We're very nearly done for the day so let's recap the day's big transfer story and bring it all together.

Newcastle have rejected an opening bid from Liverpool for Alexander Isak.

The Magpies value the Sweden international at about £150m, with the Reds' offer falling below that figure.

There has been no confirmation as to the level of Liverpool's bid but there are reports it is worth £110m plus add-ons.

  4. Manchester United have 'wasted so much money'published at 14:47 British Summer Time 1 August

    BBC Football Daily

Manchester United have found it difficult to offload four of their players this summer - Anthony, Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho and Tyrell Malacia - and could be left with a problem.

"I think United risk being left with a lot of players at the end of the window that they are going to have to sell very cheaply because nobody wants them or they've been left in a situation where they're desperate to get money in," ESPN's Mark Ogden told the Football Daily podcast.

"The four players mentioned, I can see them all being there at the final week of August or final days of August with United are basically shaking their tins to clubs saying 'give us something for these guys'.

"That just shows you how badly it's been run.

"We say it all the time - they've wasted so much money.

"It's not like Manchester United haven't spent money but they've just wasted a huge amount and they pay huge wages out to these players."

  5. United need a 'proven seasoned goal scorer'published at 14:45 British Summer Time 1 August

ESPN's Mark Ogden on BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast on if Manchester United need a player with potential or someone who is ready and has played Premier League football:

"United over recent years have taken too many gambles on young players, Rasmus Hojlund being one and Joshua Zirkzee being the other.

"They had a very young strike force last year and it showed - they could barely score a goal.

"I think people are worried that he [Sesko] could be another Rasmus Hojlund but I think Sesko might be a bit more developed. He's had a bit more time in a top league than Hojlund.

"Hojlund basically had a season at Atalanta whereas Sesko has had a couple years in the Bundesliga and Champions League experience when he was playing for RB Salzburg.

"So he's a better option but I think what United need is a proven seasoned goal scorer. But their view is that the investment in Sesko is a better and more sensible long term option but you need to win tomorrow and today rather than in the long term.

"Certainly at Man United they can't keep taking punts for four/five years down the line they have to start winning now."

The rules on PSR have really made a noticeable difference this summer. The established elite seem to be able to spend what they like whereas the two closest teams to breaking into this (Newcastle and Villa) have had their hands completely tied. It's quite concerning for all other Prem teams.

  7. Manchester United target Seskopublished at 14:43 British Summer Time 1 August

    Benjamin SeskoImage source, Getty Images

Ruben Amorim's rebuild at Manchester United continues with Benjamin Sesko as their latest target but what does the Slovenian striker have to offer?

ESPN's Mark Ogden dissected the Red Devils' interest on the BBC Football Daily podcast: "Sesko is a player that they [United] looked at before.

"They looked at him in January 2023 when he moved from RB Salzburg to RB Leipzig and they've monitored him ever since.

"He's now the next guy on the rank, he's got a good pedigree they decided that he's a better option than Ollie Watkins.

"Sesko is 22, playing in the Bundesliga but there were doubts over Sesko. Other clubs have looked at him but haven't taken the punt. Arsenal were very keen but decided not too, Chelsea had a look too.

"So United are going for a guy who's probably fourth on their list but they are in a situation where they need to find a proven goalscorer and Rasmus Hojlund isn't cutting it so Sesko is the guy that they're looking at.

"United are fairly confident that if they can get the funds in place, then Sesko is favoured a moved to Old Trafford, but it's not as simple as that because United have got to get the money."

Newcastle should seriously consider a cash + player bid from Liverpool. It is clear that Nunez will be surplus if they get Isak so why not offer him to go the other way? Ultimately they should cash in on Isak if he doesn’t want to be there.

  9. What can Dibling offer Everton?published at 14:40 British Summer Time 1 August

Tyler Dibling gets rave reviews when I speak to senior players and ex-players about him. They see a young English talent who has great potential and huge natural ability.

Tyler has great balance, poise, good power and strength for his age, the ball sticks to his feet when he’s dribbling, and he can win free-kicks by sucking defenders in only to shift the ball away from them in a Jack Grealish style.

Last season was a steep learning curve for him and a tough campaign for a teenager to deal with. He was brilliant at times, but as the season faded for Saints it also faded for Tyler as niggling injuries impacted him, as well as the vagaries of trying to play at the highest level week in week out, which few 18 year-olds can do.

He is a quiet, thoughtful teenager who doesn’t look for the centre stage, but his talent is good enough to demand it at some point in the future if he keeps growing as he has. I’ve said all summer Saints should be trying to get £40-50m for him, so we’ll see what they accept at the end of the day IF he wants to go to Everton of course.

He went to Chelsea as a youngster but didn’t like it and came back to Saints. It says a lot about what is important to him.

  10. Moyes' return still cause for optimismpublished at 14:39 British Summer Time 1 August

Whilst uncertainty over what next seasons squad may look like could cause panic amongst Everton fans, there are still reasons to be optimistic.

Having been reappointed as manager on January 11th, Moyes lost his first game at home to Aston Villa, but it wasn't a sign of things to come.

