The football world is not the only one paying tribute to Diogo Jota and André Silva today.

Portuguese tennis player Francisco Cabral, who was on Wimbledon's Court 5 earlier for the men's doubles alongside Austria's Lucas Miedler, is wearing a black ribbon to mark the passing of his countrymen.

Cabral was seen with the ribbon on his shirt sleeve during his second-round match, after the All England Club relaxed its strict all-white dress code to allow tributes to the Liverpool forward.

People stand outside a village in the heat, some with umbrellas. There is a media presence with cameras.

In the most solemn and unexpected of homecomings, the bodies of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva were brought back to Porto last night. Their hearses were greeted with applause.

A private wake for the brothers' relatives is still taking place as the world’s media wait outside. Later it will open to the public, we're told.

Jota had returned to Portugal to marry his long term partner Rute Cardoso, who yesterday had to make the impossible trip to a Spanish morgue.

Candles still flickered at his childhood football club this morning. The academy is even named after him. Tributes came in the forms of shirts, scarves, and old photos where he posed with players.

Those who knew Diogo Jota say he was a player who stayed true to his roots. In Porto, where the grief seems most concentrated, he's seen as someone who earned his ascent to the top of football.

Portugal forward Jessica Silva said that she played in the team's opening game at Euro 2025 against Spain on Thursday with a "heavy" heart, following the death of men's national team player Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva.

Head coach Francisco Neto revealed that Jota had been a devoted supporter of the women's side, while Jessica Silva said that he was "always ready to give a word for the team".

"I knew Diogo," said Silva. "He was a really kind person - [he was] much more than a player, much more than a star. He was a guy who was always paying attention."

Fans and players at the stadium in Bern, Switzerland, joined in a heartfelt rendition of Portugal's national anthem and an impeccably observed minute's silence before kick-off.

Portugal went on to suffer a 5-0 defeat to the world champions, and Silva said that it was "a really tough day to play football".

"We've just had a very nice floral arrangement which has been placed there from the family of Harvey Elliott.

"I am behind the Anfield Road end where the book of condolence queue is, there's about a couple of hundred people in it now but it's moving quite quickly because they've opened three books because there are so many people who wish to pay their respects.

"It's been quite quite busy, quite brisk there and I'm sure more people will come through the day."

In his tribute to Diogo Jota yesterday, Liverpool manager Arne Slot said fans would continue to sing "Jota's song".

Over the past season Liverpool fans have often sung this chant, to the tune of Bad Moon Rising by Creedence Clearwater Revival, about Diogo Jota:

"Oh, he wears the No 20 / He will take us to victory / And when he’s running down the left wing / He’ll cut inside and score for LFC / He’s a lad from Portugal / Better than Figo don’t you know / Oh, his name is Diogo!"

Peter Millea said the Diogo Jota chant was regularly sung in the stands even when the forward was not playing

One mark of how popular Diogo Jota became with Liverpool fans was how regularly a chant about him rang out in the stands - even when he wasn't on the pitch.

Former Liverpool councillor Peter Millea, a home and away regular, said Jota's down-to-earth, relatable personality resonated with fellow fans as well as his talent.

He told the BBC's Marc Gaier: "There was something about him as a player when he first came to us that he became an instant hit.

"He was one of those players you can easily take to, because of the manner in which he conducted himself on and off the pitch and the important goals he scored."

Mr Millea said some fans at Anfield had broken into impromptu renditions of the chant while paying their respects.

"I'm sure we'll hear it loud and clear at Wembley for the Community Shield and we'll hear it at Preston for the first pre-season away game, you know it'll be sung around the field against Athletic Bilbao and then during the course of the rest of the season and probably forever-more," he said.

  20. Jota 'played with a smile on his face' says Heskeypublished at 12:03 British Summer Time

Former Liverpool and England forward, Emile Heskey, has been telling the BBC News Channel that he believes many people "will be mourning right now" over the death of Jota, whom he describes as a "friend to a lot of people".

"It’s just a difficult time, not only for the club [Liverpool], but for the whole footballing fraternity that we’ve lost two of our players," says Heskey, also referring to Jota’s brother André Silva, who also died in Thursday’s crash.

Speaking about Jota’s football style, he adds that his "energy" and “intelligence" were key, and that a lot of players were remembering how he "played with a smile on his face".
