Summary

  1. 'You want my shirt?'published at 10:10 British Summer Time 19 September

    Man City 0-0 Inter Milan

There is no doubt that the Inter Milan defenders were sticking closely to Manchester City striker Erling Haaland, not that the prolific Norwegian marksman would have expected anything else.

Judging by this post-match exchange, Haaland, who had scored nine goals in his first four matches of the Premier League season, took the attention in good heart [kind of], despite drawing his first blank of the campaign...

  2. Inter performance 'a template for others'published at 10:02 British Summer Time 19 September

Inter are the Italian champions and I think they showed themselves last night with the defensive display they put together, their organisation and also they really did carry a threat on the break.

It was one of those performances when you see a team play like that against Manchester City at the Etihad, where you think this is a bit of a template for others.

I think generally this is a match where, when it gets to Munich in the final of the season this will be a long forgotten part of the story.

  3. De Bruyne pulls up with groin injurypublished at 09:51 British Summer Time 19 September

Manchester City playmaker Kevin De Bruyne pulled up with a groin injury late in the first half of Wednesday's goalless draw at home to Inter Milan.

The Belgian did not return after the break, replaced by Ilkay Gundogan.

Speaking post-match to TNT Sports about De Bruyne's injury, City boss Pep Guardiola said that he had not spoken with the doctors.

It remains to be seen whether he will be fit for this weekend's huge Premier League clash against Arsenal at the Etihad.

  5. Celtic second in fledgling tablepublished at 09:40 British Summer Time 19 September

With six games still to play in the opening round of matches, Celtic are second in the table, only behind Bayern Munich on goal difference following their staggering 9-2 victory over Dinamo Zagreb.

Aston Villa are third, while Liverpool are sixth.

Can Arsenal join them in the top eight? The Gunners open their campaign with a tricky trip to Atalanta tonight (20:00 BST).

We will have a full build-up to that game later.

  6. How many points do you need to qualify from league phase?published at 09:33 British Summer Time 19 September

According to Opta, 16 points is the magic number for the top eight automatic slots for the knock-out rounds. 15 points (five wins from eight games) should give clubs almost a 75% chance of making it through.

Reaching 10 points all but guarantees a top 24 play-off slot, Opta calculate.

So Chris Sutton believes the Champions League draw has been kind to Celtic.

Their remaining seven fixtures in the competition's extended league phase are below. What do you think?

The top eight will qualify automatically for the last 16, teams that finish from ninth to 24th will go into an extra knockout round, while those that finish in the bottom 12 will go out.

Click thumbs up if you think Celtic can make it through, thumbs down if you think they won't:

    Celtic 5-1 Slovan Bratislava

    Chris Sutton
Former Blackburn and Celtic striker on Football Daily

I think the draw has been generous to Celtic. I think if you'd have hand-picked a draw, you wouldn't have been far off the teams Celtic have to play coming up.

It's a start and that's all it is.

I think Brendan Rogers and the players won't be getting too far ahead of themselves. I think it's Dortmund up next.

The pressure was on them, you talk about playing against a lower-ranked team in the competition.

I only know too well 60,000 Celtic fans would have been expecting the team to win and of course it wasn't as simple as that, especially with Celtic's recent record in the Champions League.

It is the perfect start. It gives them a real foothold now in this competition.

  12. We were greedy for more goals - Rodgerspublished at 09:09 British Summer Time 19 September

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers was understandably proud of his players' performance: "You could see right from the off, the players were absolutely sensational. When we turned the screw, we were really, really difficult to play against.

"Mentality, hunger, greedy for more goals, greedy for the ball, everyone working right until the very end and we could've had more than five.

"There was big expectation coming into the game, but for us it was just about us not complicating the game.

"When we turned the screw in the second half, we were really, really difficult to play against.

"It's the start that we wanted, I don't think we could have asked for a better start, except for a clean sheet which was unfortunate we didn't keep.

"Our next three games are tough but exciting, we've made a fantastic start."

On back-to-back wins in the Champions League, he said: "It's a little step, but an important step we've taken."

On Celtic's struggles in this competition of late, Rodgers added: "I want to change that mood and that feeling. We've worked on that from the beginning of pre-season so that we can have that belief.

"This is the level, just don't overthink it.

"The razzmatazz around the Champions League is amazing, but we are playing a team who are defending in 4-4-2, which we will play against here in the league. Okay, it's different tiers, but it's still the same idea."

    Celtic 5-1 Slovan Bratislava

While Chris Sutton was part of the 5 Live commentary team covering Manchester City's goalless draw at home to Inter Milan, all the action was taking place at his former club Celtic.

Sir Rod Stewart was amongst those enjoying the scenes during what was Celtic's first ever victory in the opening game of a Champions League campaign.

There is no footage of how Sir Rod was faring after Celtic's fifth goal, but he was certainly sailing on a wave of emotion for their first...

When anybody rocks up to the Etihad you think that Manchester City are going to dominate but Inter had their game plan and it worked exceptionally well in the first-half.

They set up well out of possession but they're very brave on the ball and they're a team who certainly know what they're doing. They could go deep into this competition, they're very capable.

Second half, City made the substitutions [replacing Kevin de Bruyne and Savinho with Ilkay Gundogan and Phil Foden] and had a couple of opportunities, but so did Inter.

In the end, I think a draw was about the right result.

  16. 'A fascinating game to watch tactically'published at 08:44 British Summer Time 19 September

    Man City 0-0 Inter Milan

Manchester City supporter Emily Brobyn, speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast earlier, viewed their goalless draw at home to Inter Milan as a point earned, rather than two dropped.

She said: "I'm not just saying it to be positive, but I think it will prove to be quite a useful point.

"Inter were champions of Serie A by some margin last year, they came to the Etihad and set up so well. I thought it was a fascinating game to watch tactically. Inter were so well drilled and well organised defensively.

"At times we did look quite one-dimensional and slow in attack. I do wonder if there is an overreliance sometimes on Erling Haaland, but we did have some chances and we scuffed them, so I think all in all a point is a really good result."

  17. 'A lot of credit has to go to Inter'published at 08:37 British Summer Time 19 September

It was not a Manchester City performance which we are normally accustomed to. They didn't play with the zip and slickness which they normally do but I think a lot of credit has to go to Inter for the way that they played and defended.

    Man City 0-0 Inter Milan

So we know that Pep Guardiola was happy with his Manchester City side's performance against a dangerous Inter Milan outfit.

The Spaniard certainly seemed to see Wednesday's goalless draw at the Etihad as a point gained rather than two dropped.

But what did Match of the Day pundits Stephen Warnock, Joe Hart and Julien Laurens make of City's display.

Click on the play icon above, as the panel discusses how Inter boss Simone Inzaghi's tactics and Nicolo Barella's star performance earned the Italian champions a deserved point.
