  1. Sparta cap off perfect tiepublished at 13:38 British Summer Time 28 August

Sparta Prague 2-0 Malmo (Agg 4-0)

Sparta Prague headed into the second tie of their Champions League play-off with a 2-0 advantage and had a home crowd to cheer them on.

It took them a while to break down Malmo but Lukas Haraslin scored a penalty in the 80th minute and Albion Rrahmani added another to seal a flawless tie.

  2. Galatasaray keeper sees redpublished at 13:33 British Summer Time 28 August

Galatasaray 0-1 Young Boys (Agg: 2-4)

The Champions League qualifiers continued last night as three ties were settled in the play-off round.

After Jose Mourinho's Fenerbahce were knocked out in the previous round, another big Turkish side has missed out on Europe's premier club competition as Galatasaray failed to overturn their first-leg deficit.

The tie was finely balanced heading into the second leg with Young Boys having a 3-2 lead. But Alan Virginius scored in the 87th minute to seal Young Boys' progression and Galatasaray keeper Fernando Muslera's reaction saw him sent off.

He seemed to shove goalscorer Virginius to the floor with the referee showing him a red card for the action.

France-based football journalist Matt Spiro has been discussing the expected move for midfielder Manuel Ugarte from Paris Saint-Germain to Manchester United.

Speaking on the Football Daily podcast, Spiro thinks that if Ugarte can rediscover his best form, he can be "absolutely tremendous" for Manchester United.

"Paris Saint-Germain according to reports [France] in the last couple of months have been looking to move him on which is surprising as much as he was very in demand and it was seen as an excellent signing when they got him last summer and he had that brilliant start," said Spiro.

"Luis Enrique has made that decision that he doesn’t want to build his midfield around Manuel Ugarte and he’s got some excellent midfielders, guys like Fabian Ruiz and Vitinha and Zaire-Emery who are perhaps more technical.

"For me, Manuel Ugarte is more of a defensive player and plays as a No.6, I don’t see him being an eight, I don’t see him bringing that much to a team going forward and that’s certainly where he played with Paris Saint-Germain to the best effect.

"It will be interesting to see what happens to Casemiro. For me, he’s very much playing in that defensive role."

France-based football journalist Matt Spiro has been discussing the expected move for midfielder Manuel Ugarte from Paris St-Germain to Manchester United.

Speaking on the Football Daily podcast, Spiro thinks that if Ugarte can rediscover his best form, he can be "absolutely tremendous" for Manchester United.

"They are signing a very tenacious midfielder," said Spiro. "They are signing a young man who is going to be really determined having lost his way a little bit in the second half of last season at PSG.

"If they are getting the player that we saw in the first weeks and first couple of months at PSG, he is going to be absolutely tremendous because he really hit the ground running at Paris, he was really impressive and like I say, he lost his way a little bit.

"I think Luis Enrique, the coach, made a decision at some point that he wanted a more technical midfield and that Ugarte perhaps in that respect wasn’t quite at the level he wanted.

"But in terms of adapting to the Premier League, in terms of his physicality, in terms of his ability to read the game and win tackles, he could be a tremendous player."

Chelsea begun contact with Victor Osimhen’s agent last night as Napoli brace themselves for an initial offer for the striker.

Osimhen, 25, has given Chelsea the greenlight over a move to Stamford Bridge this summer amid doubts over whether personal terms could be agreed.

The Blues have moved slowly to squeeze Napoli’s £113million asking price, which is based on a release clause in Osimhen’s contract signed in December 2023, and to get the Nigeria international to accept a wage on reduced terms.

This approach may prove successful as Chelsea get positive signals from Osimhen’s agent Roberto Calenda and Napoli, amid a first offer which is expected to be vastly below the asking price and include substantial wages that are linked to performance-related bonuses.

But it remains to be seen whether the first offer will be for a permanent deal or on an initial loan that could then turn into a permanent transfer.

Sources close to Chelsea also insist they have multiple striker targets, including Brentford striker Ivan Toney.

However, Osimhen is currently top of the club’s list with Romelu Lukaku preparing to move in the other direction for a fee around £30m.

