Interesting what Karen Bardsley said about ruthlessness of Wiegman. Just because Earps and Kirby not in squad, there was no need for them to announce their retirement before the Euros. And no James shouldn't be included, there are enough players being gambled on match fitness being rushed back without proving back to best.

  2. Alessia Russo or Aggie Beever-Jones?published at 13:10 British Summer Time 5 June

Alessia Russo is England’s number nine. I believe she will start the Euros, bar hopefully nothing happens, but Aggie Beever-Jones is a great option to come on if anything happens.

She’s got great energy, she scores goals and she has a little bit different of a profile to Russo but I just think it’s really healthy competition. It will push them both.

It’s great competition for Sarina and to have that as nines. We had that at Euro 2022 with Beth England and Alessia Russo, that competition to do shooting together, to have conversations and analysis together.

It’s really important to have those relationships and constant battles. I think it’s really healthy.

My main hope is Aggie Beever-Jones starts up top for England. Sarina has seemed a bit reluctant to use her but her maturity and natural finishing ability at such a young age is very impressive! To break into the richest side in the league above big names shows that. I think she has to go out of her comfort zone with selection as if she focuses too much on her favourites, it could cost her.

With Mary Earps, that is obviously a difficult one - when you have been number one, to then have to sit there as a number two.

To be an understudy takes a certain bit of character. It sounded like she wanted her in a mentor role, for support.

With [England's] keepers, if we get an injury then we are obviously caught quite short with the fact that [reserve goalkeepers] Anna Moorhouse and Khiara Keating don't have that much experience [at international level].

  5. Will Wiegman take three goalkeepers?published at 12:59 British Summer Time 5 June

    Hannah HamptonImage source, Getty Images

As Emma just mentioned, will it two goalkeepers or three for Sarina Wiegman?

Hannah Hampton is the Lionesses current number one, even before Mary Earps announced her retirement last month. The 24-year-old kept 13 clean sheets in 22 Women's Super League games during Chelsea's title-winning campaign last season to win the Golden Glove award.

Hampton has never played in a major tournament but she was part of the wider squad that lifted the trophy at Wembley three years ago.

Manchester City's Khiara Keating is yet to score her first senior England cap but the 20-year-old caught Wiegman's eye two years ago and was included to face Belgium in the Nations League in October 2023.

Uncapped Anna Moorhouse received her first senior Lionesses call-up last summer for the Euro qualifiers against the Republic of Ireland and Sweden. The 30-year-old plays for NWSL side Orlando Pride and her previous clubs include West Ham United, Arsenal and Everton.

Other key talking points surrounding Sarina Wiegman's squad selection include:

    • Whether to include youngsters Laura Blindkilde Brown or Missy Bo Kearns as midfield backup?
    • Who will fill Millie Bright’s spot in the centre of defence?
    • Can Wiegman squeeze in three goalkeepers or just take two - either Anna Moorhouse or Khiara Keating - given her number-one choice Hampton Hampton only has 13 caps?
  7. Two key decisions for Wiegman to ponderpublished at 12:52 British Summer Time 5 June

    Emma Sanders
BBC Sport women’s football news reporter

Chelsea star Lauren James has been an integral part of the England squad since announcing her arrival on the biggest stage - scoring three goals and providing three assists in the 2023 Women's World Cup.

She has since earned 27 caps and been a standout player in Chelsea's recent success, but has not played since April after suffering a hamstring injury in England's 5-0 win over Belgium.

The question is, will Sarina Wiegman risk including the 23-year-old in her squad for the Euros, and would that be a risk worth taking?

Wiegman must also decide whether to take a punt on exciting teen talent Michelle Agyemang.

The 19-year-old Brighton forward was an unused substitute in the Lionesses' 2-1 defeat in Spain on Tuesday, but scored just 41 seconds into her only senior appearance so for - against Belgium in April.

  8. Will Agyemang get the call?published at 12:47 British Summer Time 5 June

Brighton forward Michelle Agyemang, who is on loan from Arsenal, was 41 seconds in to her England debut when she scored a spectactular goal against Belgium that caught the eye of fans - and manager Sarina Wiegman.

The 19-year-old's whirlwind rise to the senior squad started with a goal for the Under-19s on a Saturday, before being called up to join Wiegman's side to replace the injured Alessia Russo the following day.

"This is the level I want to play at, week in week out, at club as well, making sure I do everything I can to get back here again and help the team get ready for the Euros as well," said Agyemang.

Wiegman called the teenager's goal "just incredible", but will she take a chance on an unknown attacking option for a major tournament?

