  8. Similarities with Shanklypublished at 14:18 Greenwich Mean Time 26 January

Jürgen Klopp has been compared to iconic Reds boss Bill Shankly many times.

Even his departure has been dropped upon Liverpool fans, much like confirmation of Shankly leaving the club in 1974 was.

Shankly's statue is outside the Kop end with the words "he made the people happy" underneath.

Klopp has certainly made Liverpool fans happy in his time here. It wouldn't be a surprise if he has a statue here one day.

Jurgen's leaving on a high with a fantastic, talented and young squad. Excellent succession planning, unlike Sir Alex who left management of Man Utd when it was about to become difficult for the club. Respect, Jurgen!

    Martin, Birmingham

You will be missed Jürgen, and not just by Liverpool fans - thanks for helping to light up the PL. That smile and those teeth! up there with Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas!

    Don Clark

Every Liverpool fan will thank Jurgen Klopp... but we must also give our biggest thanks to his wife and family. His time and dedication to Liverpool has taken away his time available to them, his family. Thank you Ulla, Marc and Dennis.

Jonny Vegas: Jürgen Klopp, what a Legend. Never got fired and success at every club he coached. Doubt Alonso is available for LFC, he just signed until 2026 last October and only seems to have a clause for Real Madrid. Klopp swapping jobs with Nagelsmann this summer?

Kindergarten Klopp: Well this is a gut punch. Why are the back room staff leaving too? I thought Ljinders was being groomed as a successor, and some continuity behind the scenes would seem beneficial.

A host of prominent Liverpool fans, podcasters and journalists have had their say on Jurgen Klopp's decision to leave Anfield this summer.

Fan-favourite singer Jamie Webster: Don’t even know where to begin with this one. For once I’m lost for words. All I’ll say is that Jurgen Klopp is a better human being than he is a football manager - and that’s saying something in itself, because I think he’s the best football manager in the world.

Podcaster Gareth Roberts: Absolutely gutted. Thought we were out of the woods in terms of Klopp potentially leaving given how good this season has been so far. Last season, could see it. Now? Shocked. What a job he has done. Feels impossible to follow. Hard to take in. I don't think you can emerge the other side of watching that video with Klopp with any resentment. Feels like he is prioritising himself, his health, his life, his family. Can't begin to imagine the intensity of doing that job. You only have to consider how it has clearly affected previous managers. Sure, he'll paint the face on for press conferences, interviews and the rest, but only he knows how he is really feeling when he goes home at night.

Dominic King, Daily Mail: The biggest day at Anfield since February 22, 1991 when Kenny Dalglish called time. They will build a statue for Jurgen Klopp one day. That is all you need to know about all he has overseen these last nine years. He called himself The Normal One. None of this has been normal.

Rob Gutmann, The Anfield Wrap: Worse than the day Kenny left. Devastated.

Former Liverpool Youth player Paul Dalglish: Devastated about the Klopp news. What a man. What a manager. He brought me memories that I didn't think were achievable. An all time great Liverpool legend. Only one man to take over for me. Xabi Alonso.

People are saying the Liverpool players and staff will now be extra motivated to win trophies this season on the news of Klopp's departure. I think this desperation to succeed will add so much additional pressure that it could actually have the opposite effect, with the extra weight of expectation causing havoc with nerves for players and fans alike. That might be wishful thinking - I am a Manchester City fan - but I can envisage it as a distinct possibility.

    Ken

For the rest of the day, I shall mostly be listening to 'I'm so glad (that Jurgen is a red)' and dreaming of a league title win with 3 other trophies in tow. Come on Liverpool! Let's send Klopp off in a tribute and style he so very much deserves! YNWA.

  14. A legacy left on walls and in heartspublished at 14:04 Greenwich Mean Time 26 January

    Luke Reddy, BBC Sport

You do not have to go far in Liverpool to spot Jurgen Klopp's influence.

You can drink in a pub bearing his name, you can sleep in a guest house named after him, in several areas you can see bare bricks covered in paint, brought to life by his image.

And Klopp has brought life to the city, for those of a red persuasion at least.

He has served up an energy, poured it into the Anfield crowd and carried with him a sea of believers.

The man is full throttle, his teams play in his image and the stands at the ever-changing stadium feed off a power source that seemingly starts with him.

He would likely play down such significance but this day will hurt fans. Some will remember the footage of supporters being informed on the streets of Liverpool of Bill Shankly's retirement. They were disbelieving, frozen in an age where access to instant information was not the norm.

Others will recall the exit of Sir Kenny Dalglish, the loss of an adopted son of the city. Each recollection brings its own pain and new era - good and bad.

Some - perhaps Klopp himself - will preach the need for continuity. Fans who have felt the force of his energy will truly question if such a one-off can be followed with any semblance of what has gone before.

In all reality, everything will now change. Klopp turned doubters to believers. Someone will need to carry fans up that mountain once again.

Klopp painted the Reds consistently back into the competitive picture. His legacy will manifest in the trophy room, on city walls and, perhaps most importantly of all, in hearts.

This is The Champions Wall at Anfield, proudly displaying the trophies the club has won.

Klopp added a Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup and Champions League to this board, as well as a Uefa Super Cup and their inaugural Club World Cup.

He'll be hoping to make further additions to the wall before he leaves this summer, starting with that EFL Cup final next month.

If he can lead the side to success in the Europa League, he'll have won every available trophy as manager at Liverpool.

Peter Humfrey: Not a fan of Liverpool and slowly went off Klopp down the years but his record speaks for itself and he definitely goes down as one of the greater managers of the PL era. Not a Mourinho or Wenger but not far off.

Kwong Tse: For Liverpool and Jürgen Klopp there is still a date with destiny. Liverpool played every game possible 2 years ago but lost out in the League and CL. This season there is another chance to win the quadruple. That would be the ultimate send off!

  20. Ineos can have 'big impact' on driving Man Utd standardspublished at 13:53 Greenwich Mean Time 26 January

Newport v Man Utd (Sun, 16:30 GMT)

    Manchester United

More from Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag on the influence that Ineos will have at the club with Sir Jim Ratcliffe's 25% investment.

"It gives spirit in this whole club, everyone notices this club is going into a period of changes and it's because we want to achieve high targets, standards have to change, we started with this one-and-a-half years ago," says Ten Hag.

"I'm sure Ineos and me are very aligned on this, we understand we have to change, we started that process last season with the dressing room but also many departments.

"I am very happy to raise the standards, to collaborate more and Ineos can have a big impact on that."
