  2. Is Grealish worth a punt?published at 16:56 British Summer Time 15 August

Joe from Cranbrook, Devon: Is Jack Grealish a viable option now he is at Everton?

Pras: I am really excited to see an "unshackled" Grealish again. Think he could thrive at Everton who are in a real need for a creator like him. However, I think starting off with Grealish is risky given he only just joined the team, and perhaps he takes a game or two to get regular starts.

  3. Overpriced and underpriced playerspublished at 16:52 British Summer Time 15 August

Neil: Who do you think is most over-priced and who do you think is most under-priced?

Pras: Tough to say this without looking very stupid in a few weeks. But you've put me on the spot so I will go with Saka being overpriced, especially if he loses penalties to Gyokeres. And underpriced could be Reijnders who at 5.5m could be a real steal especially if he gets minutes in that Gundogan type role at City.

Andrew from Bristol: I tend to avoid players who are new to the PL. They often take some time to adjust, and are not guaranteed minutes in the early games. Are there any you feel you should include?

Pras: I think there are always two sides to it. For every Werner and Antony there is a Marmoush, Salah or Gakpo who hit the ground running very nicely. We tend to only remember the flops. This year, I think Werner, Reijnders, Ekitike and Gyokeres all have a great chance of delivering. Having said that, I think Werner and Reijnders have the best chance of immediate starts and returns.

  5. Is long-term planning in FPL overrated?published at 16:45 British Summer Time 15 August

    FPL Q&A

    Pras
FPL veteran with eight top-25k finishes and co-host of The FPL Wire podcast

Kelvin from Warwickshire: Do you think looking at fixtures and planning your team around them is overrated since anything can happen and maybe you're better off just using players who over 10-15 games are consistent rather than trying to catch a big return in a home game against the newly promoted clubs ?

Pras: I agree with the sentiment that football is an unpredictable sport where anything can happen, but I disagree that this doesn't mean we don't plan. Having a transfer path in mind that captures the best captaincy picks and good fixture blocks increases the chances of success. Afterall, Liverpool are always more likely to score more goals against Sunderland than Arsenal. Key word being likely. Planning for these things over a long period, in my experience, does lead to better results and lowers the chances of needing hits.

  6. Wirtz or Bruno?published at 16:42 British Summer Time 15 August

    FPL Q&A

    Bruno FernandesImage source, Getty Images

Jack from Surrey: Decisions to be made - Wirtz or Bruno for my FPL team?

Pras: I think the recent changes in FPL have really benefitted Bruno. Possibly the only player in the game that has penalties, creates chances and also collects defensive contribution points. For me he is a long term glue pick. However, Wirtz also looks really central and should get a lot of goals and assists. I currently have both, so it's hard for me to say which is better. If pushed, I'll go Wirtz as he plays for the better team and attack.

  7. Pras' top tips for newcomerspublished at 16:38 British Summer Time 15 August

    FPL Q&A

    Pras
FPL veteran with eight top-25k finishes and co-host of The FPL Wire podcast

Rachel from Surrey: This is my first year playing FPL, so I do not really have a clear strategy yet. Can Pras advise me on something basic?

Pras: Basic rules starting the game for me are:

    1. Pick players who's starts are secure - there is more rotation these days than we think.

    2. Pick players that are talismans for their team i.e. involved in a large % of goals.

    3. Pay attention to players to take set pieces and penalties - these are often "free points" you get every now and then and they really make a difference.

  8. Defences could win titlespublished at 16:35 British Summer Time 15 August

    Moises CaicedoImage source, Getty Images

Outfield players will now earn bonus points based on the number of defensive actions they make in one match.

For defenders, clearances, blocks, interceptions and tackles all count as defensive involvements.

For midfielders and forwards, clearances, blocks, interceptions, tackles and ball recoveries are classified as such.

For every 10 defensive actions, a defensive player makes in a single match, they will receive two bonus points. For midfielders and forwards, two points are awarded for every 12 actions made.

Had this been in play for the 2024-25 season, Everton's James Tarkowski would have been the top-scoring player for defensive involvements. He would have earned 44 bonus points - four more than any other player.

Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo would have been the best-performing midfielder in this metric with 42 bonus points - six more than any other player.

Feedback welcome, but bear in mind I was the champion of my old school-mates' league in the 2015-16 season after I picked Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy from the start and rode the Leicester train to victory.

Nearly a decade later, and I am still waiting for a second title. Turns out being a professional sports journalist does not automatically make you an FPL genius.

  10. No Haaland for Heisenbergpublished at 16:26 British Summer Time 15 August

    FPL Heisenberg
Fantasy Premier League expert with seven top-30k finishes

Going without Erling Haaland isn't for the faint-hearted, but it allows me to have a much better balanced squad. It also allows me to go with the other big hitters - Mo Salah, Cole Palmer, Bruno Fernandes and Ollie Watkins.