Napoli also need to sell Osimhen to fund their approach for Lukaku, Manchester United’s Scott McTominay and Brighton’s Billy Gilmour as they revamp Antonio Conte’s squad.

Chelsea, meanwhile, are also looking to offload a host of players which includes goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic, winger Raheem Sterling, defenders Ben Chilwell and Trevoh Chalobah.

  10. Ex-Saints defender Danso in Roma switchpublished at 12:49 British Summer Time 28 August

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter

Former Southampton defender Kevin Danso is set to join Serie A outfit Roma.

Danso, who was born in Austria but grew up in England, had an ill-fated loan spell with the Saints in 2019-20, when he made 10 appearances, almost all away from his natural centre-back role.

The 25-year-old joined French club Lens in 2021, where he has gone to be a popular figure, playing over 100 times in a side that finished second in Ligue 1 in 2022-23. He also played for Austria at Euro 2024.

Danso has flown to the Italian capital to have a medical, amid suggestions his arrival could leave Roma open to the possibility of selling striker Tammy Abraham to raise funds.

  13. Trotters get past Shrewspublished at 12:34 British Summer Time 28 August

    Shrewsbury Town 0-2 Bolton Wanderers

Bolton fired themselves into the third round of the Carabao Cup for the first time since 2017 with victory at Shrewsbury.

Second-half goals from Jordi Osei-Tutu, his first for the club, and Dion Charles did the damage as the Trotters secured safe passage into the next stage.

Shrewsbury stopper Toby Savin produced a string of fine saves, but ultimately could not keep the visitors at bay.

Kyle Dempsey was the first to be denied by the home keeper before Scott Arfield fired against the post.

Down the other end, John Marquis saw his header kept out by Luke Southwood.

Morgan Feeney did well to scrape Dempsey’s header off the line on the stroke of half-time.

But the resistance was eventually broken when Osei-Tutu fired into the corner in the 52nd minute.

Charles ended the game as a contest 15 minutes later as he rifled into the roof of the net after John McAtee charged down a clearance.

McAtee came close to getting on the scoresheet himself when he was thwarted by a good one-handed Savin save.

  14. Graydon bags brace in Cod Army comebackpublished at 12:30 British Summer Time 28 August

    Fleetwood Town 2-1 Rotherham United

Ryan Graydon bagged a brace as League Two Fleetwood dumped Rotherham out of the EFL Cup with a fine comeback victory.

The Cod Army turned the tables on their League One opponents, who went ahead inside the first two minutes thanks to Jamie McCart’s opener at Highbury.

He reacted quickest as Joe Powell’s delivery caused chaos in the hosts’ box as he fired into the roof of the net.

Matty Virtue was kept out by Cameron Dawson as Charlie Adam’s side threatened an equaliser.

After hitting a post, the hosts levelled through Graydon’s calmly-taken 16th-minute effort.

And the 25-year-old Irishman doubled his and Town’s tally as he curled a strike beyond Dawson in the 27th minute.

After the break, goalkeeper Jay Lynch did well to keep out Sam Nombe’s strike at the near post before Mallik Wilks stung his palms.

With time running out, Wilks nodded against the crossbar with Lynch keeping out Shaun McWilliams from point-blank range as the hosts held on for a confidence-boosting win.

Sheffield Wednesday survived a scare as they came from a goal down to win 5-1 at Grimsby Town in the second round of the Carabao Cup.

Cameron McJannet gave the League Two side an early lead as he glanced home Charles Vernam's corner, and they were almost further when Kieran Green headed against the bar.

The Championship side levelled soon after the break through Ike Ugbo's low shot before he set up substitute Jamal Lowe to give the Owls the lead a minute later.

Callum Paterson secured the win with Wednesday's third before he headed in the fourth goal with eight minutes to go.

Pol Valentin finished off the job in stoppage time with his side's fifth goal as Wednesday made the third round of the EFL Cup for the fourth time in six years - a stage they have not progressed past since they made the quarter-finals during the 2015-16 season.
