Will Davies punished his former club York as their title hopes took a hit with a 2-1 home defeat by Sutton.
Sutton signed Davies from the Minstermen last summer and, having seen him score against them in a 2-2 draw in August, York were cut down by their former charge once again.
The visitors started well and it was deserved when Davies headed in from a corner after 15 minutes.
He added a second with a fine strike from the edge of the box nine minutes later but York came back after the break and saw Josh Stones hit a post.
That was a warning for Sutton and Dipo Akinyemi followed it up with an 83rd minute goal, but there would be no equaliser, with York's nearest promotion rivals Forest Green and Barnet both winning to make it a miserable afternoon for the home side.
