As a supporter of LFC since 1963 I have seen some good and bad games, but that game as a final by Liverpool was one of the worst. They just never turned up, there was no cohesion or plan whatsoever. They have to look at themselves and stop sulking after the loss to PSG in the Champions League. They now have to concentrate on the Premier League otherwise they could end up not finishing top. But give Newcastle their due they totally deserved to win.

Newcastle were deserved winners against Liverpool, with former Reds defender Jamie Carragher telling Sky Sports how shocked he was by the manner of their defeat.

It came hot on the heels of an energy-sapping and emotionally-charged loss on penalties to Paris St-Germain in the Champions League last 16.

"Newcastle didn't just win today, they battered Liverpool," said Carragher.

"They have wiped the floor with them today.

"No matter what happens next with Newcastle, they will always be remembered for this."

  3. I spy Elliot Anderson in the crowd at Wembleypublished at 09:08 Greenwich Mean Time

Newcastle fans certainly got everywhere yesterday.

Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson - who signed from Newcastle last summer - was even spotted in the Wembley crowd celebrating amongst the Toon fans as they beat Liverpool 2-1 to end their 70-year trophy draught in the Carabao Cup final.

The Forest midfielder, nicknamed 'Geordie Maradona,' can be seen in the stands rooting for his former club at the full-time whistle with Eddie Howe and a couple of players going up to him and interacting.

The clip has been widely circulated on social media.

Anderson was sold by the Magpies for £35m to help the club to comply with the Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

Newcastle fans were bitterly disappointed but have continued to show unwavering support to the midfielder as he looks to help Forest clinch Champions League qualification.

After the adrenaline rush comes the realisation. Almost a lack of belief that it really happened...

Newcastle's Joelinton, speaking to BBC Radio Newcastle's Matthew Raisbeck after winning the EFL Cup:

"It's amazing. No words can describe how I feel. To celebrate with the fans - they deserve it so much.

"We deserve it because we work so hard. Too be able to break that long time without a trophy is an incredible feeling.

"We put our names in the history of the club and we go for more."

On Dan Burn: "I'm really pleased. Dan is a top guy and everyone loves him. He works so hard everyday and he's a Geordie, he's born there and loves the club.

"What history to be the guy who scored the first goal, man of the match, he's immense. He played so good and what a week it's been for him. I'm really happy for him to get the goal today, to get in the national team. He deserves everything because he's a top guy and works so hard."

  7. 'I'll be first there tomorrow at 8 o'clock'published at 08:43 Greenwich Mean Time

    Liverpool 1-2 Newcastle

We can tell you one Newcastle fan who won't be pulling a sicky today - Magpies man-of-the-match Dan Burn.

Fresh from scoring for his boyhood club to help them to a first domestic trophy in 70 years, the defender is reporting for England duty this morning - with or without sleep.

"I've had worse weeks," Burn told Sky Sports after also earning an England call-up. "I don't want to go to sleep because I feel like I'm dreaming and it's all going to be a lie.

"I don't get many [goals] so I saved it for a big occasion. I feel strange, I feel numb at the minute."

Will he get special dispensation to join up late with the England squad?

"No passes," he added. "I'll be first there tomorrow [at England training] at 8 o'clock."

I’ve got the bus home from Wembley many times as a Newcastle fan of 58 years and it’s always been a case of “oh well….. next time”. Yesterday I just couldn’t believe it. When the final whistle went I was ashamed because I burst into tears and then I saw that everyone around me was crying too. It was just so emotional. It’s still slightly surreal feeling, to be honest. Or maybe that’s my hangover?

    Richard, Brentford

I'm 54 & first went to watch us play Millwall in the League Cup in 1977 aged 7. We lost & then got relegated that season. You think I'd have learnt my lesson there & then! My dad can't go to the matches anymore as he's 81 but I saw him on Saturday for my mam's 80th & watched the match with my son yesterday. A great weekend! Good job I'm off work today to recover from the shock! Howay the lads!

From Ant and Dec to another famous Newcastle fan/player/legend...delete as appropriate.

