"I always knew I would take that decision because I don't just want to be hanging around. I have thought it through properly.

"I want to win everything this season and if we don't win anything it won't change my mind. It's independent of results. The big one is the development of the team. We have a good basis to work with and that's really important, that's why it's a good moment to give it to someone else."

  4. 'It's a process we will go through'published at 15:35 Greenwich Mean Time 26 January

    Liverpool

Liverpool CEO Billy Hogan on the decision-making process: "I think from our perspective, I don't want to set an expectation because it's a process we will go through.

"The way we operate as a football club is to look at all the information, the data and with due diligence and then make our decision. I can't put a time on it. It will happen behind the scenes. It's not to be a distraction... it's about the campaign continuing and the team continuing to perform.

When we have something to say, we will have something to say at that point."

  5. 'My energy level was endless but now it's not'published at 15:34 Greenwich Mean Time 26 January

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp on whether he was as energised as he said at the start of the season: "The reason for that was, the summer was a difficult summer, we didn't have a lot of time to put the legs on the table, we were working hard to bring players in.

"It's not about that, in this moment of each minute, it's just the stuff what you have to do next, it's a lot like planning, you might think the transfer window is where things don't happen, so the work around planning, pre-season they need to be spot on because it's important.

"I've done it so often, I have no problem with you I can't wait to not do it any more, you have to be the best version of yourself especially for a club like Liverpool.

"I can't do it on three wheels, I don't want to be a passenger. My manager skills is based on energy and relationships.

"I am who I am and where I am because of how I am. I cannot be that anymore. I didn't say it after one two three year four five, I didn't say it.

"I was 100% convinced at that moment we will go to 2026. My energy level was endless but now it's not. Now we have to change."

  6. 'Best memories are yet to come'published at 15:31 Greenwich Mean Time 26 January

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp on if he has any regrets: "I'm not in the mood to think about that [regrets].

"I don't have to remember anything now. The best memories are yet to come.

"That's not what today is about. I have no regrets but a lot of special memories.

"We are here today just to answer your questions.

"By this time it would be so easy in this job to blame the owners if I said 'FSG could have spent more' but that's not it.

"We built two stands tht will stay forever. We built this AXA training ground that will stay for the next 30, 40 or 50 years. We did it all the Liverpool way, which I love.

"That we didn't win the league with 97 points or the Champions League is fine. You could say we should have spent more money on a player, I understand that's a fan view but that can never be a professional view.

"If you want to blame someone for not winning the Champions League three times then you can blame me, no body else. Everyone else brought us to that point."

  7. 'Surprised but I understand'published at 15:25 Greenwich Mean Time 26 January

    Liverpool

Liverpool CEO Billy Hogan on the news Jurgen Klopp is leaving and the process of finding a successor: "It's hard to put into words how significant it is. When Jurgen joined in 2015 he spoke about leaving the club in a better place to how he found it

"If you look at where we are today there is no doubt he's done that.

"The news is sad and I'm sure supporters share that emotion. We've had talks over the last few months and the first time we spoke a out it from professional and personal stand point, I can see from my perspective that it's a decision he's comfortable with. When you friend and colleague comes to a decision like that you respect it.

"I'm surprised in a sense but I understand it. It's a sad day but a credit to Jurgen he's come to a decision that allows the club to go through an orderly process. That's not easy to do if this news isn't public.

"We'll go through the same process that brought us Jurgen almost nine years ago.

"We will do the process in private with, as Jurgen said, the ownership and when we have further news we can discuss it but it won't be a running commentary. At this club we prefer to operate on only speaking when we know. We won't get into the name game.

"This is an announcement we and Jurgen are making and after taking we're focusing on the campaign and competing on four fronts to make the 2023-24 campaign one supporters can look back on with enjoyment."

  8. 'It's one of the reasons I can leave'published at 15:21 Greenwich Mean Time 26 January

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp on whether he will have a choice in his successor: "No why should I? In this world we have a few faces, managers of the club and others you don't see often.

"It looks like I do all the work, I don't... I can't. What we built over the last eight and a half years is a strong structure behind the scenes. It's one of the reasons I can leave. We did that to perfection, no but as good as we could.

"For now I wish I can help them achieve the best possible."

  9. 'No guarantees we will win anything'published at 15:17 Greenwich Mean Time 26 January

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp on speaking with the players: "The players had a lot of questions. I spoke to them together and a few after that.

