just said to them in there, they can be extremely proud of how they've just worked to make sure we secure at least a point from this game.

"We will need that other side to our game that will allow us to get more results as the season progresses."

Burnley head coach Scott Parker told BBC Radio Lancashire:

"We're a bit disappointed, a bit frustrated in the end.

"They're a good side that are unbeaten at home, three wins at home. A real dogged performance from them, a stubborn team that we needed to break down and they are well organised.

"Today was always going to depend on our chances and when they did come, we didn't manage to score and that's the frustrating part.

"But while we're frustrated we didn't take the three points, we come out of here with a point and we move on."
