I could have lost my vision - Roebuck on stroke

Roebuck was not allowed to train for 12 weeks and was left to pick up the pieces, trying to figure out what had caused the stroke and constantly fearing it would happen again.

"I wouldn't walk my dog for like six weeks. I wouldn't leave the house. I was scared to do anything on my own. And that was never me, I was always super independent. My mum and dad were doing shifts of living with me in my one-bedroom flat in Manchester."

She underwent numerous tests in order to find out the cause of what had happened and eventually a tiny hole in her heart was discovered.

"[It] sounds crazy, but I was grateful that I had a hole in my heart because I'd found my reason and I knew that it could be closed and I could move on. I was almost excited that I was going in for heart surgery."

As England and Barcelona goalkeeper Ellie Roebuck sips her flat white in the Spanish sunshine outside her favourite coffee shop, she looks like a player who has the world at her feet.

But this is a very different picture from 12 months ago.

Last February she was told that, at the age of 24, she had suffered a stroke and was left fearing she would never play football again.

"I'm lucky because I should have lost my vision," she tells BBC Sport. "I should have lost my peripheral vision for sure. The majority of people that suffer a stroke [like mine] do that. So, I probably should have been blind, which is quite a miracle that that didn't happen."

  4. Buffon's son, 17, receives first international call-uppublished at 09:25 Greenwich Mean Time 19 February

Former Italy international Gianluigi Buffon may have retired from playing at the age of 45 in 2023, but his name remains in the game.

His son Louis, 17, was recently named on the bench for the first time for Serie B side Pisa and the young winger been called up to Czech Republic's under-18s ahead of games against England and France.

Louis is eligible to play for the Czech Republic as his mother is from there.

One wonders if Gianluigi, who was capped a record 176 times by Italy, will put on a Czech Republic top for those upcoming games...

I find the criticism of Lookman utterly unbelievable. The guy scored a hat-trick in the Europa League final last season. He should look for a new club. A club where he is shown the respect he deserves. Gasperini is an embarrassment to football management with those comments.

  7. Toloi's total head losspublished at 09:10 Greenwich Mean Time 19 February

Atalanta 1-3 Club Brugge (Agg: 2-5)

    Atalanta

It was a very bad night all round for Atalanta, as captain Rafael Toloi thoroughly embarrassed himself in being sent off late on against Club Brugge.

Toloi was shown a red card in the 87th minute for pushing over Maxim de Cuyper when the Belgian defender prevented him taking a quick throw-in.

The Brazilian had attempted to throw the ball at de Cuyper, but slipped over and skewed his throw in doing to totally miss his target. He then barged de Cuyper, was sent off and had to be dragged away by team mates.

    All very unseemly.

What makes Gian Piero Gasperini's comments seem even harsher is Ademola Lookman's penalty record in an Atalanta shirt.

Prior to last night's Champions League exit, Ademola Lookman had a perfect penalty record for the Bergamo side, with four penalties scored out of four.

Lookman's record for Atalanta is now four out of five and in his professional career, four out of six when you include his failed panenka attempt for Fulham against West Ham.

  9. 'One of the worst penalty takers I have ever seen'published at 09:00 Greenwich Mean Time 19 February

Atalanta 1-3 Club Brugge (Agg: 2-5)

    Atalanta

Speaking of that missed penalty, Ademola Lookman was on the end of some fairly remarkable criticism by his own manager last night.

"Lookman was not supposed to take that penalty, he is one of the worst penalty takers I've ever seen," Atalanta boss Gian Piero Gasperini said.

"He has a frankly terrible record even in training, he converts very few of them. [Mateo] Retegui and [Charles] De Ketelaere were there, but Lookman in a moment of enthusiasm after scoring decided to take the ball and that was a gesture I did not appreciate at all."

Perhaps Gasperini saw Lookman's missed panenka in the 98th minute of Fulham's 1-0 loss to West Ham in 2020. Very much worth seeking that out, it's up there with the worst ever penalty misses.

Still, given Lookman's hat-trick in the Europa League final last season and, importantly, the fact he is an Atalanta player, the criticism seems very harsh.

  10. Elsewhere in the Champions Leaguepublished at 08:56 Greenwich Mean Time 19 February

    Champions League

Aston Villa and Liverpool may face each other tonight in the Premier League, but both had an interest last night as potential opponents in the Champions League were revealed.

Club Brugge will face Villa or Lille in the round of 16 after a stunning 3-1 win away to Atalanta sealed their progression 5-2 on aggregate.

Brugge, who had not won a European match in Italy since October 2003, scored three times in the first half in Bergamo.

A shaken Atalanta pulled one back seconds after half-time through Ademola Lookman, but he also missed a second half penalty.

Liverpool meanwhile could face Benfica, who drew 3-3 at home to Monaco to secure a 4-3 aggregate win.

Orkun Kokcu flicked Alvaro Fernandez's pin-point cross past visiting goalkeeper Radoslaw Majecki in the 84th minute to settle a topsy-turvy tie in Lisbon.

