Two goals from Mileta Rajovic ensured Watford reached the third round of the Carabao Cup for the first time in three years as they beat Plymouth Argyle 2-0 at Vicarage Road.

The Hornets took the lead when Rajovic's flicked finish snuck through the legs to Argyle's debutant goalkeeper Dan Grimshaw as they had the better of the first period.

Grimshaw made amends with a string of fine saves either side of the break as Watford continued to have the upper hand, but he was finally beaten when Rajovic volleyed in from eight yards inside the final 20 minutes.

Ryan Hardie hit the Watford post inside the final 10 minutes as Wayne Rooney's side struggled to create chances.

  2. Saddlers storm back to upset Terrierspublished at 11:45 British Summer Time 28 August

    Walsall 3-2 Huddersfield Town

League Two Walsall pulled off an Carabao Cup upset over League One high-flyers Huddersfield Town, coming from two goals down to win 3-2 against 10 men.

Josh Koroma put the visitors ahead with a low shot to the bottom corner from just outside the box on 16 minutes.

Huddersfield centre-back Matty Pearson received his marching orders three minutes before the break for a last-man foul on Jack Earing just outside the box.

Walsall were awarded a penalty for Jaheim Headley’s blatant push on Ronan Maher on 50 minutes, but Huddersfield keeper Chris Maxwell went the right way to deny Nathan Lowe.

Just minutes later defender Josh Ruffels headed home from a corner to double the Terriers’ lead in his first competitive outing for nine months following a groin injury.

Lowe made up for his poor penalty by firing sharply into the bottom corner off a half-cleared free-kick to pull one back,

The striker then equalised off Josh Gordon’s flick-on from an Albert Adomah cross, reacting quickly to reach the loose ball and blast past Maxwell.

Walsall completed their comeback on 77 minutes, with Huddersfield substitute Michal Helik unfortunate to deflect into his own goal trying to cut out Liam Gordon’s cross.

Finally, Wales manager Craig Bellamy on his coaching staff: "They are definitely the people I wanted. Obviously Dave had to work hard as well, so a lot of credit goes to Dave Adams for his patience and being able to come up with a certain amount of money for them as well, which is never easy, but to be fair they were all willing, they were all ambitious and they were able to see what I was able to see with the group and where we feel we can take them. The group, as a coaching staff, I couldn’t be happier.

"There’s a lot of opinions which I like. We believe in a certain way of how we see football and I’ve seen a lot of debates over the last few weeks, there’s no right or wrong way to play this game, I’m certainly not going to say how I do my business is the right way, there’s no right or wrong way. It’s what I believe in and the coaching staff have the same beliefs, which helps.

"We all compliment each other, different backgrounds, different educations into football, so I believe bringing into together will only benefit the players."

  5. 'Ramsey will be captain'published at 11:31 British Summer Time 28 August

    Wales

    Aaron RamseyImage source, Getty Images

Wales manager Craig Bellamy on whether Aaron Ramsey will remain Wales captain: "You’re not presuming too much, he will be captain, he’s been captain before. I didn’t see any reason to change that for the time being.

"I understand the role of captaincies, I was captain for Wales through all of the age groups and into the senior team. I do understand it, but I like a leadership group, I like a number of captains, I like a group. I like a lot of senior players who have a lot of input and I like to be able to communicate with them as well, tactically but also how I want a squad to look and how I want them to behave and they play a big role in that it is theirs.

"They are the ones who own it. Also, what I’d ask for them to do on the pitch, I’d like their input with that. We have a certain level of non-negotiables, I certainly do, but I do like feedback.

"I know Aaron might be the captain, but I see a number of captains if I’m being honest."

  6. 'I've loved the first couple of months'published at 11:27 British Summer Time 28 August

    Wales

    Craig BellamyImage source, Getty Images

Wales manager Craig Bellamy on his first couple of months in the job: "Settling in, the first couple of weeks was new. I spent a bit of time trying to adjust, obviously not being on a pitch every day, which over the last seven years has been what I’ve been used to.

"But I’ve got to be honest, the last month/three weeks, the more you are looking at the squad, the more you are watching games, getting your staff together as well, I’ve really loved the last few weeks. I like how it’s setting up the support as well from Dave, Noel, RG, it’s really helped. Words of advice at the right time from those guys has really been important but it’s been great.

"To be able to use a lot of time travelling, meeting people, how people have been with me taking this role has been quite humbling. The amount of congratulations, the amount of feeling I’ve felt from the public has been humbling. I’m beyond grateful for that. I’ve loved it, it’s been great. We’ve got busy schedules.

"Tomorrow is a good one, we go up north, up to Anglesey and just getting to meet people as well and travel the country. I haven’t done since I was a youngster, maybe this is the last time I’ll be in Wales so for this period now, I really want to find peace with that, travel as much of Wales and see as many people as I can and really take advantage of that."

Ivan Toney playing for BrentfordImage source, PA Media

BBC Sport football news reporter Nick Mashiter says Ivan Toney "has got a lot of thinking to do" in the remaining days of the transfer window.

Does he stay at Brentford and run his contract out, or does he make the switch to Saudi Arabia?

"You have to look at the long-term prospect and if he wants to stay in the England squad then we have seen what happened to Jordan Henderson," Mashiter said on BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast.

"The standards will be lower over there [Saudi Arabia], but if he goes to Chelsea then he is still here playing at a top level and will be someone Lee Carsley will consider.

"But there is still every chance he stays at Brentford and sees his contract out. Then he can have the pick of the clubs next summer without the £50m price tag around his neck.

"He has got a lot of thinking to do, and while he is still playing at Brentford and in the Premier League, he is still in a really good position. It should not be overlooked that if he chooses to stay he has still got the opportunity to impress and have the pick of many sides next summer."

Former Sheffield United defender Chris Basham has announced his retirement as he continues to recover from a broken leg he sustained against Fulham last year.

Basham, 36, spent a decade with the Blades before suffering the horror injury at Craven Cottage in October and departed Bramall Lane at the end of last season when his contract expired.

"I would like to thank everyone who has made my career in the game a special one, including those that taught me important lessons.

"I look forward to what's ahead and recovering in the best possible way."

Barnsley survived a late rally from the visitors to reach the third round of the competition for just the third time in 15 seasons.

Swap De Bruyne for Salah? That’s bonkers. De Bruyne is just a cog in a very good Pep machine. He’s nowhere near as good for Belgium. Salah is a god. I’d swap Rodri for Endō and that’s about it. I like Walker but he’s too old for a fair swap with Bradley who’s gonna be around for the next 12-15 yrs at top level. Maybe Foden for Mac Alister but one’s a World Cup winner and one couldn’t even light up the Euros for one game. So I’d probably only swap Bellingham for Trent.
