Gateshead responded well to their opening-day drubbing by Southend as they inflicted a 2-0 National League defeat on Eastleigh at the Silverlake Stadium.

Paul McCallum volleyed over for Eastleigh before seeing his header parried and Gateshead – who lost 3-0 last weekend – took advantage as summer signing Dom Telford struck in the 19th minute, with Kain Adom doubling their lead seven minutes later.

Temi Eweka nodded inches wide as the Spitfires pushed to halve the deficit in the second half and, in the 73rd minute, Luis Fernandez agonisingly saw his headed attempt cleared off the line.

There was further disappointment when Eweka and Jake Taylor found the back of the net only for the offside flag to shoot up on both occasions, confirming back-to-back losses for Eastleigh.
