  1. 'Let us not underestimate the job Arsenal have done'published at 11:08 BST

Former Tottenham goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

Arsenal have done really well in the latter part of the second half. It has been a very good away performance and a good start to the Champions League.

Let's not underestimate the job that they've done. They played against the team with the best defensive record in La Liga last season. They were always going to be a hard team to beat at home.

The first half wasn't pretty but Arsenal dug in. The changes that they've made and the signings that they've made in the final third made the difference.

Noni Madueke was excellent for the whole time down the right-hand side. Eberechi Eze never really got in the game and that forced the manager's hand. The substitutes came on and it was perfect timing as the game opened up for them.

A really good start to the season for Arsenal.

Because of Arteta Arsenal will not win the CL or PL. There is something inherent in his way of setting his teams up that will leave Arsenal short. Anfield at the end of August was a case in point.

More from Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta on Gabriel Martinelli's performance on Tuesday evening: "He fully deserves it. I adore Gabi. His attitude, his commitment, his positivity, what he is willing to do for the team.

"We certainly value all of the quality he has and brings to the team - I am so happy he has decided the game for us in the two actions."

The Arsenal players ran to celebrate with Martinelli after his goal, with Riccardo Calafiori pointing at the player's name on the back of his shirt in front of the supporters.

"That's the spirit," added Arteta. "That's why I really enjoy every single day working with them and being part of this team.

"The way they look after each other is genuine. They really want the best for each other and they recognise someone that works every single day in the manner that Gabi does. You can go through struggles or through moments, and recognising that and having that capacity to connect with him, I think it will mean a lot to him."

"I was sure that Gabi was going to react like that. You raise the level to Gabi and he was going to do that.

"They are the moments that hopefully are going to give him the confidence again to go, as he is an outstanding player."

  4. 'Arsenal can make a real impact in Champions League'published at 10:55 BST

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

I would say Arsenal [are a dark horse to win the Champions League] because they reached the semi-finals last season and have added some real quality in the transfer window.

The experience of the last Champions League campaign will serve them well and they now have the strength of squad to finally break through and win one of the major trophies.

Do I think Arsenal will win the Champions League? Not so sure about that, but I think they can make a real impact.

Champions League on a Thursday night? The fixtures calendar has thrown that anomaly at us this week, with Manchester City, Newcastle United and Barcelona among the teams in action.

In the new format of the men's Champions League, one exclusive week per season has been set aside where matches will be played across Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings.

No other games in Uefa competitions - Europa or Conference League - will be scheduled.

There is no waiting around for the Champions League's exclusive week as it has been assigned to matchday one of the league phase.

The Europa League and Conference League also each have one exclusive week.

For the Europa League exclusive week, matches will be played across two days - Wednesday, 24 September and Thursday, 25 September.

In the case of the Conference League, the exclusive week is a one-night situation - with matches taking place on Thursday, 18 December. But it will draw the full focus as no other European competition games are billed for the Tuesday or Wednesday.

  9. What's coming up?published at 10:29 BST

    Craig Nelson
    BBC Sport reporter

We are going to return to Arsenal and Tottenham next to round up the main talking points from their opening matches of the Champions League.

The north London rivals both kicked off with a win and a clean sheet, so it's been a pleasant morning so far, much more pleasant than the weather here in Manchester.

We will be taking this chat to the rain-soaked north west for Manchester City's pre-match news conference after midday, then it's up to Newcastle around 16:00 BST.

Both clubs are playing their opening fixtures on Thursday.

In between, we will have plenty of build-up to Liverpool and Chelsea's Champions League openers tonight.

After Union Saint-Gilloise's historic opening night victory, there are three other sides looking to make their mark in Europe's premier competition for the very first time

    Bodo/Glimt - Slavia Prague (A) 17:45 BST

Having made history last year in becoming the first Norwegian side to reach the Europa League semi-finals, Bodo/Glimt beat Sturm Graz in the Champions League play-off to reach the league phase.

They're the first Norwegian side to play in the competition since Rosenborg in 2007-08.

    Pafos - Olympiakos (A) 17:45 BST

A narrow 3-2 aggregate win over Crvena Zvezda in the play-off booked Pafos' place in the league stage.

They are the first team from Cyprus to play in the tournament proper since 2017-18 and can look forward to matches against Bayern Munich, Chelsea and Juventus among others.

Kairat Almaty - Sporting Lisbon (A) Thursday 20:00 BST

The Kazakhstan champions are only the second side from the country to play in the Champions League, after Astana in 2015-16.

They beat Celtic on penalties to reach this stage and host Real Madrid on matchday two.

  11. Union Saint-Gilloise secure perfect startpublished at 10:08 BST

    PSV 1-3 Union Saint-Gilloise

Union Saint-Gilloise enjoyed a dream Champions League debut with a historic success at PSV Eindhoven.

The Belgian side won their first Pro League title in 90 years last term to qualify for the competition for the first time in their history.

And they rose to the occasion, getting off to the perfect start with a ninth-minute opener from the penalty spot after Ricardo Pepi caught former Portsmouth defender Christian Burgess in the box with a high challenge.

