Summary

  1. Dramatic night at Ibroxpublished at 08:52 Greenwich Mean Time

    Rangers 2-1 Union Saint-Gilloise

So Tottenham's young goalscorers provided a welcome boost for the club following a difficult run of injuries, poor form and faltering results in the Premier League.

Rangers have had an equally difficult spell in the Scottish Premiership, where they have fallen 10 points behind leaders Celtic, but enjoyed a dramatic finish to their league phase campaign in the Europa League.

Philippe Clement's side claimed a 2-1 win at home to Belgian outfit Union Saint-Galloise before results elsewhere turned in their favour to gift them a top-eight finish...

  2. 'Moore is so highly thought of'published at 08:44 Greenwich Mean Time

    Tottenham 3-0 Elfsborg

    Stephen Kelly
Former Tottenham defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

I think Mikey Moore will stay around it [the team sheet]. He has been in it beforehand, even when players were fit. He is so highly thought of by everyone there. When he comes on the pitch he affects the game.

He has been ill for a bit as well so he has not had the opportunity to stay involved for as long as he would have liked.

  3. Spurs scorers - who are Oyindamola Ajayi & Mikey Moore?published at 08:42 Greenwich Mean Time

    Tottenham 3-0 Elfsborg

London-born OyindamolaAjayi was at Bromley before joining Tottenham's academy.

The forward made two appearances for the under-18s in the 2021-22 season while still a schoolboy.

Meanwhile, attacking midfielder Mikey Moore joined Tottenham a decade ago and has progressed through the ranks to play for the first team.

Earlier this season, Tottenham's England midfielder James Maddison likened Moore to Brazil's Neymar.

"From minute 45 to 65 I thought we had Neymar on the left wing," said Maddison about Moore after the Europa League win over AZ Alkmaar on 24 October.

"He was brilliant. Just demanding the ball and fearless."

  4. 'It's pretty phenomenal stuff'published at 08:37 Greenwich Mean Time

    Tottenham 3-0 Elfsborg

    Stephen Kelly
Former Tottenham defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

This is exactly what the club needed. With everything that has been going on with the senior players injured and to have a night like this at the Tottenham stadium and three homegrown players can all score, all debut goals and to have a 17-year-old break Jimmy Greaves' record, it's pretty phenomenal stuff.

You also get Micky van de Ven back on the pitch.

All the negative stuff that has happened is, I won't say completely eradicated in one night, but it has given the Spurs fans a little bit of joy.

Europa League is something they can cling on to for potential silverware.

  5. Spurs scorers - who is Dane Scarlett?published at 08:35 Greenwich Mean Time

    Tottenham 3-0 Elfsborg

Tottenham's opening goal scorer, 20-year-old striker Dane Scarlett, had been on loan in the Championship at Oxford United until recently.

"There was a certain number nine, Harry Kane, at this football club that went on loan to Leyton Orient, Millwall, Leicester, and ended up becoming a legend of this club," said Peter Crouch on TNT Sports.

"Of course that is a lot for Dane Scarlett to live up to, that calibre of player. But when he came on I thought his all-round game was brilliant."

Scarlett has also had loan spells in the Championship at Ipswich and in League One with Portsmouth.

  7. 'A really significant night for Tottenham's season'published at 08:20 Greenwich Mean Time

    Tottenham 3-0 Elfsborg

    Andy Stevenson
BBC Sport on Europa League debrief podcast

I think this could be a really significant night for Tottenham's season. Three of their academy players - when you consider their injury problems that we all know Spurs have got - have stepped up and scored their first goals for the club and it has been pointed out to me that the three goalscorers' age combined is 56 years [younger than manager Ange Postecoglou between the three of them].

The likes of Dominic Solanke and James Maddison were down there on the touchline watching the match and the way they celebrated those youngsters' goals was quite significant.

I think this does release a bit of pressure on Ange Postecoglou.

There is plenty of reaction to Thursday's morale-boosting victory for Tottenham's youthful side in the latest episode of Football Daily.

BBC Radio 5 Live commentator Andy Stevenson joins presenter Steve Crossman from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Europa League Debrief, which you can listen to in full on BBC Sounds.

There is also reaction to Manchester United's win in Bucharest from Alistair Bruce-Ball, Rene Meulensteen and Paul Robinson, while Gavin Wallace joins the panel from Ibrox, where Rangers progressed to the last 16 in dramatic fashion.

Stick with us for reaction from all three ties.

  9. 'Made in Tottenham'published at 08:07 Greenwich Mean Time

Injuries may have forced Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou to turn to the club's academy players, but they more than repaid him against Elfsborg in the Europa League on Thursday night.

"I just said it was made in Tottenham tonight," said Postecoglou after goals from Dane Scarlett, 20, 19-year-old Damola Ajayi and winger Mikey Moore, 17, secured victory and a last-eight finish.

"It's brilliant for the club and I'm sure there are academy coaches and players who won't sleep tonight because they are pretty excited.

"We kind of knew we would have to rely on some young players tonight, and all the way through this campaign to be honest.

"I thought they stood up really well. The whole group played well but we were going to need some young boys to make an impact and not just the three goalscorers.

