    What a night for Grimsby.

This night will live long in the memory for their fans, but for Manchester United supporters bedtime can't come soon enough.

Speaking of which, time for us to wrap things up.

    Goodnight!

  2. 'How can Amorim have faith in Onana after that?'published at 23:29 BST 27 August

FT: Grimsby Town 2-2 Man Utd (Grimsby win 12-11 on pens)

    Chris Sutton
Former Premier League striker on BBC Radio 5 Live at Blundell Park

On if Manchester United needed a new number one goalkeeper this summer:

I think everybody would agree with that. Bayindir looks a bag of nerves from crosses and Onana had his opportunity tonight and there's lapses of concentration.

I don't know if he thought he could rock up here tonight and it would be a breeze but it was anything but. How can Ruben Amorim have faith in Onana after that performance? But again he wasn't the only one.

FT: Grimsby Town 2-2 Man Utd (Grimsby win 12-11 on pens)

    Phil Jones
Former Manchester United defender on Sky Sports

In games of football like this when you play lower league opposition if you don't do the basics well you are going to come unstuck.

When he [Amorim] changed and put Mason Mount in that position they still went with a back five but they were building with a back five against Grimsby who were sitting on the edge of their own box.

Your spare man was in build up when you needed the spare man higher up the pitch to make an overload out wide or through the middle.

Grimsby stifled United. They couldn't gain a foothold. In the first 15 minutes you didn't see United step into their half.

That game had nothing to do with tactics. You have to go into games like that and be alive from the first whistle.

You are playing against lesser opposition who will be shouting and cheering for every ball.

World of difference between the two managers in their post match interviews. Grimsby manager could convince me to follow him off a cliff. Amorim I wouldn't even follow in a conga line.

  7. A sign of weakness if Amorim changes approach now?published at 23:19 BST 27 August

FT: Grimsby Town 2-2 Man Utd (Grimsby win 12-11 on pens)

    Phil Jones
Former Manchester United defender on Sky Sports

On if Amorim would see it as a sign of weakness to change his system at this stage of his tenure:

Yes 100%. Anybody who is that set on a system and formation, and that is fine, that is what he was brought in to do, if he changes now it will be seen as a sign of weakness for sure.

In a back three if you don't get the press right it has a knock on effect all over the pitch. All of a sudden in two or three passes you are so disjointed all over the pitch.

In the Arsenal game on and off the ball they were very good, you could see an improvement from last season, no doubt. Against Fulham they were better and could have been two or three up in the opening 15 minutes, but tonight it was not good enough.

Amorim sounds like a man who has lost his belief tonight. It also sounds as though he thinks the players have lost their belief. I'm not one for chopping and changing managers, but I cannot ever see this formation working for United in the Premier League especially. Any primer midfield duo from United over the past 30+ years would struggle with being overrun with the formation that Amorim is wedded to. Sometimes, you just have to acknowledge things aren't working and move forward with a new idea.

  9. 'I'm really sorry to the fans'published at 23:11 BST 27 August

FT: Grimsby Town 2-2 Man Utd (Grimsby win 12-11 on pens)

    Manchester United

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim speaking to Sky Sports on whether his side are making the same mistakes from last season: "I think that is the problem. When you lose but see something new, it's different. When you see something like today, it's hard to talk about that. I just want to say I'm really sorry for the fans. The support they gave me, the support that with all the support they help the team. I have nothing to say. I'm really sorry."

On how he can solve the problems: "I think they gave the response on the pitch today, so I don't need total about that. We have a game at the weekend, then we have two weeks and we will solve things out."

On the goalkeeping issue: "With all due respect, when you lose to a fourth division team, it's not the goalkeeper. It's everything. It's the environment, it's the way we face the competition. We know that we are in the moment everything people will pay attention to everything. It's going to be massive every detail. We show the performance today, so my players spoke, for me, really loud."