Promise David stepped up to become the club's first Champions League goalscorer as he calmly slotted past PSV keeper Matej Kovar.

Union doubled their lead in the 39th minute to silence the home fans at Philips Stadion thanks to a terrific solo goal from Anouar Ait El Hadj.

The Belgian midfielder latched on to a loose ball in the middle of the park before storming into the box and hammering home a low strike.

And Kevin Mac Allister - brother of Liverpool midfielder Alexis - wrapped up the perfect evening for Union when he bundled home from a corner with nine minutes left.

Spurs fan here, 45 years so far. A little irritated with the naysayers in some Spurs circles. New manager, new philosophy, new direction, 4 wins from 5, 1 goal conceded. Am not fussed about "attractive" football right now, am fully invested in Frank's plan!! COYS!!!

  13. Trent suffers injury blowpublished at 10:04 BST

Los Blancos were handed an early blow in their win over Marseille when Trent Alexander-Arnold pulled up with what appeared to be a hamstring injury after only three minutes.

That was only his third start in five games since making his move to the Spanish capital from Liverpool this summer.

Trent was left out of Thomas Tuchel's most recent England squad for their World Cup qualifying wins over Andorra and Serbia.

The club is yet to confirm how long the 26-year-old will be out for.

  14. Mbappe's penalty brace helps Real Madrid beat Marseillepublished at 10:00 BST

    Real Madrid 2-1 Marseille

Kylian Mbappe scored two penalties as 10-man Real Madrid battled to victory over Marseille in their Champions League opener.

Timothy Weah had opened the scoring for Marseille in the 22nd minute, beating Thibaut Courtois with a powerful strike after former Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood stole possession from Arda Guler in the middle of the pitch.

But their lead lasted just six minutes as Mbappe, who had come close to scoring in the early stages with an acrobatic bicycle kick, converted his first penalty after Geoffrey Kondogbia had brought down Rodrygo in the box.

Dani Carvajal was sent off with 18 minutes left after he faced off with Geronimo Rulli and moved his head towards the Marseille goalkeeper.

But the 15-time European champions emerged victorious thanks to Mbappe, who twice stepped up to slam spot-kicks past Rulli, taking his club tally to six in five games this season.

Spurs have scored one less goal than Arsenal in the league and won our first CL against a decent Villarreal. Absolutely no issue with our attack, apart from players needing to bed in and find some rhythm. Our bigger problem is in midfield - we need a proper six.

  16. Who is Lloyd Kelly?published at 09:50 BST

    Juventus 4-4 Borussia Dortmund

    Lloyd KellyImage source, Getty Images

The career path of Lloyd Kelly is somewhat of a strange one.

The 26-year-old defender - who can play centrally or as a left back - came through the academy at Bristol City and went on to play 48 times before a move to Bournemouth in 2019.

That summer he was part of the England squad that failed to make it out of their group at the Under-21 European Championships.

He spent five years on the South coast but was signed by Newcastle last summer on a free transfer - only to join Juventus on loan in February after making just 10 appearances for the Magpies.

Juve had an obligation to buy Kelly for £20m this summer and he has since played every minute for the club so far this season, scoring against Inter Milan at the weekend as well as last night's equaliser.

  17. Stoppage-time double saves Juventuspublished at 09:44 BST

    Juventus 4-4 Borussia Dortmund

The game of the night in the Champions League took place in Turin.

After a rather pedestrian first half, EIGHT second-half goals saw Juventus play out a 4-4 draw against Borussia Dortmund.

Dortmund found themselves in the lead twice through Karim Adeyemi and then Felix Nmecha, but goals from Kenan Yildiz and Dusan Vlahovic brought the home side level.

The visitors thought they had won it after regaining the lead and adding a fourth but two goals in stoppage time saw Juve secure a point.

Vlahovic scored his second before former England youth international Lloyd Kelly found the equaliser in the 96th minute to spark wild celebrations at the Allianz Stadium.

Spurs fan who loved being back in the Champions League and getting the result too. But disappointed I paid £70, while others paid £96. You could see how empty parts of the stands were. Villarreal fans hardly even showed up! I hope the club learn from the greed.

What do we think Tottenham fans? Thumbs up if you think the club got its pricing policy wrong for this one, thumbs down if you don't.

  19. Qarabag make Champions League historypublished at 09:31 BST

    Benfica 2-3 Qarabag

    QarabagImage source, Getty Images

It was a stunning, historic comeback from Qarabag at Benfica as they become the first Azerbaijani side to win a Champions League main draw match.

Having qualified for Europe's premier competition for the first time in eight years, Gurban Gurbanov's side found themselves facing a 2-0 deficit after just 16 minutes following goals from Enzo Barrenechea and Vangelis Pavlidis.

The Azerbaijan champions halved the deficit on the half-hour mark through a fine Leandro Andrade finish before team-mate Kady Borges struck the foot of the post.

Three minutes after the break, Gurbanov's side silenced the Estadio da Luz with the leveller. Marko Jankovic's defence-splitting pass found Camilo Duran and he expertly found the far post on his Champions League debut.

Substitute Oleksii Kashchuk got the historic winning goal five minutes from time, picking the ball up with his back to goal before finishing brilliantly on the turn.