As you could imagine, Alan Shearer has been very active on social media since the victory yesterday.

In separate posts on X, he wrote:

"Toon Toon arrrmyyyyyyyyy. Ah man. Did the Geordies deserve that or what! That was amazing!"

"Liverpool are a great club and will win the league and have been brilliant this season but the Geordies absolutely smashed them today and deserved it…."

There were a few words sprinkled in there that we cannot repeat - but we will let him off after such a historic and emotional day.

He has also posted this morning, quoting the club's image of the squad in the dressing room with the EFL Cup with a simple "Thank you."

How I wish I was going into work in an office job in the north east this morning, rather than a primary school in Leicester where none of my colleagues even watched the match and most of them aren’t even aware that it happened… still completely elated!

    Dave (Newcastle fan in Leicester)

I am on a train back to Toon from Kings Cross, didn’t sleep last night, sitting in the quiet coach and there’s a full on party and replay of yesterday’s match in progress. Even in my wildest days I haven’t seen anything like it Toon Toon …. It’s gonna be a fun week in the Toon for sure. Chap sitting nearby said he’s been ‘dreaming about this train ride home for years' (Oh, and I just put on an ‘out of office’ message….).

That's another Craig, not me. No 'out of office' message here...

The first moment of calm and reflection since the euphoria of last night came when walking the dog along Blyth beach shortly after sunrise this morning. For Dan Burn and for all of us, it all just feels…joyful.

    Liverpool 1-2 Newcastle

More from Eddie Howe on Dan Burn's opener and Newcastle's hapless training on set-pieces in preparation for the final: "We worked consistently for two weeks on set plays just for this game and if you had seen us in practice you would have said we had no chance.

"We couldn't believe Dan Burn scored - he didn't train like that! He was a colossus for us."

On his tactical plan: "Both teams were quite direct and we dealt with that really well. Nobody wanted to make a mistake, there wasn't much pretty football played but we were effective in both boxes.

"We didn't want to show our hand when we played them a few weeks ago, we still wanted to win that game we just did it in a different way."

Eddie Howe giving a superb display of flexibly working with what you have to get results and not feeling the pressure to buy in success. Amorim take note! For Liverpool… Plymouth Argyle, PSG, Newcastle. Next up, Arsenal? Probably not… but a man can dream!

Here is what Eddie Howe said to Sky Sports after the final whistle: "I want to enjoy it first. I am always about tomorrow but I'll put the coaching books away for a few days."

On ending Newcastle's 70-year wait for a domestic trophy: "We were well aware of the history and we wanted to do the club proud. We wanted to score, we wanted to perform and we wanted to win.

"We are breaking new ground, I thought we were magnificent today."

The tears flowed and the joy was unconfined as Newcastle United finally exorcised the ghosts of 56 years of failure on a Wembley stage that has haunted them most.

When referee John Brooks sounded the final whistle to confirm their 2-1 Carabao Cup win over Liverpool, a giant black-and-white wave of celebration swept around the stadium that had delivered nine successive defeats since Newcastle won the 1955 FA Cup.

Finally, they had ended the long wait. It was 56 years since a major trophy landed on Tyneside in the shape of the long-defunct Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, the ensuing years an era when the club has become a punchline and punchbag for other fans to feast on.

Now - after a fully deserved victory engineered by a manager in Eddie Howe who has transformed the club in a time of riches under Saudi Arabian owners - the curse has been cast aside.

Wembley was barely big enough to contain the noise and emotion that fuelled a magnificent performance, some fans in tears even before the end, many covering their eyes unable to watch as the clock stretched towards 100 minutes and the glorious release of victory.

Howe and his players have secured their place in Tyneside history. The Carabao Cup may not be top of trophy priorities elsewhere, but this is a triumph that will mean everything for a giant of a club and fanbase.

At last I’ve been able to update a Newcastle United trophy mug bought for me when I was a 10-year-old in Easter 1974! A few weeks later and I watched my first FA Cup final with Newcastle in it, that terrible loss to Liverpool. 50 years later and I’m still checking the news to make sure we didn’t blow it this time. Unbelievable. Howay the lads.
