A lot of chat about Kiwior but Mateta has become a wonderful player, and he's an absolute unit! Great stuff, JP.

Arsenal have four players on Eberechi Eze and not one of them can get the ball successfully off him as Palace are awarded a free-kick.

Eze sees David Raya off his line and goes for goal from over 40 yards but the ball sails well over the bar.

  3. 'Brentford defence not blessed with pace and Isak has lots of it'published at 19:50 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December

    Newcastle 0-0 Brentford

    Chris Waddle
Former Newcastle & England winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

Alexander Isak will be massive for Newcastle tonight. The three Brentford centre halves Ben Mee, Ethan Pinnock and Nathan Collins aren't blessed with great pace and Isak has a lot of it. If he gets level with these defenders he will run away from them.

Something must have happened to Brentford defender Sepp van den Berg in the warm-up because he was replaced by Nathan Collins in the XI.

They are still warming up on the pitch before the late kick-off at St Mary's Stadium, where it is bottom of the Premier League against top of the Premier League for a place in the semi-finals of the League Cup.

Liverpool have 31 more points than Southampton, who have played one more game.

Trent Alexander-Arnold is captaining the Reds on what is his 300th start for the club.

Will he still be at Anfield next season?

Brentford are wearing a Palermo-style pink shirt today.

Newcastle are playing in their standard white and black stripes (sounds weird when you say it that way round).

  12. CLOSE!published at 19:45 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December

    Arsenal 0-1 Crystal Palace

Another Arsenal mistake as Gabriel Jesus gives the ball away and Ismaila Sarr surges towards the box before hitting a low effort that David Raya has to push away.

Really good start by Crystal Palace, who are unbeaten in their last five.

Eddierocksteady: I can see the back page headlines tomorrow: 'Mateta Sinks Arteta'. The ignominous irony of thinking you can compete without a proper No. 9. Poetic.

  14. 'Boos for Trossard'published at 19:42 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December

    Arsenal 0-1 Crystal Palace

    Alex Howell

Lots of boos for Leandro Trossard from the travelling Palace fans as he used to play for their rivals Brighton.

Stephen: Hard to see Kiwior lasting much longer at Arsenal - very underwhelming in Gabriel’s absence and clearly wouldn’t be playing if Calafiori was fit

Brentford are still on this journey to becoming this complete football club. They are a massive name in the Premier League already and Thomas Frank's reputation is only going up and up.

You can see the players enjoy playing for him. He looks like a joy to play for.

They will go to Newcastle tonight with so much belief that they can get into the semi-finals.

Kieran Tierney charges into space down the left before crossing. The ball strikes the hand of Trevoh Chalobah and Tierney appeals for a penalty but nothing is given.

Still, they have a corner and maybe a chance for another set-piece goal?

Another long ball is initially problematic for the Arsenal defence but this time they are, eventually, able to clear.

The Gunners certainly look a bit unsettled at the back.
