Former England and Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has reacted to Gareth Southgate's resignation.

"Sir Alf won the trophy," he told Sky Sports. "There was debate before the game as to whether Southgate was the most successful manager. I don't agree with that, I think you've got to win the trophy and Sir Alf has already done that.

"When I look at other England managers that we look back on fondly like Terry Venables and Bobby Robson, I always wonder what things would have been like if social media was about.

"When you look at what Gareth has achieved, he's achieved more than those two who are thought of so highly. What he's achieved puts him far ahead of any England manager bar Sir Alf Ramsey."

  7. 'Reaching two finals is a fantastic achievement'published at 15:03 British Summer Time 16 July

Former Manchester United women manager Casey Stoney has also paid tribute to Gareth Southgate.

  8. Did Southgate do enough?published at 15:00 British Summer Time 16 July

    Rory Smith
Chief Soccer Correspondent for The New York Times, on BBC Radio 5 Live

Gareth Southgate is by a distance the most successful England manager of my lifetime and you can probably make a case he is the best after Sir Alf Ramsey.

But at the same time in a purely football terms with the team England put out, is two finals, a semi-final and a quarter-final enough?

Maybe not. I can see why people would think that.

  9. 'His legacy is successful' - Allardycepublished at 14:57 British Summer Time 16 July

Former England manager Sam Allardyce, the boss whom Gareth Southgate suceeded, has spoken on Southgate's resignation.

"His legacy is successful, there's no doubt about that," Allardyce told Sky.

"From when he took over and to where he's finished has been nothing but success and the success of Gareth, his backroom staff on the players has to be admired.

"I think he's handled himself absolutely fantastically well. And I think eight years is an awful long time to cope with the pressures that this job brings."

  10. 'Howe will be very high on the FA's list'published at 14:53 British Summer Time 16 July

    Alan Shearer
Former England striker speaking to BBC Sport

Eddie Howe has done an unbelievable job at Newcastle and I am pretty sure he will be contacted.

It is then up to him. Who could blame him when your country comes calling, it would be very difficult to.

He will be very high on the FA's list.

A major tournament victory won't be too long. I am pretty sure of that. We have a really good squad and they are now experienced.

Hopefully they will use that over the next two years.

  11. Jason Tindall for England?published at 14:50 British Summer Time 16 July

One of the names hotly linked with being Gareth Southgate's replacement is Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe.

You would suspect that should it be Howe, he would be keen to bring in trusted long-term assistant Jason Tindall with him to the national team role.

Especially at Newcastle, Tindall has not been shy of the limelight and has been very outgoing in his role as Howe's No.2, something that he would undoubtedly flourish in on the national stage.

  12. 'The England job is tiring' - Shearerpublished at 14:47 British Summer Time 16 July

    Alan Shearer
Former England striker speaking to BBC Sport

It is tiring. Imagine the stress and pressure you are under as an individual, that might not be nice for Gareth Southgate's family or friends.

He has also shielded the players at every opportunity which takes its toll. Hopefully he will have some time out and rest before hopefully we see him again somewhere.

Before he took over it wasn't quite the case that players wanted to play for their country.

Why not follow the Spain model? De La Fuente has won the U19s and 21s. Steve Cooper has won the 17s World Cup (5-2, after 0-2 at half-time) and Lee Carsley won the U21s Euros. Surely two good candidates?

    Nigel

Thank you Gareth but time for new blood. Would like to see the 21st century equivalent of Clough and Taylor! Charismatic, wily, over achievers!

  15. 'Southgate should be applauded for everything he has done'published at 14:33 British Summer Time 16 July

    Alan Shearer
Former England striker speaking to BBC Sport

I wasn't surprised. Maybe he made his mind up before the tournament, if England were to go on and win it.

What I do know is that he should be applauded for everything that he has done. He has taken England from rock bottom after that Iceland result in 2016 to a semi-final and finals.

We said during this Euros they might not have played as well as they could have, but the atmosphere he has created helped them through to another final.

In the bigger picture, Gareth should be applauded for everything he has done with England. The expectation is now you have to get to finals and win trophies.

    Gareth SouthgateImage source, Getty Images

Former England and Manchester United player Gary Neville has reacted after Gareth Southgate's resignation as England manager.

"He has had an amazing eight years and exceeded all expectations of every single England fan," he told Sky Sports. "He deserves to call it a day on his own terms, and he has done that. He knows England better than anybody. It was the right moment for him, he has done an outstanding job.

“He has achieved incredible things on the pitch, but he has also achieved incredible things off the pitch. How difficult it is to manage the politics of England, the media, the club-versus-country rivalries which existed, he has removed a lot of those barriers. He has handled penalties better than anybody, reduced the fear, so he has done an incredible job, but it will have taken a toll on him."

Very sad to see Southgate go. At the end of the day, he took us to two finals. If we were honest, it wouldn't have mattered whether we had changed tactics on Sunday night or not. Spain were just the better team. It's one of those things. Let's be positive and look ahead to the World Cup - we have some incredible young talent at the moment to nurture who will only improve in the coming years. Good luck to our next manager and I hope we all get behind him.
