  1. Tzolis 'wonder strike' helps Brugge beat Sturm Grazpublished at 10:43 British Summer Time

    Sturm Graz 0-1 Club Brugge

Christos Tzolis' stunning first-half goal helped Club Brugge to a narrow Champions League win at Sturm Graz.

The Greek winger, 22, expertly controlled Raphael Onyedika's cross-field pass and then curled a fine effort across home goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen into the net off the far post.

It provided a welcome three points for the Belgians, who were the better side throughout after bouncing back from their opening-game defeat to Borussia Dortmund.

However, it was a disappointing night for the Austrian champions, who failed to trouble Simon Mignolet in the Brugge goal, and also lost to French side Brest a fortnight ago.

I’m not in favour of the new Champions League format, but if it means PSG, Bayern, Real Madrid and Barcelona aren’t on top of the standings, then surprisingly I’m all for it.

  3. Monaco score late equaliser to deny Zagrebpublished at 10:35 British Summer Time

    Dinamo Zagreb 2-2 Monaco

    Highlights: Dinamo Zagreb 2-2 Monaco

Monaco scored an 89th-minute equaliser from the penalty spot to come from 2-0 down and deny Dinamo Zagreb in torrential conditions in Croatia.

Zagreb, who had been thrashed 9-2 by Bayern Munich in their last Champions League outing, opened the scoring through Petar Sucic on the break on the stroke of half-time.

In heavy rain, which affected both sides' performance, Zagreb added a second through midfielder Martin Baturina's superb curling effort in the 66th minute.

But Monaco, who beat 10-man Barcelona 2-1 last month, halved the deficit through Mohammed Salisu's 74th-minute header.

And, moments after ex-Liverpool winger Takumi Minamino had an effort cleared off the line, Monaco were awarded a penalty after a foul on Folarin Balogun.

Captain Denis Zakaria blasted the spot-kick into the net with one minute of normal time remaining.

By conceding two goals, Dinamo broke the record for most goals conceded in their first two Champions League matches of a single campaign.

Lookman scores as Atalanta thrash Shakhtar Donetsk

Ademola Lookman starred as Atalanta claimed a comfortable Champions League win over Shakhtar Donetsk at the Arena AufSchalke in Gelsenkirchen, Germany.

The Italians have taken four points from their two Champions League fixtures after beginning their campaign with a goalless draw at home to Arsenal.

Their victory over Shakhtar never looked in doubt from the moment former Charlton and Everton forward Lookman created their 21st-minute opener with a curling delivery from the left that was flicked home by Albania captain Berat Djimsiti.

Having already rattled the Shakhtar crossbar, Lookman then doubled Atalanta's lead a minute before the interval, with a placed effort into the bottom corner from Sead Kolasinac's pass.

Gian Piero Gasperini's side put the contest beyond doubt three minutes after the restart when Raoul Bellanova capitalised on some hesitant defending to nod in Davide Zappacosta's cross at the back post.

Shakhtar, who are playing their home matches at Schalke's ground due to Ukraine's ongoing conflict with Russia, struggled to trouble the visiting defence and have one point from two games.

JoeD on X: This is the problem with the new Champions League format - Bayern don't get the chance for revenge in the return leg. Without home & away ties, luck comes into the league positions - hoping to draw the stronger teams at home, and slightly weaker teams away.

Feyenoord beat Girona in action packed game

Girona scored two own goals and missed a penalty as they fell to a narrow defeat in their first Champions League home match.

The Spanish side took the lead through 34-year-old defender David Lopez in the 19th minute, but were pegged back four minutes later when Quinten Timber's header deflected in off Girona midfielder Yangel Herrera.

Teenager Antoni Milambo put Feyenoord 2-1 ahead in the 33rd minute and the Dutch side were given a penalty moments later for a foul on Timber, but goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga denied Ayase Ueda from the spot.

In the second half Girona had a goal disallowed and were then gifted a penalty of their own after Timon Wellenreuther fouled Bojan Miovski in the box, but the Feyenoord keeper redeemed himself to save the former Aberdeen forward's spot-kick.

Donny van de Beek equalised for the hosts, scoring his first goal for the club since joining from Manchester United in the summer.

But Girona were denied a first point in the competition after their defender Ladislav Krejci turned Igor Paixao's 79th-minute cross into his own net.

Girona also lost to Paris St-Germain in their Champions League opener after a 90th-minute own goal.

With three they equalled Fenerbahce's record for most own goals in a single Champions League season, but became the first side to net an own goal in each of their first two games in the competition.

After a glorious night at Villa Park and a long drive home, and no sleep after the school run I went to my local famous coffee shop in Ilkley, Yorkshire (BBC Sport pundit Rory Smith goes there). The staff gave me (the Villa really) a round of applause - and so did some confused customers. I watched the game in 1982 on TV aged nine with my sadly departed father and sister. It was a day for the Villa family, but a huge thanks to all the other fans who love the game and said well done.

Champions League Highlights: RB Leipzig 2-3 Juventus

Juventus produced a remarkable comeback after having goalkeeper Michele di Gregorio sent off to beat RB Leipzig in the Champions League.

Di Gregorio was dismissed in the 59th minute for a handball outside the box with the score at 1-1, after Dusan Vlahovic cancelled out Benjamin Sesko's goal for the hosts.

