  1. 'They had a very good tournament'published at 12:21 British Summer Time

    England

England boss Thomas Tuchel has explained his decision to include Elliot Anderson for the first time in his squad, while Newcastle's Tino Livramento is also back with the seniors.

Oh, and it's also Tuchel's 52nd birthday. Happy birthday!

"Very physical. A lot of volume and very good clean passing. Tino Livramento is also with us based on these observations because they had a very good tournament [at U21 Euros].

"Anderson is also with us and pressed a lot in midfield. A regular player for Nottingham Forest and had a fantastic season. He is excited to come join us and hope he can make his mark."

  3. 'The Spanish media have a narrative already on Trent'published at 12:15 British Summer Time

    Guillem Balague
Spanish football journalist on BBC Euro Leagues podcast

The Spanish media have a narrative already on Trent: "He’s too shy, he doesn’t fit in, Carvajal will surpass him".

    I hope he hears this.

He has a big challenge. We know he can go up and down, but can he adapt to a Xabi Alonso team and do it consistently.

Dani Carvajal has an advantage because he can do it straight away, understands it and knows what Xabi wants. Trent needs an education on what he needs to do.

Carvajal, even though he is 33, will be difficult to take out of the line-up.

Never thought I'd see the day when an England squad had not a single player from either Liverpool or Man Utd. A sign of the times, both in buying foreign talent over local lads (Liverpool) and being on their knees (Utd). Still pretty shocking though.

Get Involved - Trent omission the right decision?published at 11:58 British Summer Time

Anyone who doubts the fact that TAA is the best English right-back and one of the world's best needs to give their head a wobble. He is both those things and I have no axe to grind here.

    Unjust William

When players like Reece James and Djed Spence are available, it would be criminal to have prioritised Trent when he has (with respect) shown absolutely nothing since leaving Liverpool. I don't doubt his quality, but you prove your place before entering the England squad, not while you're there.

    Harry

Harsh but fair decision on Trent, especially considering he's behind Carvajal at Madrid it seems. James, Livramento and Spence all seem to be (fairly) ahead in the pecking order at RB. Hope Trent gains some form though, he's still definitely an asset going forward when he's at his best.

Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner on Marc Guehi's future amid Liverpool talks: ""He has to [be a Crystal Palace player]. It is not possible to find a Marc Guehi replacement who can play straight in the Premier League."

  11. What next for Alexander-Arnold?published at 11:46 British Summer Time

    England

Now then, what next for Trent Alexander-Arnold?

It's not been plain sailing since he left boyhood club Liverpool for Real Madrid in the summer after starting the latest La Liga game on the bench.

And now he has the disappointment of being left out of the England squad to deal with.

The right-back has 34 caps but has found it difficult to nail down a spot in the side with competition from Kyle Walker and Reece James.

After an unsuccessful spell in midfield under Gareth Southgate, it seems as though Alexander-Arnold still has work to do to nail down an England spot.

Trent Alexander-Arnold is set to be left out of Thomas Tuchel’s latest England squad, according to BBC Sport sources.

The right-back left Liverpool for Real Madrid in the summer and was named in Tuchel’s previous squad.

However, it is understood Alexander-Arnold will not be named in Tuchel’s squad for the World Cup qualifiers versus Albania and Serbia.

Meanwhile, Everton attacker Jack Grealish may also miss out despite assistant manager Anthony Barry watching him last weekend against Brighton.

One player who's really deserving of an England call up but never mentioned by the media - Djed Spence. Can play both right back and left back where England are short of quality options, excellent defensively and full of energy going forward. Would be madness if he isn't called up.

Why don’t Newcastle sell Isak to Al Nassr? No denying he is worth £150m and they would certainly be able to make that happen. Would grant Isak his wish of leaving and solve any PSR issues Newcastle may face.

  18. How will Simons fit in at Spurs?published at 11:29 British Summer Time

    Jordan Butler
    BBC Sport journalist

The talented Dutch international was reportedly a target for Chelsea during this transfer window and his arrival represents a coup for Thomas Frank – but where will he play at Spurs?

Frank is known for his tactical flexibility and he’s employed two different formations in his first three games in charge – a 5-3-2 in the Super Cup final against Paris Saint-Germain and his more familiar 4-3-3 in the league. Simons is best suited to the latter, where he would most likely play on the left of Frank’s front three so he can cut inside to use his more favoured right foot.

The 22-year old was predominantly used on the left in the Bundesliga last season with 75% of his time spend on that side of the pitch. He can also play centrally or on the right if needed.

However, RB Leipzig’s former head coach Marco Rose often asked Simons to play either deeper in a traditional 4-4-2 or more narrowly in a 4-2-2-2 – his ‘box midfield’ setup which encouraged the full-backs to get forward – which suggests he’ll need time to adapt to Frank’s methods.

  20. Anderson's rapid rise continuespublished at 11:20 British Summer Time

    Alex Howell
BBC Sport football reporter at Wembley

Elliot Anderson is set to receive his first call-up to the England senior squad.

The 22-year-old has been excellent since his move to Nottingham Forest.

Anderson was part of the England U21 side that retained the Euros in Slovakia in the summer.

He was an important part of that side with spectators and importantly FA staff remarking about how he played like a senior professional.

Anderson was named in team of the tournament and looks like he is going to be given his chance to cement his place as the third midfielder in Thomas Tuchel's side.

Nobody has been able to tie down the place next to Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham and even though Bellingham is out for this window, Anderson can show to the England manager what he might be able to bring to a World Cup team.