"We have a really strong bond with the players so they didn't ask questions yet because we are professionals.

"The agreement you have with the team on both sides is we agree for a year, after that anything can happen with a manager.

"We are completely in that year and the boys are. They see it like that too.

"You can see the boys are in a really good mood. They weren't having a party when I told them but it was just an announcement.

"I always have to review is it still right? Many managers would have got the sack last season but there was never any intention to do that.

"I knew I would have to say when it's not right any more.

"People from the outside who are not with us might be happy. The distractions come from the outside. We will not let distractions happen. If we want we can grow even more together to squeeze everything out of the season.

"There are no guarantees that we will win anything but the fact I said I won't be manager next season doesn't mean we will fight less.

"We will be completely in it and fight. I will be here 100%. I just know I can't do the job in the future but I will do it very well right now."

  10. 'I am fully here'published at 15:14 Greenwich Mean Time 26 January

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp on his emotions: "The relief was that I made a decision for myself, I didn't know that would be the case but it was like that. today it's mixed. But I am not as emotional as I will be when it comes to an end because I spoke to the players.

"Two important things to do was to tell the owners, tell the supporters and the players. the reaction of the players was top.

"I am here and I am fully here. Until the end of the season, we have so much to do, I am fully in that.

"It's just the right thing to do and I'm convinced in the right moment because the club needs time to sort the future."

  11. 'My resources are not endless'published at 15:08 Greenwich Mean Time 26 January

    Liverpool

Right, to the Klopp news conference... On why it's the right time to go at the end of the season: "With all the responsibility you have in this job, you have to be top of your game.

"I am, but I've been doing this 24 years now. When you had or have the career I had it's almost impossible to start where I did and arrive at Liverpool.

"I always invested everything I had. I realised my resources are not endless and I prefer to pack everything into this season and then have a break or stop or whatever. We're not young rabbits any more and we don't jump as high as we did.

"This team we have with all the super things we have in this club, they need a manager at the top of his game and top level. I can't be there any more. The alternative is I go into next season and I have to try and get through it, that's not right.

"I told the club and the staff and since today everyone knows.

"I still think it's the right thing to do. I don't take these things lightly. I'm convinced it's right."

    Xabi Alonso

The early favourite with the bookmakers and a manager who has previously been talked about as a potential Klopp successor one day.

The former Liverpool midfielder has worked wonders at Bayer Leverkusen this campaign, taking them to the top of the Bundesliga - four points clear of Bayern Munich - after guiding them to last year's Europa League semi-finals in his first half season in charge.

The 42-year-old, who is under contract until 2026, has the German side playing expansive, attacking football and would be a popular choice among Liverpool fans.

    Roberto de Zerbi

Of those currently managing in the Premier League, Brighton boss Roberto de Zerbi would seem to be the most likely candidate to replace Klopp.

The 44-year-old Italian has impressed the Liverpool boss with his tactical versatility having secured victories over the Reds in the league and FA Cup last season, as well as a 3-3 draw at Anfield in his first game in charge of the Seagulls.

De Zerbi guided Brighton to seventh place last year, which saw the club qualify for European competition for the first time.

    Luis Enrique

Now manager of Paris St-Germain, the 53-year-old was previously boss of Spain.

He left that role after being knocked out of the World Cup by Morocco in the last 16 in December 2022, having previously guided his country to the Euro 2020 semi-finals.

Enrique's most successful period as manager at club level came with Barcelona. Between 2014 and 2017 he won the Champions League and guided them to two La Liga titles, three Copas del Rey, the Super Cup, the Club World Cup and Spanish Super Cup.

Joanne Roche from North Wales said Jurgen Klopp was the "driving force" of the club.

"I'm in shock, it's terrible," she said.

"You can understand maybe he's just exhausted and hopefully we can win everything this year in his final year but I just don't know who would come next.

"I think it's terrible that he's going but if that's right for him he's got to do that hasn't he?

"He's what drives everything. Over the last few years he's made Liverpool so popular again to everybody.

"It's going to be really sad. I think it's going to be someone very different to him, his style of management and the support he shows the team."

I can see Postecoglou getting the Liverpool job in the summer. He has made small regressive steps from club to club. He has done very well at Tottenham but Liverpool would be a huge step up. He clearly has a lot of talent and could do well.