Defensively I've gone for a mix of attacking threat and those who are good for defensive contributions. Pedro Porro and Nikola Milenkovic will play most Gameweeks. I'll rotate Joachim Andersen and Patrick Dorgu as their fixtures pair up nicely.

  11. Double Forest defence, double Liverpool and Chelsea attackpublished at 16:23 British Summer Time 15 August

    Gianni Buttice
FPL expert and eight-time top-50k finisher

With the addition of defensive contribution points this season, we have more value in defence this year. Daniel Munoz offers huge open play upside whiet I expect Pedro Porro to be a creative outlet for Spurs. Nottingham Forest have kept five clean sheets pre season and I expect them to start strong and be solid defensively yet again.

In midfield there are plenty of good cheap options and I think Tijjani Reijnders and Kieran Dewsbury-Hall are two of the stand out options who could clock good attacking output and be important cogs for their teams. The trio of Florian Wirtz, Mo Salah and Cole Palmer have been a set and forget in all my drafts.

Up front Ollie Watkins has five goals pre-season and Joao Pedro has five goals from 250 minutes in a Chelsea shirt so far averaging a goal every 50 minutes across his three Club World Cup games and two friendlies.

  12. Pras' 'Big five' attackpublished at 16:20 British Summer Time 15 August

    Pras
FPL veteran with eight top-25k finishes and co-host of The FPL Wire podcast

I am going with the "big five" of Salah, Palmer, Bruno, Watkins and Wirtz. I think they all carry huge potential for points and in the case of the first two, a nice captaincy rotation as well. Watkins allows me to react to transfer updates and get Ekitike in GW4 ahead of Burnley if he becomes viable, otherwise he can also become Gyokeres in GW7.

In defence, I have gone for Sanchez for a bit of Chelsea defence cover. Double Spurs defence as they have a great fixture in GW1, and rotate nicely in GW2 with Anderson and Esteve, who are both great for defensive contribution points playing for solid defences.

    FPL Q&A

Erling Haaland and Mohamed SalahImage source, Getty Images

Big Dave from Canterbury: Should I have Haaland and Salah or is that just madness?!

Pras: This is where captaincy and budget planning comes into it. Both could (actually will) be great picks, but ultimately spending 28.5% of your budget on 2 players when you can only captain one seems too much. Especially since other great picks like Palmer, Saka, Wirtz, Watkins can also do well for a slightly lower price and give much more depth and robustness to the squad.

  15. The big question: Haaland or Salah?published at 16:10 British Summer Time 15 August

    FPL Q&A

    Pras
FPL veteran with eight top-25k finishes and co-host of The FPL Wire podcast

Steve from Glasgow: I can only afford either or Haaland or Salah, which one should I pick?

Pras: This is a very loaded question! What I will advise is to think about captaincy. That's why we pick the big hitters. For example, I am picking Salah and Palmer because I plan to captain the former in GW1, GW4 and GW5, and the latter in GW2 and GW3. I expect both to do well, so its really about these captaincy decisions.

  16. Is Ait-Nouri a good Gvardiol replacement?published at 16:05 British Summer Time 15 August

    FPL Q&A

    Ait NouriImage source, Getty Images

Jack from Croydon: With the news that Gvardiol won't play against Wolves - is Ait-Nouri now more of an option?

Pras: At the back end of last season, Gvardiol was already being played more as a left sided center back, so this doesn't change things too much. But marginally yes, this improves Ait Nouri's chances of a start. You could also argue though that Gvardiol's absence also makes the City defence slightly weaker. I like the Ait Nouri pick regardless.

  20. How to win at FPL - Pras' tipspublished at 15:48 British Summer Time 15 August

    Pras
FPL veteran with eight top-25k finishes and co-host of The FPL Wire podcast

    • A good FPL manager plays the game like chess. It isn't about who to pick this week or even next, a good manager looks at blocks of fixtures and targets players with good medium-term fixture runs. Doing so avoids knee-jerking on moves, especially for players that only have one good fixture and then a not-so-great run. Have a plan and stick to it as much as possible.
    • Sometimes, counter-intuitively, FPL is about picking the reliable players over flair players. An example I used to use was even though Riyad Mahrez looked amazing on the eye, a player like Bruno Fernandes was always a far superior FPL pick, simply because he was nailed on to play 90 minutes, take free-kicks and penalties. These points add up and make these picks more fixture-proof since a free-kick goal or penalty is not as dependant on the difficulty of the opponent. When stuck between two players, always pick the guy taking penalties or set-pieces.
    • FPL is a game of patience, but football is a very unpredictable sport. This is a recipe for a lot of regret. You pick Bukayo Saka as your captain and he misses a penalty. This is an example of good decision, bad outcome. Managers must understand there is an element of luck in the game but making good decisions over the long-term generally leads to good outcomes. Trust the process.