Benfica will play Liverpool or Barcelona next - that will be determined by a draw on Friday.

  11. Conceicao rues mistakes as Milan knocked outpublished at 08:52 Greenwich Mean Time 19 February

FT: AC Milan 1-1 Feyenoord (Agg: 1-2)

    AC Milan

While Bayern narrowly escaped Champions League humiliation last night, another European giant did suffer a surprise elimination.

AC Milan crashed out of the Champions League after being held to a draw by Feyenoord in the second leg of their knockout play-off at San Siro Stadium.

The Italians wiped out a 1-0 deficit in last week's first leg after just 36 seconds as Santiago Gimenez netted against his former club with the fastest goal in this season's Champions League.

But Milan full-back Theo Hernandez was sent off in the 51st minute for two yellow cards and Feyenoord substitute Julian Carranza headed in the decisive 73rd-minute goal to seal a 2-1 aggregate success.

The last-16 draw, to be held on Friday, will decide whether the Dutch club face Inter Milan or Arsenal next month.

Milan boss Sergio Conceicao said: "It's a big defeat for me and I made many mistakes.

"I am responsible for this defeat. We should have been better on a mental level. This elimination is down to me, not Theo or anyone else. I'm the one who's responsible - Theo has given a lot to Milan."

  12. 'I think Kane still has problems with his jaw'published at 08:47 Greenwich Mean Time 19 February

Celtic 1-1 Bayern Munich (Agg: 3-2)

    Christian Falk
Bild journalist on BBC Football Daily podcast

Yes [Harry Kane's substitution was because of previous facial injury]. He didn't train the day before. I think he still has problems with his jaw. Normally they don't pull him off in such important matches.

He had a big chance in the first half and they don't have a striker behind him so we have to see how he feels for the next matches.

    Bayern 1-1 Celtic (Agg: 3-2)

    Bayern Munich

Bayern may have progressed last night, but there is concern for them and England over the fitness of striker Harry Kane.

Kane was subbed at half time against Celtic, and faces a scan on his calf following an issue picked up in that match.

It adds to ankle and jaw injuries Kane has been suffering from recently. England manager Thomas Tuchel, who has his first game in charge in around a month's time, will be looking on nervously.

Brendan Rogers. Did wonders at Leicester. Sacked for one poor season. How did that work out for Leicester? Never go back they say. He went back. Celtic are better for it. Not sure why he has so many detractors.

Bayern Munich 1-1 Celtic (Agg: 3-2)

    Chris Sutton
Former Celtic striker on 5 Live

Going into the game last night, I didn’t give Celtic much of a chance against Bayern Munich with the strength in depth they have in the team. So to actually play with the composure they did was pretty sensational. I sensed in the first game there was a little bit of fear from Celtic in the first half and they ended up going 2-0 down early in the second half at Celtic Park.

Then it's a situation where they decided they had to actually go out and play now because they had nothing to lose. Maybe they got confidence from that and took it into last night's game. They played with real boldness, bravery, and balance. The players can be immensely proud of their performance. To go to Germany and outplay Bayern Munich, that’s what they did. That’s a feather in Brendan Rogers' and the players' caps.

Well done to Celtic but let's not get carried away. They had to be at the top of their game to get a draw against a Bayern team who were not at their best. And it was only Schmeichel that prevented a routine Bayern win. An occasional good performance in a losing cause doesn't change the fundamental issue of a weak league with one dominant team.

Normally away from home against a big club, you don't take any chances, you are compact and hard to breakdown and you try to play on the counter-attack. But Celtic, not only did they do that but when they did get the ball they took chances.

It was almost beyond a perfect performance, it was better than a perfect performance. They were just so close.

It was cruel. I thought Celtic performed superbly. Sometimes in sport you don’t get what you deserve. The way Celtic set out last night and the balance that they played with. They created the better chances and maybe they were slightly tired in the last 15 minutes.

They almost got Bayern Munich to extra time and Celtic could have had their moment but they can bow out of the tournament with their heads firmly held high. I thought they really did well this season in the Champions League. That was always going to be the barometer of where this Celtic team under Brenden Rogers were measured.

Celtic did brilliantly last night and were a credit to Scottish football. Players like Maeda and Carter-Vickers will ultimately leave one day for more money but I hope some English pundits start to take us a bit more seriously in Europe.

  20. 'Schmeichel was on it tonight'published at 08:08 Greenwich Mean Time 19 February

    Bayern 1-1 Celtic (Agg: 3-2)

    Pat Nevin
Former Scotland winger on BBC Football Daily

He [Kasper Schmeichel] was flawless with the saves tonight. He came out and caught a few crosses but it was the saves that caught your eye.

A lot of them were coming straight to them but they weren't bouncing off, he was really professional. They were coming at pace sometimes. There were a couple of decent ones, coming in from the side and another that took a deflection. He was on it tonight.

When you look at the goal he has made a good save and he has done nothing wrong there at all. Even the clearance from the goal, it is the right thing. But you don't know a player is coming behind you and it deflects into the net.
