Liverpool boss Arne Slot on Florian Wirtz, who was nullified against Newcastle: "We only 40% ball in play against Newcastle so for them to have a lot of touches is quite hard and when the ball was play it was in the air. So there was not much football on the ground. I also know Mo [Salah] would have loved to touch the ball more. So it is the opposition you play and their playing style. But is not the first time we have played this playing style and we know we can do better."

Liverpool boss Arne Slot on how important it is to not drop points against a title rival so early in the season: "You do play better later in the season so you can lose ground [early] but not a lot. Although, I would be surprised if there will be a points record and a team gets more than 100 points because of the strength in the league. So you are able to drop a few points and still be competitive. But the best thing is not to drop points."

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Arne Slot on potential transfers: "As always, we try to sign players that can help but there is no reason to complain after the first two games that we need more. But if we can strengthen we will, if it is the right money and the right player. But there are only 3-4 days left. So let's see if we do something."

  13. Chelsea's loss, Spurs' gain?published at 08:36 British Summer Time

It had appeared likely that Netherlands international Xavi Simons would be heading to west London this summer.

Chelsea held talks to sign the 22-year-old but the Blues needed to complete some outgoings before sanctioning a move for Simons.

However, the likes of Nicolas Jackson, Raheem Sterling and Wesley Fofana remain at the club.

Tottenham are on the verge of signing RB Leipzig attacker Xavi Simons for 60m euros (£51.8m).

The Netherlands international is in England, with sources indicating he has completed his medical before signing for Thomas Frank's side.

The clubs have an agreement in principle over the overall package that will allow the 22-year-old to move to north London, with the finer details of the deal to be concluded within the next 24 hours.

Chelsea held talks with Leipzig over a move for Simons earlier this summer but are set to complete a £40m move for Manchester United's Alejandro Garnacho.

Simons is now set to join Joao Palhinha and Mohammed Kudus as summer arrivals at Spurs.

Spurs failed in their bid to sign Nottingham Forest attacking midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White earlier this summer, while one of their main targets Eberechi Eze chose to join rivals Arsenal from Crystal Palace.

With one-game-a-week until the FA Cup starts in January, you can see why Mainoo may be questioning his game time at Manchester United.

But, should he leave, then Ruben Amorim's options would be thin on the ground.

  17. Mainoo's motivespublished at 08:21 British Summer Time

There's never a dull day at Old Trafford, is there?

With just four days left of the transfer window, England international Mainoo has asked to leave the club on loan.

Why?Well, the midfielder's not played a single minute in United's two Premier League matches so far this term.

He played 90 minutes in *that* Carabao Cup defeat by Grimsby on Wednesday but the loss means United - who are without European football this season - will have an even more reduced fixture list this term.

BBC Sport chief football news reporter

Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo has asked to leave Old Trafford on loan.

United have rejected the request, telling Mainoo they value him and want him to stay and fight for his place.

It remains to be seen whether there are further conversations about the issue before the transfer deadline on Monday.

Mainoo, 20, played the full 90 minutes in Wednesday's EFL Cup penalty shootout defeat at Grimsby.

However, he was an unused substitute for both of United's opening Premier League games and head coach Ruben Amorim has told the England international he is fighting for a place with skipper Bruno Fernandes.

Mainoo has a contract to 2027 but negotiations over an extension have stalled.

It is understood he does not want to leave United permanently but is concerned about the amount of Premier League game time he will get.
