I have nothing but respect for what Southgate has done for England (and I don't mind if he stays) so it's only from a place of cold reason that I think if he wants to go, he needs to go now. In the autumn England are in a second-tier Nations League group with lower ranked sides, which is a perfect opportunity for the new manager to get a feel for the squad before the serious business of World Cup qualifying begins. Former Everton and England midfielder on The Monday Night Club

We’ll look back and say ‘what a good stretch that was’. You’ll forget the performances. We’ll just remember in 20 years or so we got to the latter stages of four tournaments on the run and we had those moments, we had those house parties, we had those moments with families watching games. We might never have a stretch like this again and it’s something we should actually be proud of.

  3. Club football next for Southgate?published at 09:48 British Summer Time 16 July

    Nedum Onuoha
Former Manchester City defender on The Monday Night Club

I think Gareth Southgate will be leaving. He is one of the longest serving managers in national team competition currently and the stuff that he has done in the grand scheme of England history has been impressive.

There are obviously little bits in it that people don’t like but also if he was to leave today, you look at that team and it’s a really young exciting team potentially for someone to take.

He will look at it and think he has done a good job. He will probably be ready and young enough to go into club football. I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s his next move.

England now require a manager who is a proven trophy winner to get us over the line in major tournaments. For me we should be approaching Thomas Tuchel who is available.

    Leon Osman
Former Everton and England midfielder on The Monday Night Club

Yes I do [think Gareth Southgate will stay as England manager]. I want him to. I know it’s been frustrating and I know we have had our moments where we all think we should have done this differently. But he is the man in charge, he is the man who despite performances in this particular tournament, we’ve been to two finals. So yes…force him to keep the job.

  6. 'Anything Guardiola touches he turns to gold'published at 09:35 British Summer Time 16 July

    BBC Radio 5 Live

England fan Steve: "Gareth Southgate should really know what system he wants to play.

"Someone like Pep Guardiola, who has systems in place and can adapt in any kind of situation, then that is our game.

"That is who we need. Anything he touches he turns to gold. I am not even a Manchester City fan, I support Tottenham.

"Mauricio Pochettino did exactly what Gareth Southgate did and played Harry Kane when he wasn't fit."

  7. A Shakespearean tragedypublished at 09:25 British Summer Time 16 July

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Sports psychologist Michael Caulfield, speaking to The Monday Night Club about the toll the England job will have had on Gareth Southgate: "If there is a line that stands out for me from Gareth at Euro 2024 it was ‘he wanted it so badly it hurt’.

"He wanted to make people happy. He wanted us to have a celebration, for us to be in Trafalgar Square.

"He was a great fan of Bobby Robson and Terry Venables. He saw the way they were treated and how they handled themselves with so much incredible dignity. Even last night when Gareth looked absolutely crushed, he still wanted to handle himself with real dignity.

"He kept using the word ‘for the country’. It matters to us, it matters to him and it matters to the country. It sounds like a Shakespearean tragedy but that’s what it really is in many ways."

  8. Who is in the frame if Southgate goes?published at 09:19 British Summer Time 16 July

    Adam Crafton
Reporter for The Athletic, speaking on The Monday Night Club

I’d imagine there would be conversation with Mauricio Pochettino. He has got a very good record of developing young English players at various clubs. I would imagine the FA will look within at people like Lee Carsley, who is doing the England U21 job. Graham Potter perhaps, Michael Carrick, Eddie Howe if you are looking at an English appointment.

Thomas Tuchel would be a very different kind of hire. At Copa America I have been seeing Marcelo Bielsa's Uruguay – that would be like lighting a fuse on English football and seeing what on earth happens because that would be a lot of fun. It would be crazy.

If they replaced Southgate I can imagine it leading to a couple of subpar tournaments with the fans wanting Southgate to graciously return. Let’s not go through more years of pain and keep the momentum going!

"Enjoy them as you don't win many."

That is what you hear a lot of former players saying when advising young players after winning a major trophy.

Dani Carvajal may have won the Champions League six times, but the 32-year-old clearly enjoyed finally winning one of the big ones with Spain.

Carvajal also won La Liga and scored a header in the Champions League final victory over Borussia Dortmund.

He is probably due a proper party....

With the greatest respect to Gareth, I think his time is up. What England needs is a serial cup winner. Emery at Villa is my choice. Gareth could then truly go home to the Villa.

Alvaro Morata captained Spain to a record fourth Euros on Sunday.

Morata only scored one goal at Euro 2024, in the opener against Croatia, but his tireless work rate was vital in helping supply his side's dangerous young exciting wingers.

With 80 caps and 36 goals, he sits fourth in Spain's all-time leading scorers - only two goals behind Fernando Torres in third.

The 31-year-old may have struggled to hit big numbers at some of Europe's best sides in the club game, but there is no doubt he will go down as one of Spain's best ever now.

Eddie Howe plays a high energy, high press, 4-3-3 attacking formation. Imagine what he could do with that squad of talent ! It was exactly what England needed ...

    Russ, Durham

I honestly think Howe would be great for England. In the longer term he seems to fade a bit at club level but I regard him as being a morale boosting coach who brings an energetic, attack focussed style of play. Exactly what England have been lacking and well suited for tournament football.

    Spain 2-1 England

Spain's golden generation won three major tournaments in a row from 2008-2012.

Back-to-back Euros and a World Cup is a high bar to match, but a message of "this is only the beginning" on Spain's bus shows they are going to give it a go at matching.

A young exciting side with young player of the tournament Lamine Yamal, who only turned 17, is it an outrageous suggestion?

    Got to rate the confidence.

I would like to see Gareth Southgate replaced by... Gareth Southgate version 2.0. He is exactly what England need. He has all the traits of Southgate 1.0 but has attacking front foot tactical nous. He will need the right coaching set up around him and will need the will and desire to turn his own managerial weaknesses into strengths. I'm bracing myself for a thumbs down backlash.