Not only did Moyes comfortably save the Toffees from relegation, but if the table had started on his return to Goodison Park, Everton would have finished ninth having secured 31 points in his 19 Premier League games in charge.

And speaking of their stadium, Everton bid farewell to Goodison Park at the end of the last campaign and will begin next season at the brand new Hill Dickinson Stadium, a sign of a club looking forward rather than behind.

There is an uneasy sense of panic already starting to spread across Everton fans.

Many stayed up until the small hours in the UK to watch their side take on West Ham in the second round of the Premier League Summer Series but now they face not only being shattered in work, but also the fear this side is not equipped for the new season.

It appears David Moyes agrees. He used his press conference after the 2-1 defeat to send a clear message to the owners. After all, the manager has already admitted this is the biggest rebuild of a squad he's had in his career.

"I've never had one of these times," said Moyes. "In the past, I have had to sign a lot of players, but I've never had to do so many in one window."

Everton have had 12 players through the exit door and, with under three weeks to go until the first Premier League game at Leeds United, they are light in almost all positions on the pitch.

Everton's bid for Southampton winger Tyler Dibling is perhaps part of an admission that it will be difficult to sign Malick Fofana from Lyon.

Fofana has not completely ruled out Everton but after reports talks were at an "advanced" stage - there is a clear reluctance from the Belgium international to move to Merseyside.

European powerhouses like Chelsea, Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool have previously expressed an interest, which has led to the 20-year-old to sit tight, assess him options and stall on any move to Everton.

  14. Ndoye and Elanga's similar stylespublished at 14:33 British Summer Time 1 August

    Tom McCoy
    BBC Sport journalist

Elanga only ranked 50th for the number of dribbles attempted last season, partly reflecting Forest’s counter-attacking style. But when the Reds did get him on the ball he was devastatingly effective, galloping into space on the break and gaining an average of 10.8m per carry, the highest figure of any top-flight player with at least 500 minutes.

Ndoye looks well placed to fill that role for Forest. He recorded 125 of what Opta define as ‘long progressive carries’, which means dribbling forward 10m or more. That was the second highest total by a winger or attacking midfielder in Serie A last term.

Where Elanga stands out is in terms of creativity, registering 21 Premier League assists over the past two seasons, equivalent to one every 258 minutes. Ndoye has just eight assists over the same period, one every 626 minutes.

Forest's new signing isn’t the finished article but if he can add a little more end product to his game he could prove a more than adequate replacement for Elanga.

Can you imagine if Liverpool move away from Isak and instead go in on Sesko? Half the price and bags of potential. To lose out on Ekitike and Sesko whilst still having Isak on the books could be seen as one of the worst windows of all time.

  16. Can versatile Ndoye fill Elanga’s shoes at Forest?published at 14:30 British Summer Time 1 August

    Tom McCoy
    BBC Sport journalist

Just a few days after tying key man Morgan Gibbs-White down to a new contract, Nottingham Forest concluded another important piece of business yesterday, paying a fee reportedly worth an initial £34.6m to Bologna for Switzerland international Dan Ndoye.

Forest were in need of a new winger, having lost Anthony Elanga to Newcastle. But can Ndoye replicate the Swede’s success at the City Ground?

Both players can operate anywhere across the forward line. Elanga made 57% of his Premier League appearances for Forest on the right but played almost a quarter of his games on the left and also had some success playing up front.

Ndoye’s Serie A experience has been almost equally split between the left (41%) and right wing (40%), with occasional outings at wing-back. He further underlined his versatility by starting four different roles in five games at Euro 2024, playing at right wing, centre-forward, left wing and right wing-back.

Dan Ndoye is Forest's third major signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Igor Jesus and Jair Cunha from Botafogo.

"It is a really exciting time at Forest and I knew straight away that I wanted to be a part of the project," he said.

"It's a really ambitious team with a fantastic history and I can't wait to get started."

The winger made his international debut for Switzerland in 2022 and has gone on to earn 22 caps for his country, scoring three times.

Having sold Anthony Elanga to Newcastle United, Forest managed to convince Morgan Gibbs-White to sign a new deal at the club.

The England midfielder had looked set to join Tottenham after the club activated a £60m release clause in his previous deal.

If Liverpool want to pay over the odds then let them, £100m is crazy money that should be for a few special players and Isak isn't one of them. Newcastle can't spend without selling so they need the deal as always happens at smaller clubs.

Nottingham Forest signed Switzerland winger Dan Ndoye from Bologna on Thursday.

Ndoye has signed a five-year deal at the City Ground to bring his two-year stint in Italy to an end.

The 24-year-old scored nine times in 41 appearances for the Serie A side last season.

He scored the only goal in the Coppa Italia final win against AC Milan in May, helping Bologna to their first major trophy in over 50 years.

Signing a centre back is far more important than signing Isak for Liverpool. An injury to Van Dijk or Konate and there is no cover. As good as Gomez is, his injury record means he can’t be relied on. Getting Guehi over the line is crucial.

    Rahul Bhuhi-Siva, Maidenhead

I really hope Liverpool look to sign a CB. Guehi would be a great addition. With Quansah sold and Konate exploring options, we need to strengthen in that area. Attack is sorted (even without Isak) however defensively I am slightly worried.
