With Milos Kerkez about to step through the door at Anfield, questions about Andy Robertson's future at Liverpool persist: will he be the back-up for the young Hungarian or will his career take him to Spain with Atletico Madrid?

The 31-year-old Scot has one year left on his contract with the Reds and has caught the eye of Atletico head coach Diego Simeone, who is in the market for an experienced left-back. Following the initial story of the La Liga side's interest over a week ago, however, not much else has happened since.

With Atletico now out of the Club World Cup, will a move for Robertson, who is a two-time Premier League champion and Champions League winner, start to pick up a bit more pace?

In terms of how Liverpool play football, Milos Kerkez appears the perfect full-back.

The 21-year-old recovered the ball 169 times last season - the fifth-most of any defender in the Premier League and more than any Liverpool defender. He also won the ball in Bournemouth's attacking third 11 times - the ninth most of defenders in the division and again more than any of his potential future Reds team-mates.

In a Bournemouth team that eventually finished ninth, the Hungary international created 34 chances from open play - the seventh most by a defender - and registered five assists which placed him joint-fourth in that ranking.

In terms of ball progression, Kerkez passed into the final third 476 times - the 10th most times of any Premier League defender - behind the Reds' two first choice full-backs last season. No Liverpool defender completed more dribbles than his 22.

Milos Kerkez and Andy Robertson stats

Milos Kerkez is expected to be first choice as Liverpool’s left-back next season when his move goes through and contrasting his numbers with the long-serving Andy Robertson, who the 21-year-old could effectively replace, perhaps shows why.

The Hungary international started every Premier League game this season (which in part helps boosts his numbers) but the fact that Robertson failed to start nine games, and produced just one assist, may suggest that the latter’s influence is beginning to wane as he struggled to return to full fitness in this campaign following injury problems last season.

Uncharacteristically, Robertson also significantly underperformed the assists he would have been expected to provide.

Kerkez, on the other hand, outperformed his expected assists by some margin, whilst providing double the amount of overlaps and 35% more crosses from open play.

Robertson, who has been linked with a move to Atletico Madrid, has been a wonderful servant for the Reds. The 31-year-old has won two league titles and the 2019 Champions League across nine years at Anfield, but it may simply be a case that younger legs are needed to perform the demands of Arne Slot’s system.

  4. What would Kerkez bring to Liverpool?published at 12:51 British Summer Time

    Edu Rubio
Former West Ham and Wolves first-team coach

Milos Kerkez is a fantastic and much needed addition to Liverpool’s squad. He is versatile; he can play LB, LWB and even LCB.

He has got great potential to grow even further on; yet Andy Robertson still has better offensive stats than him. Maybe because of the context/teams etc; but his numbers show his attacking input is remarkably good.

Now, Kerkez's solid defensive stats and his physical aptitude can offer Arne Slot a different option down the left flank. They are both excellent full-backs, but they are both different and unique.

Milos interceptions and clearances stats show he can make Liverpool even more difficult to break. Offensively his ball progressive carrier is very good; which can help his team penetrate into the opposition’s half faster, aggressively and efficiently. This can support Liverpool’s offensive game too, no doubt.

Nottingham Forest do not want to sell Anthony Elanga.

The winger has become a key man at the City Ground and Forest have rejected an offer, reportedly worth £45m, from Newcastle.

The Magpies have admired the 23-year-old for a while and tried to bring him to St James' Park last summer.

Yet Forest are prepared to stand firm and want to keep their big players ahead of returning to Europe next season after sealing a Europa Conference League play-off spot.

Elanga played in every one of Forest's Premier League games last season, making 31 starts and scoring six times as Nuno Espirito Santo's side finished seventh.

He joined for £15m from Manchester United in 2023 and has made 82 appearances for Forest, scoring 11 goals.

  10. How has Gittens performed for Dortmund?published at 12:13 British Summer Time

Forward Jamie Gittens, who is at the centre of the rumour mill as he is being linked to clubs like Chelsea, has not been used heavily at the Club World Cup.

He has only played in one of Dortmund's two games so far, coming off the bench for the final 13 minutes of their 0-0 draw against Fluminense.

A few players have been impressive for Borussia Dortmund so far at the Club World Cup, notably Jamie Gittens' fellow Englishman Jobe Bellingham.

The 19-year-old midfielder, who signed earlier this month from Sunderland, has made an instant impact by scoring in Dortmund's 4-3 win over Mamelodi Sundowns on Saturday.

  12. Who do Dortmund play next?published at 12:03 British Summer Time

Borussia Dortmund have not guaranteed their spot in the last 16 at the Club World Cup yet and their final group match, against Ulsan HD, will decide their fate.

They are joint-leaders of Group F with Fluminese on four points but third-place Mamelodi Sundowns are on three points, so Dortmund could miss out if they lose and the South African side win.

Dortmund play Ulsan HD later at 20:00 BST, with Mamelodi Sundowns facing Brazilian outfit Fluminese at the same time.

  13. What could Gittens bring to Chelsea?published at 11:48 British Summer Time

    Noel Sliney

Jamie Gittens ranked in the top 2% among wingers for successful dribbles in Europe’s top five leagues in 2024-25.

Gittens also scored twice as many goals as expected based on the quality of his chances, an overperformance only bettered by five players in Europe’s leading divisions last seaso

However, he ranks in the bottom 20% for chances created and registered fewer assists than any of Chelsea’s other likely wingers for next season. Nonetheless, the stats overall suggest he’d provide something different to the club’s current options.

Jamie Gittens stats compared to similar players

Jamie Gittens scored 11 goals in the first half of a breakthrough 2024-25 campaign but only added one more after mid-January and has been largely out of favour since the arrival in February of new head coach Niko Kovac, who prefers a 3-5-2 system.

A rapid right-footed winger who’s most comfortable on the left flank, Gittens’ top speed of 22.34mph last season was the 16th fastest in the German top flight.

That pace helps him excel in one-against-one situations – he came top among Bundesliga players across all competitions last season for dribbles attempted and completed.

Chelsea have restarted talks with Borussia Dortmund over winger Jamie Gittens in an attempt to find an agreement.

The England Under-21 international has played just 13 minutes in the Club World Cup under Dortmund boss Niko Kovac and is keen to move to Stamford Bridge having previously been offered a seven-year deal with the club.

Bayern Munich are known to be interested but unlikely to progress talks.

Paul Pogba was provisionally suspended after being randomly tested following Juventus' opening game of the 2023-24 season against Udinese.

The World Cup winner later received a four-year ban which was reduced to 18 months in October following an appeal.

The former Manchester United midfielder has been free to recommence his career since March after reaching an agreement with Juventus to leave the Italian club.

In the final judgement of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas) it was confirmed Pogba inadvertently took DHEA, a substance which boosts testosterone and is on the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) banned list.

Crucially, however, the ruling stated DHEA only has an affect on females.

Arsenal are set to complete the signing of Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga this week.

The 30-year-old has a £5m release clause after adding an extra year to his contract last summer before a successful loan spell at Bournemouth.

The former Spain international will soon join Arsenal to compete with compatriot David Raya for the starting spot.

Arsenal needed a new number two goalkeeper after opting against a permanent move for Neto, who spent last season on loan at Emirates Stadium from Bournemouth.
