Championship promotion favourites Ipswich Town's stuttering start to the season continued as they were beaten 1-0 by Preston North End at Deepdale.

Milutin Osmajic's early penalty proved the difference as Town fell to a first league defeat after successive draws.

Despite having over 70% of possession and 15 shots at goal, Ipswich once again failed to click in attack and managed only two attempts on target.

Victory for Preston is Paul Heckingbottom's side's second this term and lifts them to sixth place in the early standings.

Preston were awarded their spot-kick inside 10 minutes when Osmajic was fouled by Jacob Greaves.

He got up and sent Alex Palmer the wrong way, firing low to the left side of the net for his third goal of the season.

It was hard for Ipswich to get going, despite dominating possession. Palmer's quick thinking averted trouble after a short backpass, as the home side threatened on the break.

Thierry Small was particularly busy for Preston on the left, but it was yet more flat play from Ipswich which defined the first half.

George Hirst squandered their first real opportunity six minutes before half-time, unable to direct Jack Clarke's early cross goalwards after being found in the area.

The visitors stepped up the pressure after the break and, without carving out a clear cut chance, sensed a leveller. Small's brilliantly timed challenge denied Clarke in the area as he looked to shoot just shy of the hour.

New signing Kasey McAteer was summoned for Ipswich and failed to hit the target with an opportunity after 70 minutes. Almost immediately, Small then failed to capitalise at the other end.

But Ipswich's moment never came and Preston held on for a huge win, going back-to-back for the first time since January and securing a first league clean sheet since March.

'Can't concede goals like that and be successful' - reaction

Preston boss Paul Heckingbottom told BBC Radio Lancashire: "We spoke last season about winning when second best. We never won that way. Ipswich are a very good side and we had to stay strong.

"Forget the negativity. Why are we talking about what other clubs are spending? If that was important we'd have lost the game today.

"They are bringing £14m off the bench, they've got unbelievable talent that didn't get on the pitch.

"If that was the be-all and end-all we'd have lost. Quit moaning and focus on what we can do. We've signed good characters - we don't win today if we don't sign good people. Everyone connected with Preston should be proud of every player."

Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna speaking to BBC Radio Suffolk: "Really frustrated and annoyed by the result. Our supporters have travelled a long way; we wanted to get the win after a couple of hard-fought draws and we didn't do it, so that is the overriding emotion.

"We gave away a goal which we can't concede at this level. We won't be successful if we concede goals like that. That is clear, the type of performance we are going to face we needed to be stronger in the few occasions we had to defend.

"Before and after we had control of the game, there was some nice passages to our play, but we didn't create as many chances as we would like.

"The connections in the team aren't strong enough. I knew it would be a difficult summer - we need to improve and quickly."
