  2. Van Nistelrooy dismisses job fears amid awful runpublished at 15:39 Greenwich Mean Time 24 January

    Leicester City

Ruud Van Nistelrooy has dismissed concerns that he could be sacked from his role as Leicester manager just 56 days into his reign.

The Foxes have lost their past seven Premier League games and another defeat on Sunday at Tottenham would equal a club record run set in 2001.

They are second bottom, two points from safety, following last weekend's 2-0 defeat by Fulham.

Van Nistelrooy - who only replaced Steve Cooper in November - has won just two of his 10 games in all competitions, one of which was the 6-2 FA Cup third round victory over QPR.

"I'm focused on getting this team out of the situation, that's my only concern," he said, when asked if he was worried about his job.

"I'm with the players, working with everyone at Leicester to get the best out of this squad, and in difficult times. In tough times, you need to be strong, show character, work and persist and be committed.

"We are united and committed. That is the spirit and you can see that on the pitch. I can see a team with spirit and fight. If we continue this run will end."

  3. Arsenal 'actively looking' to sign striker - Artetapublished at 15:36 Greenwich Mean Time 24 January

Arsenal are "actively looking" to sign a striker in the January transfer window who is able to "make an impact", says manager Mikel Arteta.

Arsenal have been short of attacking options after losing Bukayo Saka to a long-term hamstring injury and striker Gabriel Jesus with an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

The Gunners are challenging for the Premier League title for the third season in a row but a number of injuries to key players and inconsistent results has seen them slip to six points behind Liverpool, who also have a game in hand.

Arsenal have also been knocked out of the FA Cup by Manchester United and are trailing Newcastle 2-0 after the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final. In both of those matches the Gunners missed a host of goalscoring opportunities.

"My opinion is clear that we lost two very very important players, Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus. So we lack goals, we lack people, we lack options in the frontline, it's clear," Arteta said.

"It is clear that in the period that we lost them, ideally we need some help. We were short already and now we are even shorter. The team still copes with that."

However, he said he would only do "what is right for the club" and is "actively looking" to "get the right player".

  4. Injuries to blame for Tottenham form - Postecogloupublished at 15:31 Greenwich Mean Time 24 January

Tottenham head coach Ange Postecoglou says the club are in a stronger position than when he took charge 18 months ago, despite their poor form this season.

Spurs have won just one of their past 10 Premier League matches, which has seen the club drop to 15th in the table.

Injuries have blighted Spurs' campaign, with key players such as Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie missing large chunks of the season.

The Australian's training methods and style of play have come under question given the number of muscle injuries sustained at the club this term.

Asked why his second season in charge had been more difficult, Postecoglou said: "It's just injuries.

"I mean you can walk outside and say, 'Jeez it's really bright', and say to yourself maybe it's not the sun. But it is the sun, mate, we've just got injuries.

"Every decision that is made is from me."

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner on team news: "Unfortunately Cheick Doucouré and Chadi Riad both have knee injuries and aren’t available for Sunday’s game. The doctors have to look at them, and let’s see how it goes, but no [we don’t have a timeframe for their return] at the moment.

“Joel Ward is still out, Adam Wharton is still out.

“França is training with us but needs more time on the pitch to get into his best shape, so he won’t be available.

Football is so often defined by tribalism, fuelled by fury, disdain and a desperation to win at all costs. Every club has their rivals, the clubs their fans love to hate. There is seldom room for friendship.

Except, perhaps, if you support Schalke 04 and FC Nuremberg, German football's best friends.

Two of the country's most successful clubs, currently residing in Bundesliga 2, meet at the Veltins Arena on Saturday for the latest chapter in a remarkable story of community, dating back almost half a century.

With over 400km separating Gelsenkirchen, Schalke's home city, and Nuremberg, there is no logical connection. Incredibly, nobody knows for sure how their special relationship began.

BBC Sport attempts to explain how two clubs became unlikely 'anti-rivals'.

  15. 'I don't know if we will have Tavernier tomorrow'published at 14:42 Greenwich Mean Time 24 January

Bournemouth v Nottingham Forest (Sat, 15:00 GMT)

    Bournemouth

There wasn't much positive team news from Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola, who still has eight players ruled out through injury: "Marcus Tavernier is the only player who has started training with the group but I don't know if we are going to have him tomorrow. We will have to decide."

  16. 'We will have to be very good if we want to beat them'published at 14:39 Greenwich Mean Time 24 January

Bournemouth v Nottingham Forest (Sat, 15:00 GMT)

    Bournemouth

Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola spoke about facing Nottingham Forest, who are seven points above them in the league table: "We will have to be very, very good if we want to beat them. Defensively, they are elite. Absolutely elite.

"They have amazing numbers in the defensive stats, they have the spirit also and are full of confidence. We will have to be very good, especially offensively.

"It's very difficult to have clear chances against them so we will have to be clinical, very good in front of goal because they don't give you a lot.

"When they score the first goal, it is difficult to turn the game against them. It is always important to start strong and win the first duels."
