In the other game in Chelsea's group, Flamengo needed a late equaliser to clinch a draw with Los Angeles FC and seal top spot in Group D.

Timothy Tillman's free-kick caught the Flamengo defence napping in the 84th minute and Denis Bouanga raced through on goal to convert.

But the Brazilian side struck back two minutes later as former Arsenal and Chelsea midfielder Jorginho laid off to Wallace Yan, who strode past one man before slotting the ball into the bottom corner.

That meant Flamengo finished one point above Chelsea with seven points, while the Premier League outfit had six after wins over LA FC and ES Tunis.

Chelsea's win over ES Tunis took place in front of 32,967 fans at Lincoln Financial Field, which has a capacity of 67,000.

Liam Delap proved he can be a threatening option up front, with alternative striking option Nicolas Jackson still suspended for the last-16 match against Benfica following his sending off against Flamengo.

The forward opened his Chelsea account with a stylish goal - a deft first touch, spin and placed shot into the bottom corner just before referee Yaez Falcon Perez blew his half-time whistle.

The England under-21 international had earlier spun into space after Noni Madueke's pass inside and saw a shot saved by goalkeeper Bechir Ben Said.

Now that Liam Delap has scored his first goal for Chelsea, manager Enzo Maresca - who coached Delap at Manchester City - expects swift progress from the 22-year-old striker.

"We expect to progress quite quickly with Liam," he said. "The reason why is because we know him and he knows us and the way we want to play. Also, it's because he's a very good player."

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca on why he made eight changes to his starting line-up following the 3-1 loss to Flamengo:

"It’s impossible not to rotate players because playing every three days in these conditions means it’s not possible for them to play every game.

"The ones that played were good and we’ve given some rest to Moi [Caicedo], Trev [Chalobah], Levi [Colwill], Cucu [Marc Cucurella], Cole [Palmer], Pedro [Neto] - many players. It’s important to recover the energy and try to win the next game."

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca: "The performance, for me, was good. It was not easy and until we scored the first goal, it was difficult to break their defensive line down.

"We were quite patient, and when we scored the first goal, the game became a little more open and a little easier for us."

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca's team selection appeared to be impacted by the extreme temperatures in Philadelphia, which still 'felt like' 36C by the 9pm kick-off because of the humidity.

The Italian made eight changes to his starting line-up against ES Tunis and rested star forward Cole Palmer, Chelsea's top scorer in the competition Pedro Neto, and record signing Moises Caicedo.

Maresca made five substitutions during a flat second half as Chelsea eased away from an improbable upset against their African opponents, who came into the match needing a win to progress at Chelsea's expense.

Chelsea line-up inc. substitutes: Filip Jorgensen, Malo Gusto (Mamadou Sarr 82), Tosin Adarabioyo, Benoit Badiashile, Josh Acheampong, Noni Madueke (Tyrique George 68), Enzo Fernandez (Andrey Santos 68), Romeo Lavia (Dario Essugo 59), Christopher Nkunku, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Liam Delap (Marc Guiu 59).

Striker Liam Delap scored his first Chelsea goal as the Blues qualified for the knockout stages of the Club World Cup with a win over ES Tunis.

The 22-year-old scored with a placed shot deep into first half added time to get off the mark after his £30m move from Ipswich earlier this month.

It came just two minutes after defender Tosin Adarabioyo headed in a free-kick from Enzo Fernandez to open the scoring.

Substitute Tyrique George added a late third with practically the last kick of the match at Lincoln Financial Field.