  10. 'No flex' at all to Amorim's tacticspublished at 23:09 BST 27 August

FT: Grimsby Town 2-2 Man Utd (Grimsby win 12-11 on pens)

    Jobi McAnuff
Ex-Crystal Palace winger on Sky Sports

How many times was the spare man Matthijs de Ligt in the build up. With the greatest respect to him you should have an attacking player joining in and getting into the box.

It just seems crazy that he is wedded to this formation at all costs, in any circumstances in a match that he [Ruben Amorim] is almost forcing people into positions no matter the state of the game. It is baffling that there is no flex at all.

  11. 'You expect the lineup to be enough'published at 23:08 BST 27 August

FT: Grimsby Town 2-2 Man Utd (Grimsby win 12-11 on pens)

    Dion Dublin
Former Aston Villa and Manchester United striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

Going back to the starting lineup, Ruben Amorim makes the changes and I am expecting Ugarte, Mainoo, Amad and Cunha to be enough.

With the right application, if they had played the game one and two touch, at the right tempo, they might have got over the line.

But they got out-fought. I found the first half pretty embarrassing as an ex-Manchester United player.

Maybe Manchester United should have been more patient after the Ferguson era. They should have been patient with David Moyes, but they were just too greedy and unrealistic. It’s been downhill since that decision, and it’s probably not over yet.

  13. 'We were completely lost'published at 23:03 BST 27 August

FT: Grimsby Town 2-2 Man Utd (Grimsby win 12-11 on pens)

    Manchester United

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim speaking to Sky Sports: "In the end, it doesn't matter if we recover or not, it's the signs the team gave during the game, the beginning of the game. I think the best team won, the only team that was on the pitch. The best players lose because one team can win against any group of players, and I think the team and the players spoke really loud today, so that's it. We lost, the best team won."

On what he means by that: "I think it's really clear what they spoke, so let's move on from this day and I think it was clear for everybody what happened today."

"The way we start the game without any intensity, all the idea of the pressure, we were completely lost and that's why I think they spoke really loud."

And where was Amorim? Head in hands behind his staff. Not the actions of a good coach.

    Jim B

That has to be the bow out for Amorim. On paper we have a decent side playing a different formation to his trusted 5-2-3 and the time has surely come for someone who may understand that, or is willing to adapt. Otherwise I can only see Man Utd going further downhill.

    Steve

Disgrace that Amorim couldn't/wouldn't watch the penalties. I don't care how superstitious you are, you're manager of one of the biggest clubs in the world, you need to show visible leadership.

  15. 'Pressure well and truly on Amorim now'published at 22:57 BST 27 August

FT: Grimsby Town 2-2 Man Utd (Grimsby win 12-11 on pens)

    Chris Sutton
Former Premier League striker on BBC Radio 5 Live at Blundell Park

If I was Ruben Amorim tonight there is not a prayer that I would have made eight changes. I would have played my strongest team, try to put the game to bed and then make changes. That was an error from him in my book. He will struggle to come back from this. The pressure this season is well and truly on now. If I'm him I am officially worried.

  16. 'Months of hard work encompassed tonight'published at 22:54 BST 27 August

FT: Grimsby Town 2-2 Man Utd (Grimsby win 12-11 on pens)

    Grimsby Town

Grimsby Town boss David Artell speaking to ITV on how he sums up the night: "A long penalty shoot-out. I said to Sean halfway through the shoot-out, first round last year, we beat Bradford 9-8 on penalties. I said to him before the penalty shoot-out started, look, what's a penalty shoot-out? It's a technical thing, it's a psychological thing. You've got brilliant techniques. We work hard every day to get better. It's a thing above the front door. Another chance to get better and this group want to get better. The techniques are fine, they're going to feel nervous walking up, butterflies. Don't worry about that.

"This is an accumulation of 15 months, 18 months, all encompassed in one night. Look, they're an unbelievable team, Manchester United. They've got an unbelievable manager and they're on the right track, you can see that.

"We've got an unbelievable group of players as well, who want to play for this football club, live in the area and want to get better every day."
