  5. 'Coming back here was a big thing'published at 16:10 British Summer Time 22 September

    FT: Arsenal 2-2 Man City

    Manchester City

Vivianne Miedema speaking to Sky Sports after scoring against her former club: "If you look at the whole game it’s probably the deserved result for both teams. We both had moments that we were on top of the game. We could have scored again at 2-1 but Arsenal had a lot of big chances as well."

On her goal: "Me coming back here today was a big thing. I’m really happy with the reception I got from the Arsenal fans and the most important thing today was to start the season well with the new team. It’s always nice to get off that zero again and get a goal. From now on it’s just focus on the next games."

On her muted celebration: "I’m not really a big celebration person anyway. You saw a bit of emotion but that’s normal, besides that be respectful to the fans that supported me for the last seven years as well. I’m happy to get my first City goal in the league but the bigger picture today was just to get through and I’m happy I have done that."

  6. 'It will be the most competitive WSL there has ever been'published at 16:07 British Summer Time 22 September

    FT: Arsenal 2-2 Man City

    Arsenal

Arsenal manager Jonas Eidevall speaking to the world feed:

On Mead getting the equaliser off the bench: "I think all our players would prefer to play from the start, but I always say that people remember the minutes you play. Sometimes you can do a lot with 30 minutes.

"As important it is to start the game well it is important to finish the game well. It is important that we use our whole squad to do that. Sometimes you will be a starter, other times you will be a finisher, but you will need to have quality in both roles, you owe that to the team, and the players all did that today."

Can they challenge Chelsea for the title? "I think it is going to be a really exciting and competitive season in the WSL. There are so many teams that have improved and continued to invest. It will be by far the most competitive WSL there has ever been. Does that mean we can win it? Absolutely it does, but so can other teams. So we need to be on our best behaviour every day, every game, and if we are then we have a great opportunity."

  7. 'VAR would settle things down'published at 16:06 British Summer Time 22 September

    FT: Arsenal 2-2 Man City

    Manchester City

Manchester City manager Gareth Taylor speaking to BBC TV: "A little bit of frustration, not necessarily with the result but a little bit around our performance levels. I think we've done some really good things in pre-season, we had a fabulous result mid-week, we really dominated in our pressing in the ball. That was off today, we didn't get it quite right.

"The communication could be better between the team but overall, when you're not quite at it and second half we improved, but still we've got levels to go and when you take it all into account it's a positive for us because it shows we can move up the gears a little bit more, iron out the deficiencies. To still come away with a point is impressive. We were almost there."

On Arsenal equaliser: "It's going to seem really one-sided from me but I was up in the gantry and I could see that the first goal that was ruled out for Arsenal was offside, you could see that clearly. If I'm to be proven wrong I'd like to see it. Similar with the foul. Both the fourth official and the linesman indicated to the radio they agreed it was a foul. Especially the tackle from behind, we were told it was a dangerous tackle - regardless if you get the ball or not. We feel a bit aggrieved on that but it happens."

On whether he would like VAR: "I think so. There's not just us to consider, a lot of other teams and every game probably throws up on of those types of decisions where we might need a second look at it. If it proves that [Katie] McCabe took the ball and didn't take any of Chloe Kelly before she took the ball then we will stand with it. I think it would settle things down a bit, particularly for us guys on the side who don't know the justification of why. For offside and those ones it's important to help the officials as much as we can."

On Vivianne Miedema: "What a moment for her to have in terms of getting us back into it, back level. The ability she showed on the ball was great. It's a tough day for her and she got a rapturous applause which she deserved for what she has done at this club. They're never easy these games when you come back to former clubs but she has handled herself well. She'll be glad this one is out of the way.

On missing Jess Park's goal: "I did miss it. I was on my way down from the gantry but I heard it was good so I look forward to seeing it later."

    Tottenham 4-0 Crystal Palace

More heroics from Shae Yanez in the Crystal Palace goal late on but it is still a comprehensive win for Tottenham.

Hayley Raso opened the scoring on her debut before second-half strikes from Jess Naz, Drew Spence and Olga Ahtinen - the last of which was a real cracker.

Palace had Brooke Aspin sent off late on for two very quick bookings as Laura Kaminski's received an early lesson in just how much of a step up it is from the Championship to the WSL.

It's all over and the points are shared between Liverpool and Leicester on the opening day of their WSL campaigns.

It was a disjointed performance from Matt Beard's side and he'll be hoping for improvement as the season goes on.

  15. Postpublished at 15:53 British Summer Time 22 September

Rare attack for Leicester as Deanne Rose powers forward. It's pretty poor stuff from the away side as their attack eventually comes to nothing.
