Ollie Watkins' winning goal was timed at 89:59 - the latest winning goal scored in a European Championship or World Cup semi-final, excluding extra time.

It wasn't quite the last kick of the game, given there were five minutes of stoppage time played, but still, what a time to score.

  3. From Weston-super-Mare to Euro 2024 final - Watkins' 'unbelievable' momentpublished at 09:10 British Summer Time 11 July

    Netherlands 1-2 England

"I've been waiting for that moment for weeks," said Ollie Watkins afterwards - and boy did he take it.

With the clock about to hit 90:00 in England's Euro 2024 semi-final against the Netherlands, with the score at 1-1 in Dortmund, the ball fell to the striker from Devon, who was still playing in the English Football League just over four years ago at the age of 24.

The Aston Villa striker turned Stefan de Vrij and hammered a shot into the bottom corner for one of the most important England goals ever scored.

Rewind nine years and he had just finished a loan spell at non-league Weston-super-Mare from League Two Exeter City.

Asked after his Dortmund heroics whether he could have imagined this at the time, he said: "You can dream but I am a realist. I was just focused on getting back into the first team at Exeter.

"I didn't dream about that to be honest. I can't lie and say I did. Scoring for England is amazing but I didn't think I'd do it in a tournament like that."

Ollie Watkins admitted he had been a "little bit frustrated" in being a substitute for most of the tournament, but says he "didn't want to get off the pitch" after scoring the memorable winner.

Watkins scored 19 goals for Aston Villa last season but had been limited to just 20 minutes against Denmark before last night's match.

At the key moment, [Gareth Southgate] made inspired changes. He could have brought [Ivan] Toney on, but he brought Ollie Watkins on.

He looked at that space, the Dutch centre-halves Virgil van Dijk and [Stefan] de Vrij were getting very tight, but there was space in behind, and Watkins just loves that.

There is a resilience about the England team, collectively and individually. They’ve built up relationships playing with each other, winning trophies with each other. They are a band of brothers.

Watkins scores late goal for England

We're on holiday on the Isle of Anglesey.....the TV reception was awful, it was like an '80s pop video special effect, a kaleidoscope of coloured squares and crackling sounds. Just at Watkins came in to the penalty area the screen and sound broke up again into an explosion of jumbled colours but in the top left corner we saw the word GOAL. It was enough. We finally got to see the goal this morning.

There were more than 70 minutes to play after Harry Kane converted his penalty to equalise for England, and the Netherlands were still very much in the game during the second half.

So many would argue that the decisive moment was Ollie Watkins' last-gasp winner... which is why he's all over today's back pages.

Netherlands forward Cody Gakpo: "I think second half we played better and in the last 10 minutes of the game we were more dominant. [It is a] tough one to take, a tough game.

"When you get the penalty and it goes in you get more confidence. That was a decisive moment as well. It is what it is. It is a part of football and unfortunately we are the ones that lost today."

    Chris Sutton
Former Celtic striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

I am absolutely delighted for Gareth Southgate. He’s had a tough time. It wasn’t that long ago that the England fans were chucking beer cups at him [after the 0-0 draw with Slovenia].

Spain have been the best team in the tournament. England are going to have to raise their game again. They’re a well balanced team - they’re slick in the midfield and they’re strong at the back.

  14. 'The way they've grown and moulded as a group has been absolutely fantastic'published at 08:24 British Summer Time 11 July

    Netherlands 1-2 England

    England

England manger Gareth Southgate brought on Cole Palmer and Ollie Watkins with nine minutes remaining.

Then in the final minute or normal time, Palmer played the ball in to Watkins, who turned and fired just inside the far post to spark jubilation among the England players, staff and fans.

"The fact that Ollie comes on and produces the moment he does from Cole's pass, it epitomises what they've got," said Southgate.

"Their dedication to each other, the way they've grown and moulded as a group, it's been absolutely fantastic. All of the players have been ready to come in to the games and it's brilliant for them that so many have had these moments that have been so important for the team."

England's hero Ollie Watkins says he was confident he could "make a difference" for the Three Lions off the bench against the Netherlands and boy did he.

Watkins powered home a late stunner to send England through to Sunday's Euro 2024 final against Spain.

"I didn't dream about that, to be honest," said the Aston Villa striker. "Scoring for England is amazing but I didn't think I'd do it in a tournament like this.

"When I was on the bench I said to [substitute goalkeeper] Dean Henderson, 'I can make a difference today and need to get on'. I took my chance, scored it and now we are in the final - one last game."

  17. 'I think we learned from previous games throughout this tournament'published at 08:06 British Summer Time 11 July

    Netherlands 1-2 England

    Izzy Christiansen
Former England midfielder on the Football Daily podcast

One of the key moments in the match was Memphis Depay going off injured [on 35 minutes] and it forced the Dutch to change their shape a little bit.

They obviously addressed that at half-time, brought on [Wout] Weghorst, went into a 4-4-2 and then just dropped off.

Previous teams in this tournament have had success playing 4-4-2 against England, completely slowing down England’s rhythm. [They've] taken the zip out of our passing and frustrated us.

But we responded to that and I think we learned from previous games throughout this tournament. All we needed was a moment and that happened because of the substitutions and the impact that they made.

More from Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk on the penalty decision that went against the Netherlands, which Harry Kane converted to bring England level: "So many decisions didn't go our way but I don't want to talk about the referee today. Maybe he should come here and speak about it too."

Do you want to watch the penalty incident back? "No, I don't want to see it. Why should I see it? He gave it and we lost the game. That is the reality and it is very tough."

  19. 'I am disappointed that we couldn't achieve our dream'published at 07:55 British Summer Time 11 July

    Netherlands 1-2 England

Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk: "I'm disappointed. I think the penalty moment is a big moment. I think England got some confidence from it. In the second half it felt like we could have made it 2-1 and to concede in added time is tough.

"I think our supporters in general are very supportive and they need to back us in difficult moments. Hopefully we can keep seeing them everywhere we go."

On the final between England and Spain: "I don't think I should comment on that. I am disappointed that we couldn't achieve our dreams today and now I need a good break because it has been a very long season. It has been demanding and tonight was demanding too."

  20. 'You play football for the physical part' - Dumfries says penalty decision is 'tough to take'published at 07:51 British Summer Time 11 July

    Netherlands 1-2 England

Netherlands defender Denzel Dumfries, who conceded the penalty in the first half of the Euro 2024 semi-final against England, on whether VAR is working correctly: "Most of the time, yes, but these situations are difficult. You play football because of the physical part of the game.

"It is not smart of me but you do everything to keep the ball out of the goal. We touch each other but it is difficult for me to say now. The decision was made and I have to accept it and move on."

On the Dutch fans: "They were amazing from the first game until the last game. We felt one with the country and the fans, and it was amazing. We wanted to give them more but we have to accept it.

"It's now difficult to take but we fought for each other. We did everything and that is something that we can take with us to next tournaments. We have to keep our heads high and focus on what's coming next."