Slovenia forward Sesko restored Leipzig's lead with a 65th-minute penalty before Serbia striker Vlahovic made it 2-2.

In a thrilling match, Francisco Conceicao scored in the 82nd-minute to make it two wins out of two for Juventus in this season's competition.

It was a fine win for the Italians, who had suffered a double blow with injuries to captain Gleison Bremer and Nicolas Gonzalez early in the game.

RB Leipzig, who host Liverpool on 23 October, have failed to win in their last four games in the Champions League.

Unreal atmosphere last night at Villa Park. We are making it into a fortress again and could be as iconic as Anfield. Unbelievable transformation under Unai Emery but, given his managerial record, we can't be too surprised. What a time to be a Villa fan!

  13. Gallagher concedes a penalty as Benfica thrash Atleticopublished at 09:50 British Summer Time

    Benfica 4-0 Atletico Madrid

Champions League Highlghts: Benfica 4-0 Atletico Madrid

It also proved to be a difficult night for Real's rivals Atletico Madrid.

Conor Gallagher conceded a penalty as Benfica thrashed Atletico to continue their perfect start to this season's Champions League.

Kerem Akturkoglu gave the Portuguese side the lead in Lisbon with a composed 13th minute finish.

Four minutes after coming on as part of a triple half-time substitution, Gallagher was deemed to have caught Benfica's Vangelis Pavlidis in the penalty area after a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) check.

Former Real Madrid forward Angel Di Maria duly converted from the spot.

England midfielder Gallagher, who joined Atletico from Chelsea this summer, saw his night go from bad to worse as he was beaten to the ball by Alexander Bah from a Benfica corner, as he headed home the hosts' third in the 75th minute.

Orkun Kokcu added a fourth from the penalty spot after a sloppy foul from Reinildo Mandava.

Pavlidis hit the post for the home side just before half-time, while Atletico struck the crossbar at 1-0 down in the first half through Samuel Lino's mishit cross.

Benfica narrowly beat Red Star Belgrade 2-1 in their Champions League opener last month. Atletico had defeated RB Leipzig by the same scoreline.

  14. David hits Lille winner to shock Real Madridpublished at 09:41 British Summer Time

    Lille 1-0 Real Madrid

    Media caption,

Champions League Highlights: Lille 1-0 Real Madrid

We'll keep bringing you more Aston Villa reaction, but in the meantime let's have some recaps of the other action on Wednesday, which included holders Real Madrid falling to their first Champions League defeat since May 2023 as Lille upset them at the Pierre-Mauroy Stadium.

It was also a first loss for Carlo Ancelotti's side in 36 matches in all competitions - dating back to 18 January against Atletico Madrid in the Copa del Rey.

Jonathan David scored the only goal from the penalty spot for Lille after a video assistant referee (VAR) review ruled that Real's French midfielder Eduardo Camavinga had blocked Edon Zhegrova’s free-kick with his arm.

The hosts were superb throughout and more than merited their victory to get up and running in this season's competition following a 2-0 loss to Sporting in their opening game.

Prior to scoring from the spot, Canada international David was denied by a superb double save from visiting keeper Andriy Lunin as Bruno Genesio's team dominated proceedings.

Brazilian forward Endrick, who at 18 years and 73 days became the youngest ever player to start for Real in the competition, was unable to make an impact, while England midfielder Jude Bellingham also struggled to impose himself on the game.

  16. 'From the hundreds of matches I’ve covered, that stands out as something very special'published at 09:29 British Summer Time

    Aston Villa 1-0 Bayern Munich

    John Murray
Commentator on BBC Radio 5 Live

Of the many hundreds and hundreds of matches I’ve covered over the years, that stands out as something very special.

Walking up to Villa Park, you could feel the anticipation in the air. I passed by the Champions Wall on the outside of the Holte End where the winners of 1982 in Rotterdam are honoured.

So many of the ingredients you need for a great occasion were there in bundles, whether it was the history or purely the novelty value of the great old ground hosting a match in this competition for the best part of half a century. And it duly delivered.

The cost of tickets for this match was something of a bone of contention. The cheapest standard-priced tickets (i.e. non-season ticket holder or concessions) was £85, and, of course, any number of dyed-in-the-wool Villa fans will have been priced out by that.

But those who could afford it will feel they got in return something that turned out to be priceless.

In fairness to [Ollie] Watkins, he definitely put the work in [before coming off]. There was lots of space in there but [Jhon] Duran. I think it's five winning goals [for him] so far this season, with only one start. One thing about football, you need to make sure when you change your positions, you do it early, you do it just in time, make sure people are set.

For once Bayern Munich aren't set. All that aggressive play they had previously was from a structure but that structure isn't there anymore. It's a great ball from Pau Torres, which then puts Duran in a great position. Duran's awareness and the ability to finish like that is an absolutely fantastic moment.

I don’t know how Duran scored that goal. He’s timed it absolutely spot on. The ball has travelled 60 yards and you know what, he made it look so easy.

As a centre forward, to put yourself in the right position while the ball is in the air, to hold off the defender, know where the keeper is, to execute it.

That was an outstanding, outstanding finish from a young boy who is just making his way in the game. Honestly, I couldn’t be happier for the fans.
