Manchester United scored a 90th minute winning goal for the eighth time in major European competition - more often than any other English side (Arsenal and Chelsea with seven each).

Meanwhile, Ruben Amorim is the third United manager to win each of their first three games in charge in major European competition after Matt Busby in 1956 and Alex Ferguson in 1990.

  2. 'It's really important to stay in this position'published at 07:28 Greenwich Mean Time

    Manchester United 2-1 Rangers

    Manchester United

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim, speaking to TNT Sports: "We did well. We played better with the ball. I think we started well and then we lost control of the game because of some bad decisions but the lads did well.

"We are so near the second goal with so many chances, it's so hard but they recover.

"We are not playing our best but we regrouped from the last game. I know the opponent is different. It wasn't as fast. You can see the connections.

"I think we need to be more clinical in the right moments because that can help us a lot."

Manchester United skipper Bruno Fernandes scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner to give his side victory in their all-British match with Rangers at Old Trafford.

Rangers' fans were still celebrating what they thought was a famous draw after Cyriel Dessers had brilliantly levelled United's opener with an 88th-minute drive into the bottom corner from the edge of the area.

But Fernandes cut those celebrations short when he got on the end of Lisandro Martinez's angled cross to the far post and drove a first-time shot through Jack Butland's legs.

From his seat in the directors' box, legendary United boss and former Rangers striker Sir Alex Ferguson could only shake his head in wonderment at the drama of it all.

At least the ending meant the game was not known purely for Butland's terrible own goal, when he came to clear Christian Eriksen's 52nd-minute corner and succeeded only in punching the ball into his own net.

  4. 'You need your leaders to stand up and they did'published at 07:18 Greenwich Mean Time

    Hoffenheim 2-3 Tottenham

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou, speaking to TNT Sports: "It's not easy to get away wins in Europe. I was watching the Champions League last night and there was only one away victory so it's tough.

"Credit to the boys, I thought they were outstanding first half and played really well. We looked a bit tired in the second half but hung on. Sonny [Son Heung-Min] scored a great goal to give us that extra buffer. We had the school boys out there in the end.

"We wanted to be a bit more aggressive and that is when Madders [James Maddison] is at his best. In the context of the game, we kind of knew if we could score early and put some pressure on them then it would give us a good foothold in the game.

"He was good all night but got a bit tired in the second half but he caused them a lot of problems.

"I thought the senior boys today all really stood up. You need your leaders to stand up and they did tonight."

There has not been a great deal for Tottenham fans to smile about this season.

Spurs have won just one of their past nine games in the Premier League, are closer to the relegation places than the top eight and have a lengthy injury list that would hurt most teams.

But despite all that, there is still a chance this season could prove, as some pundits say, to be a special one.

That is because they are in three cup competitions, with Thursday's 3-2 win at Hoffenheim putting them on the verge of reaching the knockout stage of the Europa League.

Their dreadful Premier League form means it will be hard for any Tottenham fan to link this season to the word success, but Spurs have not won a trophy of any sort since 2008, so securing some silverware would be a huge positive.

"It could be a remarkable season for Tottenham," former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves said on TNT Sports.

"They could win a couple of trophies."

Son Heung-min scored twice as Tottenham Hotspur claimed a much-needed Europa League win at Hoffenheim to put them in a strong position to qualify automatically for the knockout stage.

Spurs have struggled domestically in a difficult season and Sunday's defeat at Everton left them 15th in the Premier League.

But Thursday's trip to Germany provided welcome respite, with Son's double and an early James Maddison strike securing a victory that moved them up to fourth in the league phase of the Europa League, though they finished the night sixth after the later kick-offs.
