Former Birmingham loan signing Jay Stansfield scored against his old club to help much-changed Fulham reach the third round of the Carabao Cup.

League One club Birmingham were hoping to produce a surprise in front of their own fans at but Fulham, who made 11 changes from the side that started last Saturday's Premier League win over Leicester, were 2-0 up after 15 minutes.

Mexico forward Raul Jimenez opened the scoring with a ninth-minute penalty after Tom Cairney's goalbound shot was handled by Alex Cochrane.

Birmingham, who won this competition as recently as 2011, fell further behind through 21-year-old Stansfield's smart curling finish which he refused to celebrate out of respect to his former club.

To their credit, Birmingham did not fold and almost pulled a goal back through Keshi Anderson's header but Timothy Castagne made a terrific clearance off the line before Willum Thor Willumsson hit the bar from a free-kick.

"I'm almost 100% sure that he's going to be our player but I cannot guarantee that because it's difficult to control the market," said Silva when asked about Stansfield's future after the game.

"The plan for him is to be part of our squad. It's really tough to be part of the 11 in the Premier League, but he's ready to fight for it."

  7. Palace secure first win of the seasonpublished at 09:46 British Summer Time 28 August

Crystal Palace overcame Norwich City at Selhurst Park to claim their first win of the season and reach the Carabao Cup third round.

Daichi Kamada opened the scoring in just the second minute with his first Palace goal, running on to Jean-Philippe Mateta’s pass before rounding goalkeeper George Long and poking into the empty net.

Norwich nearly equalised when Gabriel Forsyth struck the outside of the post and Eberechi Eze had a goal disallowed, before the home side doubled their advantage through Mateta’s acrobatic finish 11 minutes into the second half.

Mateta made it 3-0 with a thumping finish from Eze's delivery midway through the second half, before Eze got his name on the scoresheet at the end of a marauding run.

The result was harsh on Norwich, who also went close through Ante Crnac and Marcelino Nunez in the first half and reached the interval in the ascendancy.

Swap? I’d swap Ashley Young for a little boy I saw chasing a balloon on the beach yesterday. One from the past with one for the future.

New signing Iliman Ndiaye scored on his full debut as Everton put aside their poor start to the Premier League season to beat Doncaster and reach the third round of the Carabao Cup.

Having made substitute appearances in the defeats by Brighton and Tottenham, Senegal international Ndiaye - a £15m summer signing from Marseille - capped an impressive first start for the club by slotting in Everton’s second in the 74th minute.

He collected the ball 35 yards out, turned to drive at goal, skipped around defender Joseph Olowu and completed a calm finish.

His start was one of six changes made by manager Sean Dyche, including full debuts for Jesper Lindstrom and Jake O’Brien.

After Millwall’s woeful performance in the EFL Cup last night I’d swap our whole squad for Leyton Orient’s.

  11. Leyton Orient stun Millwallpublished at 09:20 British Summer Time 28 August

    Millwall 0-1 Leyton Orient

League One side Leyton Orient claimed a surprise win at Championship hosts Millwall as Dan Agyei's first-half strike earned them a place in the third round of the Carabao Cup.

In the first meeting between the London teams since 2010, the lively Agyei struck from the edge of the penalty area into the bottom corner following a slick sequence of passing for his second goal in this season's competition.

Much-changed Millwall did not test opposition goalkeeper Zach Hemming as Neil Harris' side, who are winless in the second tier, failed to score for a second consecutive game.

Orient have lost all three of their league matches in 2023-24 but have now progressed beyond the second round of the EFL Cup for only the fourth time in 33 seasons.

Agyei's fine finish early on proved to be the only shot on target from two sides who are struggling for early-season form.

  13. Roles given red cardpublished at 09:07 British Summer Time 28 August

    Brighton 4-0 Crawley

Jay Williams did not see red for his tackle on Matt O'Riley but Crawley did go down to 10 men in the match.

Replacement Jack Roles was sent off for a challenge on Yasin Ayari in injury time.

The win, which secured Brighton's progression to the third round and maintained Hurzeler's 100% record in charge of the Seagulls, came courtesy of goals from Simon Adingra, Jeremy Sarmiento, Adam Webster and Mark O'Mahony.

  14. Crawley boss apologises for tacklepublished at 09:01 British Summer Time 28 August

    Brighton 4-0 Crawley

Crawley manager Scott Lindsey was asked about Jay Williams' tackle on Matt O'Riley after the game and he apologised.

He told Sky Sports: "Maybe we were a bit aggressive, maybe the referee missed it (the challenge) and I would like to apologise.

"I wouldn't want anyone to be hurt. We are both passionate about the game and we wish Brighton all the best in the next round."

  15. Brighton win but O'Riley debut cut shortpublished at 08:55 British Summer Time 28 August

    Brighton 4-0 Crawley

Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler criticised a "ridiculous foul" which he said should not be "part of football" after new signing Matt O'Riley limped out of the Seagulls' Carabao Cup win over Crawley.

O'Riley, who only joined for £25m from Celtic 24 hours earlier, had his debut ended by a late, crunching tackle by Crawley captain Jay Williams in the sixth minute.

After lengthy treatment, the Denmark international midfielder had to be helped by two physios as he limped from the field.

Hurzeler said the left ankle injury "does not look good".

"You can’t tackle like this," said the German. "It is a tackle where you take a risk of an injury of another player."

Williams was not booked for that challenge. He was booed throughout the first half and again when he was substituted in the second half.

    Emma Sanders
BBC Sport Senior Women's Football Reporter

Manchester United Women's pursuit of Dutch goalkeeper Lize Kop from Leicester City has not progressed.

It's looking likely that Kop will remain a Leicester City player this season despite there still being a few weeks left in the WSL transfer window.

United made Kop a key target following the departure of England's Mary Earps to Paris St-Germain but have not been able to agree a fee with Leicester or persuade them to sell.

As far as Leicester are concerned, she is not for sale and they are preparing for next season with her in their plans.

United still want a goalkeeper in this window.
