Mihailo Ivanovic's goal was his second of the season

High-flying Millwall and Preston North End shared the points and also matched each other in dreadful first-half defending in an eventful draw.

North End, who were seeking a fourth consecutive Championship win, were gifted an early goal against the run of play when Michael Smith anticipated Camiel Neghli's ill-advised backpass and finished smartly.

But Millwall were level by the break thanks to keeper Daniel Iversen's calamitous miskick, which allowed Mihailo Ivanovic to roll the ball into an empty net.

The open nature of the game continued after the break, with Millwall remaining on top and creating the better chances.

Ivanovic, Thiero Ballo, Casper De Norre and Jake Cooper all went close for the hosts, while Lions forward Aidomo Emakhu wasted a great one-on-one opportunity.

But Preston were an increasing threat in the closing stages, with substitute Thierry Small going close with a strike that somehow went wide after squirming under keeper Max Crocombe, who also saved from Lewis Dobbin.

Millwall, who were beaten 4-0 by Birmingham City in their previous match and have now not won in three, were on top for an hour.

But for all their pressure and possession, they only managed one attempt on target until Iversen's blunder gifted them the leveller.

The keeper tried to hoof a long ball upfield following a throw-in, but touched the ball with his right foot as he swung his left, leaving Ivanovic with the simple task of rolling the ball home.

The comedic goalkeeping was contagious, with Crocombe joining in by delaying a clearance which so nearly nestled in the back of the net for a second Preston goal after it was charged down.

The Lions continued to impress on the resumption but wasted numerous chances and were grateful to end with a point as the visitors finished the stronger - and so nearly snatched a win which would have taken them up to second in the table.

'It was a beauty' - reaction

Millwall boss Alex Neil told BBC London:

"I thought we were good in the first half and I was quite happy. The mistake is disappointing and it gives Preston a leg up. From there they are a hard team to break down.

"Defensively, we didn't want any silly mistakes and we gave ourselves a mountain to climb, but in the main, I thought we were by far the better side in the first half.

"We had a few opportunities, got in good spaces and areas and we were hoping something would drop for us - and then they made a mistake.

"We started the second half well but the game flipped in their favour when their subs came on. They had more energy and impetus and we had to defend well and Max made a good save.

"We certainly didn't deserve to lose and over the 90 minutes we probably edged it, but when it finishes like it did in the last 10-15 minutes we'll take the point.

"We had good moments but we missed the clinical edge, that moment of quality. We obviously want to get more of that."

Preston boss Paul Heckingbottom on Daniel Iversen's mistake and subsequent response:

"It was a beauty, wasn't it? I've seen a few of them before from goalkeepers – it's never nice when it happens to your team.

"I'm really pleased he made a good save in the second half because other than that he was pretty quiet.

"He came for a good cross at the end but again he was protected really well by the team in front of him.

"He's a great character. He's played a lot of games and he knows how valuable he is to us. It's just frustrating when it does cost you points in a game.

"There were good moments but second half I loved the mentality we showed and how combative we were. I really enjoyed the second half."
