Alexander Isak is training alone at former club Real Sociedad amid continued uncertainty around his Newcastle United future.

The Sweden striker was left out of Newcastle's squad for their pre-season tour of Asia, with the club saying he had a "minor" thigh issue.

Isak wants to explore a move away from the Magpies, with Liverpool interested in signing the former Borussia Dortmund striker.

The 25-year-old joined Newcastle in a £60m move from La Liga club Real Sociedad in 2022.

Sources have told BBC Sport he is using the Spanish club's training ground facilities, but is not training with the team.

It is understood he asked to use the facilities and the club were happy to let him do so outside of first team training hours.

    Newcastle have declined to comment.

  10. Number 7s - Wirtz following in footsteps of Liverpool legendspublished at 10:51 British Summer Time 1 August

In taking the number seven, £100m man Florian Wirtz joins an impressive list of Liverpool legends to have worn the shirt before him - most of them fitting the profile of creative, attacking players.

Perhaps most notable is Kenny Dalglish, arguably Liverpool's greatest ever player, who joined in 1977 and played in the number seven through his time at the club, scoring scoring 172 goals in 515 games as he won a whole host of trophies.

Dalglish inherited the shirt from Kevin Keegan, who had six trophy-laden years at the club before signing off by winning the 1977 European Cup.

Going even further back, the iconic Billy Liddell and club-record appearance maker Ian Callaghan had seven on their backs.

Peter Beardsley wore it with distinction in the late 80s, Steve McManaman had it for three years in the 90s before leaving for Real Madrid and Luis Suarez took it in 2011, going on to score 83 goals in 133 appearances for the Reds.

James Milner wore it as Liverpool won the Premier League and Champions League in his time at Anfield before Luis Diaz claimed it, adding his name to the club's title-winning number sevens - something Wirtz will no doubt hope to do in the coming years...

Newcastle should set a deadline for Liverpool to match their asking price for Isak and, if they haven’t met it in time, shut the door. With Liverpool’s recent transfer tactics, it wouldn’t surprise me if they put it off till the last week, just to leave Newcastle in a predicament.

Palhina looks like a solid signing to me. Last year we looked very weak in midfield and it costs us a lot of goals/games. A strong holding midfielder with a bag full of experience is just what the doctor ordered

  17. Pros and cons of Palhinhapublished at 10:06 British Summer Time 1 August

    Matthew Hobbs
    BBC Sport

Tottenham are reportedly closing in on the loan signing of Bayern Munich midfielder Joao Palhina. The destructive number six joined the German giants in a £42.3m deal last summer and called it “the happiest day of my life” – although the move has since soured due to injury and a lack of playing time.

Palhinha has started just 10 games in all competitions for Bayern in the last year, prompting a potential move back to the Premier League where he excelled as a destructive number six during two seasons with Fulham between 2022 and 2024.

The 34-cap Portugal international proved to be a real bargain after swapping Sporting Lisbon for Craven Cottage for around £17m, comfortably topping the Premier League rankings for tackles with a total of 300 during his initial two-season stint – 109 more than any other player. He also ranked sixth for interceptions (92).

His combative style of play, however, does carry risks. The 30-year-old received 27 yellow cards across 2022-23 and 2023-24 – at least five more than anyone else.

Elliott (09:20), Palhinha and Gibbs-White play in different positions. One’s a holding midfielder and the other a creative midfielder. We’ve been crying out for a Palhinha-type player for seasons. Experienced in the Prem and an experienced player to help the youthful squad along. What’s there to be angry about?

  20. Palhinha's career so farpublished at 09:36 British Summer Time 1 August

Joao Palhinha came through the academy of Sporting in Portugal, making his first senior appearance for their B team in 2014.

He enjoyed loans with Moreirense and Belenenses before returning to Sporting and making his debut for the first team in January 2017.

In 2018, he was once again loaned out, this time to Braga - where he spent two seasons and helped them win the 2019-20 Portuguese League Cup.

He really cemented himself as a regular with Sporting upon his return to the club in 2020 under then manager Ruben Amorim.

Palhinha was named in the Primeira Liga Team of the Year as Sporting won the title in 2020-21 and in that same season, he made his international debut with Portugal.

He earned a move to the Premier League with Fulham the following year and would go on to make 79 appearances, scoring eight times and providing one assist before making the move to Bayern Munich last summer.
