Defender Millie Bright, meanwhile, made herself unavailable for the Euros yesterday, saying she is unable to "give 100% mentally or physically".

The 31-year-old had also withdrawn from the Nations League squad, with the FA saying Bright was taking "an extended period of recovery".

The centre-back later cited burnout as the reason for her decision, after a season that saw her make 36 appearances in all competitions as Chelsea won the domestic treble of Women's Super League, FA Cup and League Cup.

"This is one of the hardest decisions I've ever had to make," she wrote on Instagram.

"Football has given me so much, and representing my country has always been my greatest honour. My pride and ego tells me to go but I think the team and the fans deserve more. Right now I'm not able to give 100% mentally or physically."

Attacking midfielder Fran Kirby announced her retirement from international football on Tuesday after she was informed she would not be part of England's Euro 2025 squad.

The Brighton player, who scored 19 goals in 77 caps for the Lionesses, was a key figure for England for more than a decade.

Kirby was named in Sarina Wiegman's squad for their latest Nations League games and made her final England appearance as a substitute in the 6-0 win against Portugal on 30 May.

In an exclusive interview with BBC Sport, Kirby said she was leaving the international scene with her "head held high".

"It is something I have been thinking about for over a year. I knew this was going to be my last major tournament. The plan was to retire after the Euros but after speaking to Sarina I'm not going to make the squad,” she said.

It's a big day for Sarina Wiegman who admitted this week she had a good idea of her squad, but was still deciding on her starting XI.

Lauren James' inclusion is the biggest talking point but the signs have been very positive and it would be a surprise not to see her in the squad.

She has not featured for club or country since picking up an injury in April but is such a key player and many believe it is worth the risk.

The other big call is regarding Brighton's Michelle Agyemang, who made that stunning introduction on her debut and could be a wildcard.

Confidence that James will be included is high, as for Agyemang... Who knows!

Lionesses fan Beth McCann, calling in on BBC 5 Live: "What has happened has turned what was meant to be a very exciting time for an England fan to a worrying one.

"Mary Earps was one of the most important characters in that squad in how she leads and makes her voice heard. Whether or not she is starting on the field or not, she is a massive loss for England.

"Her decision differs slightly to the other two, who had more transparency."

  7. Earps retirement disappoints Wiegmanpublished at 11:24 British Summer Time 5 June

England goalkeeper Mary Earps was the first to drop out from the England set-up after her shock retirement from international football on 27 May.

The 32-year-old was key in the Lionesses' Euro 2022 triumph but had lost her starting place to Chelsea shot-stopper Hannah Hampton.

Earps made 53 senior appearances over eight years for England, also winning the 2023 Finalissima before helping them reach the final of the 2023 Women's World Cup.

Reacting to the news, England manager Sarina Wiegman had said she was "disappointed" by the decision, having hoped Earps would play an "important role" this summer.

Speaking of her "difficult decision", Earps said it was "the right time for me to step aside and give the younger generation an opportunity to thrive".

Hampton is set to continue as England's number one with Manchester City's Khiara Keating and Orlando Pride's Anna Moorhouse as her deputies.

It will feel like the start of a new era for England, who will be without three of their stalwarts as they look to defend their title at the Euro 2025.

Goalkeeper Mary Earps, centre-back Millie Bright and attacking midfielder Fran Kirby all started for the Lionesses three years ago as they beat Germany 2-1 in the Euro final to lift their first major trophy.

But the reigning champions will be without the services of the trio for the tournament, starting in Switzerland on 2 July.

Paris St-Germain shot-stopper Earps, 32, announced a shock international retirement last week with 31-year-old Kirby following suit.

Bright, meanwhile, became the latest to miss out, after the Chelsea captain confirmed yesterday that she was making herself unavailable for selection for the tournament.
