Summary

  1. English clubs looking good for 'top five'published at 10:34 Greenwich Mean Time

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter

It's been another good week for English clubs in European football, with two more wins last night taking the tally up to four for the week.

Aside from Manchester City, all will definitely make it at least into the play-offs.

That will eventually bring more points in the battle to get one of the two European Performance Spots in the Champions League next season - Germany and Italy got them this season.

England are now well clear of Spain and Italy, with Germany and France much further behind.

It is not all about the bigger countries but all the points are divided by the number of teams each country started the three European competitions with. It is the bigger countries whose teams tend to last longest as a whole, which is why they are thought most likely to get the spots.

Five English teams will qualify for next season's Champions League as it stands.

Football faithfuls must include Terry and Carragher. Terry had the edge in England, but both were loyal stewards of the club. Also, the "kids" Giggs and Scholes had those golden years at United.

"I think we're both aware of the situation. Yes, there is interest in him from other clubs. There is potentially a chance he could leave before the window, but until that moment, and if that moment never arises, he's still a valuable member of the squad.

Southampton v Newcastle United (Sat, 15:00 GMT)

    Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe on Southampton: "I take that they're more mixed now, I'd say that there are still elements of that possession-based play in their game.

"I don't think that will go away quickly because they've been playing that way for a long period of time, the new manager is obviously embracing that as well.

"Changed potentially in the structure and off the ball, I think, is the biggest change where we've seen a very aggressive man-for-man style, off the ball which is what we are going to have to do well against and try to combat."

Despite a couple of games played with other 'clubs'... I think it would be fair to call Steve Bull a Wolves Faithful. He turned down the chance of Premiership football when offers arose so that he could try and achieve it with WWFC. Legend!