Lauren James should be selected, she’s a rare talent who can turn a game on it's head. Mary, Fran and Millie will be missed greatly but I still feel we can genuinely contend for the trophy and I still have ultimate faith in Sarina. She is not afraid of making unpopular decisions and does them with care and respect. Not her fault that ‘we’ analyse her and the players words and statements to sell a concept of disruption and chaos.

  11. 'James vital for England'published at 12:36 British Summer Time 5 June

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Lionesses fan Beth, calling in on BBC 5 Live: "If Lauren James is fit then she is in the squad. If not, then it is unfortunate. It will be interesting to see as you can't risk it but she is vital for England."

On Maya Le Tissier: "She is still so young but has had a great season for Manchester United. I wasn't sure if she was right to take over from Katie Zelem as captain, but she has been unreal.

"As a defender she is superb. I am very hopeful for her getting into the squad, even if Sarina Wiegman hasn't given her many minutes."

  12. Wiegman's biggest headachepublished at 12:32 British Summer Time 5 June

[The biggest headache] is Lauren James in terms of fitness, will she be fit in time? Is Sarina Wiegman willing to take an 80-90% fit Lauren James?

For me, I think she’s that good that hopefully she’s close enough to being fit because I do think she should be in the team selection but, that’s obviously only for them and the Chelsea physios to know where she’s up to and her recovery.

She adds another level to this England team. She’s a cheat code, she only needs five or 10 minutes to light up the opposition, she’s special.

Sarina Wiegman must select Lauren James. England have no one like her in terms of turning a game on it's head. I think she’s worth the risk.

It’s so hard because are you going to have to wait a few games for Lauren to be fully fit? So you’re essentially only carrying 22 players into the tournament.

Then you also need to give her a few minutes to get up to speed because as much as you’re training at the Euros or any major tournament, it’s not the same. It’s not the ridiculous intensity that we know at club level because you’re almost having to taper it down.

If she is 90% and could maybe be fit for the Netherlands or the Wales game, do you take that risk?

  15. Will James be on the plane?published at 12:18 British Summer Time 5 June

    Lauren JamesImage source, Getty Images

One of the toughest calls for Sarina Wiegman is whether to roll the dice on the fitness of Chelsea forward Lauren James.

The 23-year-old has been on the sidelines since she suffered a hamstring injury during England's 5-0 Nations League win over Belgium at Ashton Gate in April.

Wiegman said this week James is on track and "ticking the boxes", adding she is "pretty positive" about the forward's progress.

Ex-England striker Ellen White says James is "special" and can produce something "quite extraordinary".

"Do you take a risk on someone that is talented, that could potentially come on for 10 or 15 minutes and do something completely special? It is a real headache for Sarina," White said.

I've just googled where the word 'knackered' originates from and there's no way I can write it on this page. Which is a shame.

Back to the England squad announcement and there's one player who most fans and pundits agree should make Sarina Wiegman's 23-player squad. But will the Dutchwoman take the gamble? ...

  17. 'Refreshing' from Bright to withdrawpublished at 12:09 British Summer Time 5 June

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Chelsea fan Emma, calling in on BBC 5 Live: "It is actually quite refreshing that Millie Bright has just come out and said she is knackered.

"It offers another opportunity for a player to be in a squad. That was Bright's best season for Chelsea and after the amount of games and international games she has played in, it is refreshing for her to say she can't give 100%.

Lionesses fan Beth, calling in on BBC 5 Live: "Fran Kirby would have given so much experience but the new generation are probably going to come in and start above her."

The issues could’ve been fixed by just floating out a story all three were injured, give Millie her privacy and the other two could’ve retired after the tournament saying about prolonging club careers. Zero damage and no attention taken away from what matters, plus would’ve stopped any of the animosity they’ve faced online.

Fran Kirby celebrating for EnglandImage source, Getty Images

It caught me off guard, both of the retirements [Kirby and Earps] were a surprise for me but when you hear that you’re not going to be in someone’s plans for the tournament… when that decision gets made up for you, you go like ‘there’s a lot of things I’ve sacrificed over a lot of time, is this something I can continue sacrificing’.

Fran has always been so kind, she’s such a lovely person. If I picked up an injury she’d be the first to text or ring and she’d always be up for silly shenanigans on camp as well.

To be honest, I think she probably didn’t get the accolades that she deserved. So I hope now she does go and get her flowers because she certainly deserves it. She always gave everything, every ounce that she had to give.

'Future is bright for this squad'published at 11:56 British Summer Time 5 June

Whilst losing Earps, Kirby and Bright is disappointing, whatever squad Sarina picks still has lots of potential. No-one's place in the squad is nailed on, and I think that's a good thing. It creates hunger and desire, and these Lionesses have belief in abundance. The future is bright for this squad. Maybe we can bring football home again.
