The hometown of Liverpool’s forward Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva will pay tribute to the pair with a “day of municipal mourning” today.

Gondomar City Council says the municipality’s flag “will be flown at half-mast” across the town, located just 16km from Porto, Portugal's second-largest city.

“Throughout his career, Diogo Jota stood out for his talent in football and the committed way he always represented the municipality and the country, earning national and international recognition,” the city council wrote on Facebook yesterday.

“At this time of pain and consternation, the Gondomar City Council offers its deepest condolences to the family and friends of these two Gondomar residents.”

We're resuming our coverage of the death of Liverpool forward Diogo Jota.

Jota, 28, and his brother, André Silva, 25, were killed after the car they were travelling in to return to the UK left the road due to a tyre blowout while overtaking another car.

Tributes have been pouring in for the father-of-three, who married his long-time partner Rute Cardoso only 11 days before the crash, from both Portugal and Liverpool.

The head coach of the national Portuguese football team, Roberto Martinez, says his country “will feel the loss of one of its heroes” while former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp paid tribute to “not only a fantastic player, but also a great friend”.

A vigil will be taking place in Jota’s hometown of Gondomar, some 16km east of Porto, this morning ahead of his funeral - expected to be held tomorrow.
