A new entrance into Anfield will need to be built. There are the Shankly gates and the Paisley gates, surely we should now have the Klopp gates also!

In the run-up to the eagerly-awaited Black Country derby, family divides are beginning to appear as avid fans prepare to back their teams.

West Bromwich Albion from the Championship are preparing to go head-to-head with the Premier League's Wolverhampton Wanderers in an FA Cup tie on Sunday.

For a mother and son who support opposing teams, a friendly family feud could be brewing.

Suzanne Waterhouse is a lifelong Wolves supporter while her son Ross Melrose is a Baggies fan.

The mum-of-two joked on BBC Radio WM: "It broke my heart but we have to let our children make their own choices, even if they are bad ones!"

She added: "I tried to encourage Ross to support Wolves, he was with Wolves when he was a child, they picked him up from one of those soccer schools so he was there in spirit for a few years but he's made his choice."

  6. How retired captain Davis kept NI fans happypublished at 16:54 Greenwich Mean Time 26 January

Steven Davis celebrates scoring for Northern Ireland.Image source, Press Eye

"You are my Davis, my Steven Davis, you make me happy when skies are grey."

Northern Ireland supporters' own Steven Davis-inspired version of the classic song has reverberated around Windsor Park for many, many years. And, boy, has he made them happy.

It's strange, though, how the closing line in the Green and White Army's song about their inspirational captain has taken on a poignant twist.

"Please don't take my Davis away". Now, sadly for those supporters, their Davis, 39, is away. And the end could not have been more cruel, or less fitting, with a serious knee injury picked up in training in December 2022 forcing the Rangers midfielder to eventually announce his retirement on Thursday.

We have taken a look back on the international career of one of Northern Ireland's greatest-ever players. Have a read here.

  7. Pep - City would sell to Unitedpublished at 16:53 Greenwich Mean Time 26 January

Tottenham v Man City (20:00 GMT)

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

In the wake of Omar Berrada switching roles from director of football operations at the City Football Group to chief executive at Manchester United, Pep Guardiola was asked whether he would sell a player to the Old Trafford.

Last summer, Raheem Sterling went to Chelsea and Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko went to Arsenal.

And Guardiola has no concern about dealing with United as well.

    "Why not?" he said.

"If a person is unhappy here, wanted to go to United and there’s a deal for the right price then no problem.

"If Omar is not happy here and wants to go there he has to go. There is nothing wrong with that.

"If we want a player from them, United agree to sell, and he wants to come why should we not do it?"

  8. 'There's no way he's going to a top-six rival'published at 16:51 Greenwich Mean Time 26 January

    BBC Sounds

The Telegraph's Luke Edwards spoke to the Transfer Gossip Daily podcast about Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson potentially being sold for £18m, with Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United all alerted to his availability: "How could you let him go now when there's five months of the season left?

"Newcastle are still pushing for a European place, they're still in the FA Cup. You cannot write off the season from Eddie Howe's perspective. So there's no way he's going to let Callum Wilson go to a top-six rival.

"I suspect Newcastle will sign another centre-forward in the summer as part of succession planning. He [Wilson] will be worried that he will suddenly be behind Alexander Isak and this new signing. He might drop down to third-choice centre-forward. Callum Wilson doesn't want to be third-choice centre-forward anywhere."

Can I just say that Klopp's eloquence, passion, and conviction in his decision made for one of the best sports news conferences I can remember seeing. I certainly cannot remember a better news conference by any Premier League manager.

I always said that Jurgen Klopp was Shankly 2.0. It took Shanks nearly a decade to build his second great team. Klopp has done so in eighteen months. The line through Shankly, Paisley and Dalglish continues through to him. A statute and gate in his name are both a must. But I’d like to see all four legendary managers carved into a Mount (Ian) Rushmore style monument! YNWA Jurgen.

For how much has been spent, how much hype they've consistently had, and how many expectations have been put on everyone involved; Klopp had definitely underachieved, right?

"The day tickets went on sale, I was coming into the office and the queue was halfway down the drive - I thought 'wow, here we go'."

Deborah Henderson and colleagues at Newport County's ticket office have never seen a week quite like it before their club's clash with Manchester United in the FA Cup.

Last weekend it was a sell-out crowd for their game against Welsh rivals Wrexham in the fourth tier.

This Sunday another packed Rodney Parade will host one of the world's biggest teams.

