Summary

  1. 'These England players are used to pressure'published at 14:26 British Summer Time 5 June

    Natasha Dowie
Former England striker on BBC News

It puts a smile on my face when we talk about England having pressure because the era I played in, probably 10 years ago, that wasn't the case. We didn't feel that pressure, we always kind of fell short at the end.

This England team now are heavily favourites with Spain. They're going to every major tournament now with a target on their back - and that's exactly what we wanted, it's what we always dreamed about.

The beautiful thing is, these players are used to this pressure, not just on the international stage but also at club level. We have Champions League winners in the squad, we have players who have won the treble. So they've been there and done it.

Lara thinks it's coming home [yikes]. What do you think?

World champions Spain look to be the team to beat heading into Euro 2025, but it is unlikely they will have it all their own way.

There are 16 strong teams in the finals, which will be held in Switzerland from 2-27 July.

Two from each group will progress to the quarter-finals.

Here are the four groups, in order of current European ranking:

    • Group A: Norway (7th), Iceland (10th), Finland (12th), Switzerland (hosts - 14th)
    • Group B: Spain (world champions - 1st), Belgium (8th), Italy (9th), Portugal (13th)
    • Group C: Germany (2nd), Sweden (6th), Denmark (11th), Poland (15th)
    • Group D: France (3rd), England (European champions - 4th), Netherlands (5th), Wales (16th)
  3. 'The revolving door of major tournament football'published at 14:23 British Summer Time 5 June

    Rachel Brown-Finnis
Ex-England goalkeeper, speaking to BBC Sport

Michelle Agyemang produced big moments in big games and deserves her spot. Nikita Parris has been successful for England and won a Euros.

I am disappointed for her but that is the revolving door of major tournament football.

Agyemang is young, fresh and ready to go.

So happy that Lotte Wubben-Moy has been called up!

    Olivia

I’m happy with that squad. Some big losses announced in the last week or so, but still a great mix of talent and experience. I’m calling it now: England to top our group (yes I know it’s a tough one!) and go all the way to face Spain in the final!

    Martin

Thank god for Alex Greenwood’s inclusion as well! Her pinpoint precision in finding her teammates is second to none. And Jess Carter is a brick wall. Of course we will miss Earps (sob) et al but brilliant selection. *Quietly singing ‘its coming home’*

  5. Agyemang an 'exciting unknown'published at 14:21 British Summer Time 5 June

    Natasha Dowie
Former England striker on BBC News

It's a really strong squad. It's pretty much what I predicted. I thought Nikita Parris may go in ahead of Michelle Agyemang but to be honest, when you look at that front line, you've got a lot of expereience there in major tournaments. Maybe Sarina Wiegman is thinking a wildcard is more exciting, more effective.

We've seen what Agyemang can do within seconds of a game on her debut, so I think that's quite exciting to have her as a bit of an unknown. Agyemang has no fear, she has nothing to lose, so that's probably going to be the most powerful thing when she enters this tournament - her first major tournament.

A good mix of youth and experience. Don't agree with James inclusion. Yes, she can make things happen, but it's too early for her. She won't be match sharp or in sync with her teammates. We have seen time and time again its a recipe for disaster. We have enough squad depth, and players who can rotate if need be.

  7. What a moment for Agyemangpublished at 14:19 British Summer Time 5 June

Brighton forward Michelle Agyemang, who is on loan from Arsenal, scored after 41 seconds of her England debut against Belgium in April but was an unused substitute in Tuesday's defeat in Spain.

The 19-year-old may have feared this was a tournament too soon, but Sarina Wiegman has decided to blood the teenager in Switzerland.

A bold move, but could it pay off?

I hope Chloe Kelly can get some proper game time as she’s been amazing in the back end of the season for Arsenal and really want her to do well in the Euros. Another winning goal in the final perhaps!

Bit harsh on Parris after a great season, but I can see why Wiegman has picked the massive talent of James and a new player in Agyeman. Can't wait for the tournament to kick off!

  12. Kearns & Parris miss outpublished at 14:11 British Summer Time 5 June

From the England squad for their recent Nations League games against Spain and Portugal, those who are not named include:

    • Mary Earps, Fran Kirby and Millie Bright - which we already knew
    • Ella Morris, who suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury in training last month
    • Missy-Bo Kearns and Nikita Parris

Arsenal defender Lotte Wubben-Moy is named in the squad after replacing Bright in the Nations League squad.

  13. Big names announce squadpublished at 14:10 British Summer Time 5 June

England players past and present, plus a sprinkling of celebrities, have introduced the players selected to defend England's title at the European Championships this summer.

Ellen White and Alex Scott are in there, Bukayo Saka and Jude Bellingham from the men's squad are too. David Beckham and Ian Wright also make an appearance.

Honestly that’s a strong squad. The players who have experience are all there, mixing with the newbies. How many tournaments for Lucy Bronze is this now? Fabulous player.

Happy to see Lauren James and 19-year-old Brighton forward Michelle Agyemang in there, along with young hope Aggie Beever-Jones?

So Lauren James is named in Sarina Wiegman's England Euro 2025 squad.

The 23-year-old has not played since she suffered a hamstring injury during England's 5-0 Nations League win over Belgium at Ashton Gate in April.

James was a standout performer when the Lionesses reached the World Cup final in 2023.

A big-game player, but how fit is she?

Leah Williamson has got to be on the plane. I fear we will be a crumbly back wall without her in the defence. Apart from that, this squad has lots of potential, despite the obviously disappointing losses of Earps, Bright and Kirby. Plenty of young talent coming through, the future is bright for the Lionesses. It'll be interesting to see who our first-choice midfielders will be. We got exposed the other night, and that is a worry, especially against better teams.
