1. What's to come?published at 10:51 British Summer Time

Right, we're going to shift our focus away from the Club World Cup and onto the transfer market.

Throughout the rest of the morning and heading into this afternoon, we'll cover the latest done deals, gossip and updates on the big transfer stories.

    Let's get stuck in.

  2. Who is through to the last 16 of the Club World Cup?published at 10:43 British Summer Time

Here's how the line-up looks so far for the first knockout stage of the Club World Cup:

    • Palmeiras v Botafogo (Saturday, Philadelphia)
    • Benfica v Chelsea (Saturday, Charlotte)
    • Paris St-Germain v Inter Miami (Sunday, Atlanta)
    • Flamengo v Bayern Munich (Sunday, Miami)

It’s record temperatures in Philadelphia. It felt like 36 degrees when they were playing even at 9pm at the Lincoln Financial Field but there were a few good performers – I thought Enzo Fernandez was good, a couple of debuts for Andrey Santos and Mamadou Sarr off the bench.

Chelsea are looking in good shape all of a sudden with sort of favourable games to come in the knockout stages. They go through as runners-up after losing to Flamengo, who finished first.

A lot of people are saying that Flamengo have ended up with the more difficult tie as they play the team who finished second [in Group C], which is Bayern Munich, and Chelsea play the team who finished first which is Benfica.

They've avoided a difficult team in the quarter-finals because they'd face Brazilian opposition and you'd expect Chelsea, with their resources, to be favourites, so it's a nice route to the semi-finals in New York for Chelsea.

I don’t know what all this judgement over Jackson is. Truth is he just hasn’t hit the heights yet. If he was scoring massive goals at important times like Drogba did again and again, all would be forgiven. And Didier was sent off in a Champions League final! Jackson needs love, support and belief, and he’ll get there. Great to have two young strikers with so much potential at the club.

Nicolas Jackson's late studs-up challenge on Flamengo defender Lucas Ayrton at the end of a disastrous six-minute collapse, where goals from Bruno Henrique and Danilo cancelled out Neto's early strike, put him in the firing line after a poor 3-1 defeat in the Blues' second match.

The 24-year-old, on his birthday, had only been on the field four minutes after replacing Delap, with his suspension opening the door for his rival to also start the final group game.

Jackson was subsequently banned for a further match by world governing body Fifa, so will miss the last-16 tie against Benfica.

Chelsea were well-beaten by Flamengo with one source describing it as a "wake-up call" about the level of South American opposition, who arrive at the Club World Cup mid-season.

Chelsea will face Brazilian opposition again if they reach the quarter-finals, with Palmeiras and Botafogo playing each other in a last-16 tie.

With Jackson unnecessary anger issues on the pitch, I don't think I will be comfortable having him lead the attack for Chelsea come next season, Delap all the way.

Bharat from the Philly Blues was one of the Chelsea fans at their latest Club World Cup game and told BBC Sport: "I haven't had any complaints about the organisation.

"I can understand some of the complaints about player welfare. It feels like they are using this competition as a dry run for next year's World Cup and it will be interesting to see if they make any changes."

UK-based Chelsea fan Cathy hasn't missed an away game for 47 years and was one of the few to travel to the United States to continue her run.

"The pricing is too high considering the quality of some teams in the competition," she said.

"It has left only fans of the teams involved in the competition interested in watching it and that is an own goal by Fifa."

Cathy added: "Chelsea fans are also worried about the impact it will have on the players with them having no rest and potentially getting injured."

English football has always had a fascination with young heroes. But if history teaches us anything, it is this: not all fairy tales begin with being thrown into the fire. Some are forged slowly, with wisdom, trust, and time. Chelsea must decide not just who leads their line, but how they define leadership — as a reward for proven reliability, or as a symbol of hopeful promise. In Jackson and Delap, they have two excellent options — but only one should bear the full weight, at least for now. And perhaps, just this once, the media should step back and let the football do the talking

Liam Delap opened his Chelsea goal account against ES Tunis and after the match he told Dazn: "It's a great feeling. We needed to win today and to get a goal is a special feeling, even more importantly we are through to the next stage."

On wearing the number nine, he added: "You have got to have belief and confidence as a player, it's just a number on a shirt at the end of the day. It doesn't mean that much to me, I don't believe in all that stuff, so hopefully I can just keep delivering."

  11. Delap v Jackson statspublished at 09:46 British Summer Time

Liam Delap scored his first Chelsea goal against ES Tunis. He will be hoping it is the first of many for his new club, who signed him after an impressive season with Ipswich Town.