Such has been the demand for tickets, one Newport player even joined the queue hoping to land spares for friends and family - only to see 14,000 people ahead of him.

Despite their relatively lowly status, County are no strangers to hosting Premier League giants in English football's top cup competition.

In the past six years they have welcomed the likes of Tottenham, Manchester City and Brighton - with County even beating Leicester in 2019. But even that hadn't prepared Deborah and her colleagues for the latest name out of the hat.

"When I was told it was Manchester United I didn't believe it, I thought somebody was winding me up," she says.

"It's been an exceptionally busy week, but it's been good and the atmosphere has been electric."

They'll be watching from 4,000 miles away, but that won't dull the passion of fans in the US who will be up early for the FA Cup Black Country derby.

Wolves and West Brom have sizeable followings across the Atlantic who are all primed for Sunday's clash.

Houston-based Wolves fan Paul Lappage said it was key to put their rivals "in their place" after the 12-year hiatus.

West Brom fan Jordan Bayuk, of Massachusetts, said their league positions would not count for much.

He is a 29-year-old restaurant digital marketer from Foxborough who grew up watching the New England Patriots and the Boston Red Sox dominate American sport.

But he said he never felt an affinity with the big clubs of English football.

"To me European sports isn't just about titles, it's about community," he said.

"You can look at what Rob [McElhenney] and that US group are doing to Wrexham and to me that's kind of what it's all about."

  18. Have Brighton unearthed another gem?published at 16:35 Greenwich Mean Time 26 January

    Brighton & Hove Albion

    Nicola Pearson, BBC Sport

Brighton sign a talented young prospect from South America.

It's not the first time that has been said.

With the announcement on Saturday that Valentin Barco had completed a $10m (£7.87m) move to join the Seagulls on a four-and-a-half-year deal, it appeared Brighton could be repeating the same trick that has proved successful for them in recent seasons.

In January 2019, Albion signed Alexis Mac Allister from Argentinos Juniors for an undisclosed, but reportedly small fee. The midfielder went on to be a key figure in the recent rise of the south coast side and found himself success on the international stage winning the 2022 World Cup with Argentina.

That led to a number of high-profile clubs coming knocking on Brighton's door and ultimately led to the 25-year-old - who scored 20 goals in 112 appearances - heading to Liverpool for a fee that could rise to £55m.

In February 2021, the Seagulls went into the market again. Cherry-picking a young player with potential and signing the then 19-year-old Moises Caicedo from Ecuadorian side Independiente del Valle for £4m.

In a perhaps an even more remarkable rise, the midfielder, who had been commanding the centre of the pitch for Brighton last season, found himself being sold to Chelsea for a £100m fee that could yet rise to a British club record of £115m.

With Ecuador's Pervis Estupinan and Brazil's Joao Pedro also drawing attention from admirers, will history repeat itself with Barco?

The 19-year-old made 35 appearances for his boyhood club Boca Juniors and really began to build his credentials in helping the side reach last season's Copa Libertadores final.

When he made his debut as a 16-year-old in 2021, the versatile youngster became the fourth youngest player in the club's history.

Playing anywhere on the left side, while also having the ability to play more central, Barco is not afraid to show his maturity and step up for his side. As well as providing key assists, he converted decisive penalties in shootout wins over Nacional in the Libertadores and Talleres de Cordoba in the Copa Argentina.

It has yet to be seen whether the teenager will be loaned out to help his development or come straight into the Albion squad, but for Brighton fans it is another exciting prospect unearthed nonetheless.

  19. 'One of the best coaches in the world'published at 16:34 Greenwich Mean Time 26 January

Sheff Utd v Brighton (Sat, 15:00 GMT)

    Brighton & Hove Albion

We heard from Brighton manager Roberto de Zerbi earlier, he was speaking ahead of Saturday's trip to Sheffield United in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

The Italian, linked already with the Liverpool post, had some high words of praise for Jurgen Klopp: "I'm very sad because, if he changes league, changes country, the Premier League loses one of the best coaches in the world.

"I consider Klopp, (Pep) Guardiola, (Carlo) Ancelotti, (Marcelo) Bielsa the best coaches in the world and I'm sad for it.

"I can understand it very well. I think our work is the best work you can do but it is very tough.

"You need energy. You have to push every day. If you don't work with the right energy, you lose everything."