"We had a couple of 18-year-olds in there as well who continue to drive us on. So it is a great night for the club and something the whole academy should be proud of."

  11. All will be revealedpublished at 07:50 Greenwich Mean Time

We know, it seems complicated, but should become a lot clearer once today's draws are made.

Remember, you can follow live updates of the draws for both the Champions League (11:00 GMT) and Europa League (12:00) via this page.

There will also be a live stream of the Champions League draw at the top of this page.

  12. Who can Man Utd & Spurs meet in the last 16?published at 07:47 Greenwich Mean Time

Manchester United finished third in the Europa League table, one place above Tottenham, meaning they are grouped together in the draw so will not be able to meet until the final.

United and Spurs will play either AZ Alkmaar, Midtjylland, Real Sociedad or Galatasaray in the last 16.

Those ties will take place on 6 and 13 March.

Once the draw for the last 16 is made on 21 February, teams will then know their potential route to the final.

You can check out a graphic here that explains this further.

  13. How does the Europa League draw work?published at 07:39 Greenwich Mean Time

Where a team finishes in the league table determines which teams they can play in the knockout rounds.

Sides are grouped together in pairs, so in the knockout play-off those teams that finished ninth and 10th, for example, can play one of the sides that finished 23rd or 24th, and so on.

That means Bodo/Glimt (ninth) or Anderlecht (10th) can play either Twente (23rd) or Fenerbahce (24th) in the knockout play-off.

Today's draw will determine those ties and the full groupings are below.

Sides in the top eight have also been paired together, so they can play one of four teams in the last 16.

To continue our example, Olympiakos (seventh) or Rangers (eighth) could play either Bodo/Glimt, Anderlecht, Twente or Fenerbahce in the last 16, the draw for which will be made on 21 February.

  14. Who is through in Europa League?published at 07:32 Greenwich Mean Time

So what happens now in the Europa League.

Well, as mentioned, the top eight teams progress straight through to the last 16: Lazio, Athletic Bilbao, Manchester United, Tottenham, Eintracht Frankfurt, Lyon, Olympiakos, Rangers.

The sides that finished from ninth to 24th will go into a two-legged knockoutplay-off: Bodo/Glimt, Anderlecht, FCSB, Ajax, Real Sociedad, Galatasaray, Roma, Ferencvaros, Viktoria Plzen, Porto, Midtjylland, Union Saint-Gilloise, AZ Alkmaar, PAOK, Twente, Fenerbahce.

Those ties will be played on 13 and 20 February.

The sides that finished from 25th to 36th are eliminated: Braga, Elfsborg, Hoffenheim, Besiktas, Maccabi Tel Aviv, Slavia Prague, Malmo, Rigas FC, Ludogorets, Dynamo Kyiv, Nice, Qarabag.

  15. Mainoo stars as Man Utd secure Europa League last-16 spotpublished at 07:25 Greenwich Mean Time

    Joe Rindl
    BBC Sport

Manchester United advanced straight to the Europa League last 16 as Kobbie Mainoo scored one and assisted another to help Ruben Amorim's side to a win at FCSB.

After a relatively drab first 60 minutes in Bucharest Mainoo's low pass found wing-back Diogo Dalot, who was unmarked at the back post to comfortably tap United ahead.

Eight minutes later the England midfielder got on to the scoresheet by side-footing home Alejandro Garnacho's cut-back.

The visitors end the competition's league phase in third, and will play one of Real Sociedad, Galatasaray, AZ Alkmaar or FC Midtjylland in a last-16 tie in March.

They avoid a two-legged play-off round in February, which after the match Amorim said would be "really important" to give his players more time to train and "build connections".

Rangers upset the odds to earn an impressive top-eight finish in the Europa League after Vaclav Cerny's second-half strike proved decisive against Union Saint-Gilloise.

A direct route to the last 16 seemed very unlikely until deep into the second half at Ibrox given the necessity for results elsewhere to go the Scottish Premiership side's way, but those all fell perfectly into place.

Philippe Clement's team will now face one of Bodo/Glimt, Anderlecht, Twente or Fenerbahce in March depending who progresses from their play-off fixtures.

Rangers - who started the night in 13th place having played four of the eventual top seven - had a straightforward assignment. Win and see how the cards fell.

They did that, despite a number of scares, to earn an incredible outcome.

  17. Teenager Moore sets record as Spurs reach Europa League last 16published at 07:13 Greenwich Mean Time

Tottenham overcame yet another injury setback to reach the last 16 of the Europa League as teenage record-breaker Mikey Moore sealed victory over Elfsborg.

Spurs, who were already without 12 players because of injury and ineligibility, lost substitute defender Radu Dragusin when he went down hurt in the second half with the game goalless.

But substitute Dane Scarlett, 20, lifted the mood by heading the home side into a 70th-minute lead before 19-year-old fellow substitute Damola Ajayi made it 2-0.

Seventeen-year-old winger Moore then fired his first goal for the club in the fourth minute of stoppage time, a wonderful low finish after a powerful run.

In doing so, London-born Moore (17 years and 172 days) broke Jimmy Greaves' record (17 years and 245 days in October 1957) to become the youngest-ever English scorer in major men's European competition.
