Some football fans cannot be pleased! A team could win the Champions League and there would still be fans complaining that the trophy isn't shiny enough.

We've scored 8 goals in the Premier League already but we lack a decent striker. Richarlison works hard, but lacks pace and awareness. Solanke offers more when he's fit. Tel is too much like Richarlison. Our only hope is for Kolo Muani to start banging them in on a regular basis.

I’ve been working in football for so long and the bottom line I’ve seen over the years is, results is all that matters.

You look back down through the years, teams that have been super successful, it’s an absolute luxury if they also play really attacking football.

There was a good period where Chelsea were dominant winning a lot of trophies but it was based on being very, very solid. Their fans were not disappointed with that at the time.

I think Tottenham fans want the stability - if you want to call it that - of going into games feeling we’ve got a really good chance of winning here.

  4. 'All about the three points for Tottenham'published at 11:37 BST

    Tottenham 1-0 Villarreal

    Chris Sutton
Former Premier League striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

It's all about the three points for Tottenham. It certainly wasn't pretty but they got the job done.

It was a horrendous own goal from Luiz Junior early on. Tottenham weren't fluent, in the second half Villarreal had the better of the game.

It's Thomas Frank's first game in the Champions League as a manager and it's a big win for him, a big win for Tottenham and they move on.

Final round up from Spurs coming your way now and then we'll be turning attention to Manchester City and manager Pep Guardiola who has his pre-match news conference before Thursday evening's game with Napoli this afternoon.

New City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma will also be alongside Guardiola for the news conference.

We'll be bringing you all the updates from that as and when they come, plus we'll have build-up to all of this evening's fixtures as we scoot past lunchtime.

  6. 'Brilliant result' for Spurs and 'not even mildly surprised' at Arsenalpublished at 11:27 BST

    Pat Nevin
Former Scotland winger on BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast

If you can get off to that sort of solid start you can sort of relax a little bit.

The big deal is and it’s a long way ahead, if you can possibly get qualified for the next stage with a game or two to spare then you can rest players. That feels unimportant now but it becomes very, very important nearer the time.

For Spurs, brilliant result for them.

For Arsenal, I have to say, not even mildly surprised. The depth they’ve got in the squad now, they’ve got a right good chance to go really deep in this competition.

Comments like Alan’s (11:04) baffle me. We’re the strongest we’ve been in ages and a world class free kick is the basis for your critique. Arteta isn’t perfect - no manager is - but if he left tomorrow there’d be panic. Let’s see how the season rolls out first, shall we?

    • Arsenal have become the first ever team to win six consecutive European Cup/Uefa Champions League matches against Spanish opponents.
    • Gabriel Martinelli opened the scoring for Arsenal just 36 seconds after coming off the bench - the Gunners' fastest ever goal by a substitute in the Champions League.

Noni Madueke is relentless in the way he always tries to take on his full back.

Whenever he gets the ball he’s so positive and just tries to go forward.

Hew as Arsenal’s most dangerous player against Athletic Club.

It’s been another good performance from him to back up the one at the weekend.

  10. 'Let us not underestimate the job Arsenal have done'published at 11:08 BST

    Athletic Club 0-2 Arsenal

    Paul Robinson
Former Tottenham goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

Arsenal have done really well in the latter part of the second half. It has been a very good away performance and a good start to the Champions League.

Let's not underestimate the job that they've done. They played against the team with the best defensive record in La Liga last season. They were always going to be a hard team to beat at home.

The first half wasn't pretty but Arsenal dug in. The changes that they've made and the signings that they've made in the final third made the difference.

Noni Madueke was excellent for the whole time down the right-hand side. Eberechi Eze never really got in the game and that forced the manager's hand. The substitutes came on and it was perfect timing as the game opened up for them.

A really good start to the season for Arsenal.

Because of Arteta Arsenal will not win the CL or PL. There is something inherent in his way of setting his teams up that will leave Arsenal short. Anfield at the end of August was a case in point.

More from Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta on Gabriel Martinelli's performance on Tuesday evening: "He fully deserves it. I adore Gabi. His attitude, his commitment, his positivity, what he is willing to do for the team.

"We certainly value all of the quality he has and brings to the team - I am so happy he has decided the game for us in the two actions."

The Arsenal players ran to celebrate with Martinelli after his goal, with Riccardo Calafiori pointing at the player's name on the back of his shirt in front of the supporters.

"That's the spirit," added Arteta. "That's why I really enjoy every single day working with them and being part of this team.

"The way they look after each other is genuine. They really want the best for each other and they recognise someone that works every single day in the manner that Gabi does. You can go through struggles or through moments, and recognising that and having that capacity to connect with him, I think it will mean a lot to him."

"I was sure that Gabi was going to react like that. You raise the level to Gabi and he was going to do that.

"They are the moments that hopefully are going to give him the confidence again to go, as he is an outstanding player."

  13. 'Arsenal can make a real impact in Champions League'published at 10:55 BST

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

I would say Arsenal [are a dark horse to win the Champions League] because they reached the semi-finals last season and have added some real quality in the transfer window.

The experience of the last Champions League campaign will serve them well and they now have the strength of squad to finally break through and win one of the major trophies.

Do I think Arsenal will win the Champions League? Not so sure about that, but I think they can make a real impact.

Champions League on a Thursday night? The fixtures calendar has thrown that anomaly at us this week, with Manchester City, Newcastle United and Barcelona among the teams in action.

In the new format of the men's Champions League, one exclusive week per season has been set aside where matches will be played across Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings.

No other games in Uefa competitions - Europa or Conference League - will be scheduled.

There is no waiting around for the Champions League's exclusive week as it has been assigned to matchday one of the league phase.

The Europa League and Conference League also each have one exclusive week.

For the Europa League exclusive week, matches will be played across two days - Wednesday, 24 September and Thursday, 25 September.

In the case of the Conference League, the exclusive week is a one-night situation - with matches taking place on Thursday, 18 December. But it will draw the full focus as no other European competition games are billed for the Tuesday or Wednesday.

    Craig Nelson
    BBC Sport reporter

We are going to return to Arsenal and Tottenham next to round up the main talking points from their opening matches of the Champions League.

The north London rivals both kicked off with a win and a clean sheet, so it's been a pleasant morning so far, much more pleasant than the weather here in Manchester.

We will be taking this chat to the rain-soaked north west for Manchester City's pre-match news conference after midday, then it's up to Newcastle around 16:00 BST.

Both clubs are playing their opening fixtures on Thursday.

In between, we will have plenty of build-up to Liverpool and Chelsea's Champions League openers tonight.

After Union Saint-Gilloise's historic opening night victory, there are three other sides looking to make their mark in Europe's premier competition for the very first time

    Bodo/Glimt - Slavia Prague (A) 17:45 BST

Having made history last year in becoming the first Norwegian side to reach the Europa League semi-finals, Bodo/Glimt beat Sturm Graz in the Champions League play-off to reach the league phase.

They're the first Norwegian side to play in the competition since Rosenborg in 2007-08.

    Pafos - Olympiakos (A) 17:45 BST

A narrow 3-2 aggregate win over Crvena Zvezda in the play-off booked Pafos' place in the league stage.

They are the first team from Cyprus to play in the tournament proper since 2017-18 and can look forward to matches against Bayern Munich, Chelsea and Juventus among others.

Kairat Almaty - Sporting Lisbon (A) Thursday 20:00 BST

The Kazakhstan champions are only the second side from the country to play in the Champions League, after Astana in 2015-16.

They beat Celtic on penalties to reach this stage and host Real Madrid on matchday two.
