Newcastle's improvement under Eddie Howe skyrocketed after his arrival in 2021 and in his first full season, he led them to a fourth-place finish and a return to the Champions League.

He has been helped by the backing of the club's owners, however, who have supported him significantly since their takeover just prior to his appointment.

The Magpies have spent £380m since Howe's first transfer window in January 2022 and plenty of big names have arrived through the door.

A club record £63m was spent on Swedish striker Alexander Isak from La Liga side Real Sociedad, while £55m and £45m was spent to bring the likes of Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon to St James' Park.

The most recent summer transfer window is the quietest the club have had since Howe's arrival due to PSR restrictions and certain players such as Elliott Anderson and Yankuba Minteh were forced to leave to balance the books.

  11. 'They’re never going to sign Brighton’s Dan Burn' - Burn's father's emotional letterpublished at 11:17 Greenwich Mean Time

Newcastle United's Dan Burn received an emotional letter from his father in 2023 ahead of their Carabao Cup final against Manchester United.

The letter is penned by an emotional but a proud father who writes about Burn's first ever time at Wembley in 2000 and his rise to success from Yeovil Town to Newcastle United.

Burn's father also writes about the time when The Magpies came under new ownership in 2021 and the defender thought his chance to play for the Geordies came to an end. But Newcastle went after the newly-named England international and Burn realised his childhood dream come true.

Whilst the cup final in 2023 ended in bitter disappointment, Burn and Newcastle returned to Wembley two years later and beat Liverpool with the towering defender opening the scoring and securing the Man Of The Match award as well.

The letter was produced as part of the campaign by The Athletic in 2023 and was widely circulated in social media at the time.

  15. 'Clean bill of FFP health' will allow summer spendingpublished at 11:01 Greenwich Mean Time

    Liverpool 1-2 Newcastle

Isacc Hayden on Newcastle being an attractive club for players: "I think Bruno [Guimaraes] proved that when he came from Lyon. We were in a relegation battle and he completely transformed how we played, and pushed us up the table. I think it's difficult with Financial Fair Play, it's been heavily documented with the club and the situation surrounding that but I think that the club are clearing it up.

"Unfortunately, that had to sell [Elliott] Anderson and [Yankuba] Mintah last summer but this summer with a clean bill of FFP health, they can make some new singings and freshen the group up a bit. They can push on, and there is no reason why we can't be in the same bracket of as an Arsenal or Chelsea."

    Stephen Warnock
Former Aston Villa defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

I think if you're an onlooking player who's potentially looking for a new club in the summer and you look at this fan base, you look at the manager and the style of play and the quality of players in the squad, you cannot help but be drawn to it. And that is a magnificent statement from Newcastle to move themselves forward now.
