  2. Jota spoke to Gondomar football club president hours before crashpublished at 11:51 British Summer Time 4 July

    As we've been reporting, tributes have been left outside the Academy where Diogo Jota began his career in Gondomar, Portugal.

    Álvaro Cerqueira, the president of the club, says he and Jota spoke on the phone at around 22:00 local time, just hours before the accident happened.

    Speaking to local media, he said:

    "We spoke almost every week and I know he was going through a happy moment," he told Portuguese news site JN.

    Cerqueira says Jota and his brother, André Silva, trained at the local club's grounds in the off-season, and Jota often visited the young players.

    Over in Gondomar, Diogo Jota and André Silva's hometown, Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro has arrived at the Chapel of the Resurrection.

    Liverpool has cancelled pre-season fitness tests that were due to take place today for some players as a result of yesterday’s news.

    A phased return of training will now begin on Monday.

    Tributes have been paid to Diogo Jota by footballers and fans at the Women's Euros and by teams training before this weekend's matches in the men's Club World Cup quarter-finals.

    Portugal's women's team held a silence, along with opponents Spain, around the centre circle before their opening match at Euro 2025 in Switzerland.

    Supporters also held up banners and pictures of Jota during emotional scenes before the game.

    Players from Chelsea, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Paris St-Germain, who are all competing in the United States at the Club World Cup, held moments of silence during their training sessions.

    Players pictured included several who have been club and international team-mates of Jota. PSG’s tribute was particularly moving, given the presence of four Portuguese players in their squad.

    Diogo Jota's international team-mate Pedro Neto has been given an indefinite period of compassionate leave by his club Chelsea and may miss the rest of the Blues' Club World Cup campaign.

    Neto, who also played with Jota at Wolves, was absent from Chelsea's training session in Miami yesterday.

    In a news conference Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca said "it's completely Neto's decision" as to whether he wants to play in Chelsea's Club World Cup quarter-final with Palmeiras on Saturday (02:00 BST).

    Maresca added: "I had a chat this morning with Pedro. We support him. Any decision he will take is the correct one."

    Yesterday players from Club World Cup sides Chelsea, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain held moments of silence in memory of Jota and his brother André Silva before their training sessions.

    The head coach of Portugal’s men's national football team has been speaking about the death of Diogo Jota.

    In a video released by the Portugal Football Federation (FPF), Roberto Martínez said: “We have all been affected by this tragedy. We are all devastated.”

    “Our thoughts go to his wife Rute, their three children and the rest of the family, and to Diogo Jota and André Silva’s friends.

    “We have created a family in the national team that goes far beyond football. And Diogo is an important part of that – on and off the field. His professionalism and belief were both contagious and exemplary. On the pitch, Diogo wore the jersey with pride and his work on the field is world-class.

    “We feel the family's pain and, in this tragedy, we question life in general. Portugal will miss one of its heroes.”

    Former Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhín Kelleher shared a strong bond with Diogo Jota. The Irish international describes him as "one of my closest friends in football" and expresses his devastation at the news.

    In his tribute, Kelleher writes:

    "We bonded over all things, sports, watching any football match we could find - often your brother Andre’s game on your iPad.

    "I was surprised a lad from Portugal loved sports such as darts, snooker and horse racing so much and some of my best memories were having a laugh watching them with you.

    It is the small football club of Gondomar that Diogo Jota played between the ages of nine and 17.

    The academy here is named after him. Its sign shows the footballer wearing both the colours of the Portugal national side and the yellow of his hometown club as a child.

    Also emblazoned is a quote from the player himself, saying “it’s not about where we come from but where we’re going to.”

    Shirts and scarves have been laid inside a ring of candles which still flicker this morning. A wake for both men [Jota and his brother, André Silva] will be held here as well, with the funeral taking place tomorrow.

    Jota’s new wife could be seen leaving a morgue in Spain yesterday.

    His former coach has described him as someone who remained true to his roots as he ascended through the ranks of the game

  17. Jota’s funeral expected to be held on Saturdaypublished at 08:43 British Summer Time 4 July

    The parish priest of Diogo Jota’s hometown, Gondomar, says the funeral for the Liverpool player and his younger brother will take place tomorrow.

    Jose Manuel Macedo, from the Igreja Matriz de Gondomar in Sao Cosme, tells the PA news that the funeral will be held at the Igreja Matriz on Saturday morning at 10:00.

    Here's a reminder of what we know about Diogo Jota's journey from Portugal to Spain.

    Police have said Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva died when their Lamborghini left a road in the Spanish town of Zamora after a tyre blowout - it then caught fire.

    Jota was returning to England for pre-season training via a ferry from Santander after being advised not to fly following minor surgery.

    Zamora, close to the Portuguese border, is 305km from Porto, and a similar distance from the northern port city.

    It is understood Jota had completed the journey in reverse to get to Porto for his wedding.
