Summary

  1. 'It was frantic'published at 11:07 Greenwich Mean Time

    John Bennett
BBC Final Score reporter on The Football News Show

It did feel like I was revising for my A-Levels, I had so many notes. It was frantic.

Someone like Lille, they started 12th in the table, they ended up in the top eight. It was moving all the time the league table.

In terms of the format, they had two aims, every game mattering and more games between the big sides. The fans in the ground, I wonder how easy it was for them to follow it?

  2. Postpublished at 11:06 Greenwich Mean Time

How did you enjoy Wednesday's 18 matches, BBC Radio 5 Live's John Bennett admits to being a bit frantic by the end of it...

  3. Opening sequencepublished at 11:03 Greenwich Mean Time

Right, we are listening to the opening speeches now as the preamble begins.

Cue a dramatic montage of all the best bits from the league phase to start proceedings. Classic.

The draw will not actually begin for another 10 minutes or so.

  4. 'There is always evolution of competitions'published at 11:02 Greenwich Mean Time

    Stephen Warnock
Former Aston Villa and Liverpool defender on The Football News Show

Stephen Warnock on the new Champions League format:

I think there's a feeling amongst fans that they miss the home and away legs, but there's a bit of a different feel to it. When you listen to Mikel Arteta and Andrew Robertson, they're delighted that they don't need to go to the knock-out play-offs, where there's more games.

I think the big thing is that there is always evolution of competitions and it did have to change at some point and we are in the infancy of it now. Looking at it, how is it, we're still judging it. At the end of the season we'll have a better idea how it all played out but so far I've enjoyed it.

Tottenham have reportedly had a £50m bid for Bayern Munich winger Mathys Tel accepted.

BBC Sport have pursued the story and although some sources insist that it is true - we would like to speak to more sides involved in the deal - before committing to the story.

However, the same reports also say that Tel has not made a decision to join the north Londoners as he awaits offers from others clubs, with Bayern's sporting director Max Eberl on the record in saying that at least seven clubs are interested.

Meanwhile, striker Dane Scarlett scored against Elfsborg yesterday and will stay in Ange Postecoglou's squad

  11. How does today's Champions League draw work?published at 10:33 Greenwich Mean Time

You thought the confusion was over, didn't you?

Well, here we go again with the next stage of this new Champions League format - the big old play-off draw!

Where a team finishes in the league table determines who they will face in the play-offs.

Sides are grouped together in pairs, so in the knockout play-off, those teams that finished ninth and 10th, for example, will play one of the sides that finished 23rd or 24th, and so on.

This means Atalanta (9th) and Borussia Dortmund (10th) will face one of either Sporting Lisbon (23rd) and Club Brugge (24th).

Today's draw will determine the play-off ties and the play-off ties only.

The draw for the last 16 will be made on Friday 21 February.

You can see a visual representation of who can draw who in the graphic below.

  13. 'I'm trying to make the best of the situation'published at 10:20 Greenwich Mean Time

Newcastle v Fulham (Sat, 15:00 GMT)

    Newcastle United

Finally Newcastle boss Eddie Howe on transfer window: "It's probably not ideal for us in this moment to be light in that position but it is what it is and I've always said I've got no problems dealing with that. I'm trying to make the best of the situation, so we'll look at solutions and players in different positions if we need to. That's my job to try and find a solution if that happens."

  14. Chloe Kelly: Why did she choose Arsenal?published at 10:18 Greenwich Mean Time

There had been rumours that Chloe Kelly would join either Brighton or Manchester United on loan for the rest of the season heading into deadline day.

Kelly's social media post the night before made it clear she wanted out at Manchester City so it was a question of if a deal could be made.

United had seemed to be frontrunners but Kelly's former club Arsenal swooped in and had a deal accepted.

Kelly played for Arsenal from 2015-2018. She said upon her return it was a "pursuit of happiness" and that "your roots always pull you back.

The first game she is eligible to play is on 9 February for the Gunners in the FA Cup. She cannot play this weekend in the WSL or in the club's League Cup semi as they are both against her parent club Man City.

When she does get on the pitch she will wear the number 18, the number she wore in her first spell at the club. It is also worth remembering Kelly is out of contract with City this summer and so can move on a free.

  15. Chloe Kelly: Why has she left Man City?published at 10:16 Greenwich Mean Time

Chloe Kelly's loan move to Arsenal was confirmed last night but why did she want to leave Manchester City?

The England international, who scored the winner against Germany in the Euro 2022 final, has been struggling for minutes this season.

City had only started one Women's Super League game this campaign and with the Euros this summer she wants more game time.

There are more layers to it than a lack of minutes with Kelly coming out publicly saying the way Man City had treated this transfer window had harmed her "mental well being".

She wrote on social media on Wednesday: "To be dictated whom I can and can't join with only four months left of the football season is having a huge impact on not only my career by my mental wellbeing.

"The situation has been dragged on for too long, it's disappointing and not right."

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe on Callum Wilson and Harvey Barnes: "No chance for this weekend. Callum is getting there. We have seen him in training this week, albeit not the whole session but parts of it and he looked good. But no, the plan is not to involve in this week, but there's a chance for the games following. Harvey is a little bit behind. I think he's going to be within the next two to three weeks."

  17. 'I expect the squad to remain the same'published at 10:12 Greenwich Mean Time

Newcastle v Fulham (Sat, 15:00 GMT)

    Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe on whether there will be any more outgoings in the transfer window: "As we stand now, currently I don't [see any more outgoings], but things can change. As we stand at the moment, I expect the squad to remain the same."

  19. Newcastle 'not actively looking' in the transfer windowpublished at 10:09 Greenwich Mean Time

Newcastle v Fulham (Sat, 15:00 GMT)

    Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe on the transfer window: "We knew, barring something huge happening, that we didn't expect it would be a window that we could recruit in. I've said that right from from the outset and despite being linked with numerous players, that's still the case.

"We're not actively looking to bring players in but hopefully the squad's in a decent place if we can get Callum and Harvey back fit and firing within a few weeks. I think the the squad will look good."

Brighton have rejected a significant offer from Saudi Pro-League club Al-Nassr for Japan winger Kaoru Mitoma.

The bid was believed to be worth €65m (£54.42m) but sources with an understanding of the situation say Brighton have no need to sell and dismissed the offer out of hand.

However, it is anticipated Al-Nassr will return with a higher bid.

While Brighton are confident in their position and believe Mitoma has no desire to leave, the sums involved are bound to at least be considered seriously by the 27-year-old and it cannot be completely ruled out that a deal will go through.

Mitoma signed a contract extension in October 2023 that runs to June 2027.

He has made 92 appearances and scored 18 goals in all competitions and is the only Brighton player to have featured in all 23 Premier League games so far this season.

The Saudi Pro-League transfer deadline is on Friday evening.
