Finally from Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim on Rasmus Hojlund: “He is trying really hard. He made the runs, we know that Real Sociedad has a high line and he used his pace to win and fight.

“He has to continue playing and not being anxious.”

On Joshua Zirkzee: “He deserved it, he is working well and he is improving a lot of things in his game. He deserves this moment and he was important for us today."

On Alejadnro Garnacho: "He was tired and you see it because we did a lot of transitions in the second half. Sometimes he was late to defend [in the second half]. I felt like he was tired to recover and do the same things."

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim, speaking to TNT Sports: "I felt until the penalty we had control of the game and the penalty changed the momentum. Our team in the last minutes were really tired. We take this stage to Old Trafford and it is going to be a different game. The pressure will be on us in that stadium.

"We will be surviving physically to get to Sunday. The momentum changed, but I think it was clearly fatigue."

On attacking tactics: "We look at the opponent and the way they try to press. Which player is going to follow the run? And we try imagine the right characteristics for that game.

"I think until the penalty we had good possession. We know that they jumped strong to our press. Our decision in the last third is not the better decision. We have to move on to the next game."

Should Rangers make it through to the last eight, they'll play either Claudio Ranieri's Roma or Athletic Bilbao in the quarter-finals.

Inaki Williams has put Bilbao ahead early in the second half, nodding in from about five yards in the Italian capital.

Bilbao will host the Europa League final in May.

Looking ahead with Arsenal coming to Old Trafford [on Sunday], that's a massive game. There is plenty of positives to take from this, but if you look back at the moments I think Manchester United could have come away with a win.

Manchester United goalscorer Joshua Zirkzee, speaking to TNT Sports: "I think we were unlucky with the penalty. It shows we have to be relentless with our chances. We had enough of them today. In the end a draw, away, they have to come to Old Trafford."

On deserving more from the game: "I think if you look at the chances and the opportunities we had, I think, yes. Of course, it is not easy. In the end I think we should have had one more."

On his goal: "The team needed it. That's the most important thing. In the end we have to win, and we didn't win today, so we will focus on the next games."

On the penalty: "Obviously, if you see the way the stadium reacts to the penalty it is obvious they needed it. I feel like we can do better and remain calm."

On United being 'anxious': “One thing that I am sure - they’re anxious to score goals and win games. They are doing their best and sometimes when they want to do their best, but they’re not deciding the best way in their position."

The Europa League is the only thing going for Manchester United.

It is so important for them as that's the way back into the Champions League.

If that happens you win a trophy. Does it paint over cracks? Yes.

If that falls away it is a totally disastrous season.

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou on Rodrigo Bentancur being suspended for the second leg: "We were always running the tightrope with him being on the yellow cards. It's disappointing to lose him for the second leg, but we have seven days to address that."

On Dominic Solanke's injury: "I think it was a knock, hopefully it's nothing too bad."

On if the belief is still there: "Absolutely, at home we're capable of scoring goals and putting pressure on the opponent."

More from Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou, speaking to TNT Sports: "It was a tricky pitch and we didn't really handle it really well. Aside from that, we just weren't aggressive enough and we were way too passive in terms of the way we pressed.

"Too many times we were just circulating the ball without any real intent to hurt them. No fault for the goal, it happens. It's more about the collective tonight rather than the individuals.

"Collectively, we were nowhere near the level we needed to be and that's the thing we need to address."

Jay Gorter has only been on the field a couple of minutes but the substitute Ajax goalkeeper is picking the ball out of his net.

Not too much he could do about it - Hugo Larsson's shot from distance was on target, but it took a deflection off Ajax goalscorer Brian Brobbey and nestled into the corner.

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou, speaking to TNT Sports: "Not a great night for us. Obviously, it's a disappointing result but a really disappointing performance.

"We never got a grip on the game, never really got control at any stage. We were always struggling both on and off the ball. It wasn't a great night, but it's only halfway and we're still in the tie."

Ajax have been forced to change their goalkeeper Remko Pasveer because of an injury, seemingly sustained when he tried to clear a ball.

Jay Gorter, formerly of Aberdeen, is on in his place. They remain 1-0 in front against Frankfurt.

Elsewhere, Lazio have taken the lead at Viktoria Plzen - Alessio Romagnoli the scorer.

If Ruben Amorim looks back there have been a few moments in the game [to score more]. I think if United had gone 2-0 ahead they would have seen the game out. That penalty brought Real Sociedad back into the game.

Brian Brobbey has scored the opening goal for Ajax against Eintracht Frankfurt, nodding in a Jordan Henderson cross.

Elsewhere, Bodo/Glimt lead last season's Conference League winners Olympiakos courtesy of an own goal.