The 22-year-old forward played 40 games for Ipswich in the 2024-25 campaign, scoring 12 goals and providing two assists across all competitions.

But how does that compare to Chelsea forward Nicolas Jackson? Well he played in less games - partly because of injury - pitching in 13 goals and five assists in 34 games in all competitions, prior to the Club World Cup.

In terms of discipline, Jackson received one red card in the Premier League and seven yellows across 30 appearances. Delap received 12 yellow cards but no reds in 37 league games.

New Zealand amateurs Auckland City held Boca Juniors to a 1-1 draw in the Club World Cup.

Christian Gray scored Auckland's only goal of the competition in the second half to earn his side a memorable result in Nashville.

Auckland held their own for 25 minutes but were undone in unfortunate circumstances when Lautaro di Lollo's header struck the post before hitting goalkeeper Nathan Garrow and creeping over the line.

Despite spending most of the game on the back foot, Auckland got their Club World Cup moment early in the second half when Gray headed a corner beyond Boca keeper Agustin Marchesin.

Shortly after Gray's equaliser, the game was suspended for about 40 minutes because of adverse weather in the area.

Boca dominated after play resumed but could not find a winner as Auckland held on for a historic draw.

"I'm from a small town, a long way from here and a lot different to this environment. So it is somewhat of a dream," said 28-year-old Gray, who is training to be a teacher back in New Zealand.

Boca needed Bayern Munich to beat Benfica in the other Group C game and make sure they beat Auckland in order to go through to the last 16.

  14. How much can Chelsea earn from Club World Cup?published at 09:27 British Summer Time

    Nizaar Kinsella
BBC Sport football news reporter in Philadelphia

According to Fifa, the Club World Cup is the most lucrative competition in club football on a per match basis.

Chelsea made just under $38m (£28m) for qualifying for the tournament.

They earned another $2m for each win in the group stage, beating LAFC and ES Tunis. They will also earn $7.5m when facing Benfica in the round of 16, which takes their total to $49.5m.

There is a further $13.1m on offer for reaching the quarter-final, $21m for the semi-final and $30m for reaching the final. A further $40m is reserved for the winner.

That all adds up to an extra $104m (£76.4m) for the victorious team.

Midfielder Enzo Fernandez captained the team in the absence of an ill Reece James and set up both goals before being taken off for debutant Andrey Santos in the second half. Mamadou Sarr also made his first appearance for the club.

Several Chelsea players struggled to impress - like Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Malo Gusto and Christopher Nkunku - but it was understandable in such difficult conditions after so many changes.

Hopefully, Liam Delap will be able to hold the striker role until Nicolas Jackson has a complete anger management treatment. Jackson has picked up two red cards for lashing out in frustration. We can't afford to have an off-and-on striker next season.

As an England fan I hope Delap starts over Jackson and has the best season of his life so is full of confidence going into the World Cup next year. England need a successor to Harry Kane.

  17. Chelsea battle heat to reach last 16published at 08:56 British Summer Time

    Nizaar Kinsella
BBC Sport football news reporter in Philadelphia

Chelsea have been unfortunate to encounter unseasonably warm heat after booking a base at Philadelphia Union's Subaru Park stadium and training ground.

Manager Maresca has described it as "impossible" to train in temperatures reaching 40C, which rank as the highest felt in the area in 13 years.

There have been health warnings advising against strenuous physical outdoor activity, so Chelsea have conducted "very short" training sessions with giant fans spraying cold water and drinks breaks after every drill.

They are next based in Miami - 750 miles to the south of where they play their last-16 match in Charlotte, North Carolina - and are expected to move to New York should they reach the latter stages.

  18. Benfica beat Bayern to progress as group winnerspublished at 08:46 British Summer Time

    Benfica 1-0 Bayern Munich

Benfica beat Bayern Munich to progress to the Club World Cup last 16 as Group C winners amid sweltering temperatures in the United States.

The match began at 3pm local time (20:00 BST) at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina, with the temperature at 36C - and both sides were far from their best in the tough conditions.

Andreas Schjelderup scored the only goal in the 13th minute, with a low finish from 15 yards out after Fredrik Aursnes had done well and pulled the ball back into his path.

Victory means Portugal's Benfica will play Group D runners-up Chelsea on Saturday, at the same venue.

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca on the importance of his side going deep in the Club World Cup:

"It's important for us because there were 32 clubs in this tournament, now there's 16.

"There are clubs who in the last five or six years have played in Champions League finals, like Atletico Madrid, and they are already back in Spain, so we need to be proud and happy. Now the target is to reach the quarter-finals."
