"My situation hasn't changed and I'm really looking forward to this camp now. It was a real challenge, picking the squad, the players that we've had to leave out. That's a big enough challenge without worrying about [managerial] candidates and the rest of it."

England's interim head coach Lee Carsley on Dominic Solanke: "Dom's a player I'm fully aware of having worked with him in the past. He was really close to being in the last squad but got injured just before selection.

"He did so well at Bournemouth and now he's taken that form into Spurs. He's got a lot of really good attributes that I really like, as well as being a really nice person. He's extremely talented and it's a good that we've got him."

  10. Nedum Onuoha Q&A - Celtic's Dortmund disasterpublished at 13:55 British Summer Time 3 October

Nedum Onuoha Q&A - BBC Sport football expert answers your questions

Rob in Brighton: Celtic’s high press and expansive play was ruthlessly exposed by Dortmund this week, but Brendan Rodgers said after the game that he would not alter the team’s style of play. This style brings success more often than not for Celtic domestically, and was effective against Slovan Bratislava, but does there need to be flexibility in their style of play to have more success against higher quality teams?

Nedum: The game vs Dortmund is a very interesting one as I don’t believe they played as badly as the result would suggest. But obviously the result matters most.

I think Rodgers has assembled a team which likely plays to its strengths when they use that expansive style. Changing it at times certainly shouldn’t be frowned upon but as a coach I’d imagine consistency will be more beneficial long term for buy in from the players.

Each game is obviously different in terms of how the opposition will play and how good they are but days like that against Dortmund are really few and far between and so for me, I wouldn’t use it as a reason to change. Yet.

  11. Mbappe not selected for Francepublished at 13:50 British Summer Time 3 October

  12. Nedum Onuoha Q&A - England's young prospectspublished at 13:40 British Summer Time 3 October

Nedum Onuoha Q&A - BBC Sport football expert answers your questions

James: Hi Nedum. Who would you like to see named in the next England squad who wasn't in the last one? Is there anyone from the U21s who you think merits a place, maybe Adam Wharton after his performances last season or one of our young centre-back options like Jarrad Branthwaite and Jarell Quansah?

Nedum: I’d love to see lots of those U21s get their chance but it’s also a wonder about well, who should be left out?

I think in time, Quansah and Branthwaite will play but in this next international break. I would like to see Morgan Rogers get an opportunity. His start to the season and life in the Premier League overall has been special, and I think he’d be a popular selection.

    Alex Howell
BBC football news reporter at St George's Park

Tottenham striker Dominic Solanke is expected to be called up by interim head coach Lee Carsley for the latest England squad.

It will be the first time in seven years that Solanke will be involved with the Three Lions after his first and only appearance came in 2017 in a friendly with Brazil.

The 27-year-old has scored three goals in six appearances for Spurs since signing from Bournemouth in a £65m deal.

  16. 'Bologna were the better team'published at 13:21 British Summer Time 3 October

    Liverpool 2-0 Bologna

    Rory Smith
Chief soccer correspondent for the New York Times, on MOTD

Bologna were the better team, they did brilliantly after the first 10, 15 minutes when they looked a bit overpowered.

The courage with which they played, they kept putting the pressure on Liverpool. This is a team that lost two of its key players in the summer, lost its manager to Juventus, and is showing signs under Vincenzo Italiano of becoming a competitive team again.

But the problem Italiano seems to have is really nice football but no cutting edge. That is what probably happened to Bologna.

  19. Great that Carsley faces selection headache - Kanepublished at 13:04 British Summer Time 3 October

    Nick Mashiter
    BBC Sport football news reporter

Captain Harry Kane is excited about the depth of England's attacking talent ahead of linking up with the Three Lions squad next week.

The Bayern Munich striker is fit to be included in interim head coach Lee Carsley's squad for the Nations League games against Greece and Finland.

Cole Palmer, Ollie Watkins and Phil Foden all withdrew from duty due to injury in September but should return while Tottenham striker Dominic Solanke is rumoured to be in Carsley's squad this time.

Kane shook off an ankle injury to play 90 minutes in Bayern's 1-0 Champions League defeat at Aston Villa on Wednesday.

"We have a lot of great competition for places in that area, especially from a striker’s point of view, that is great to see," he said. "That is what you want. The manager has got a headache, that’s for sure.

"We have some great talent in the country. Everyone is playing at a really high level, in big games, in big moments, and it will be interesting to see who will be there next week.

"From an England point of view, it is great to see everyone doing well."

  20. Nedum Onuoha Q&A - Liverpool's chances this seasonpublished at 12:58 British Summer Time 3 October

Nedum Onuoha Q&A - BBC Sport football expert answers your questions

Pat, Watford: Hello Nedum. With all the attention yesterday on Aston Villa beating Bayern, and rightly so, Liverpool picked up another win. Seem to be going under the radar in Champions League, and with the main focus in the Premier League on Man City and Arsenal, Liverpool have quietly gone top… Just how far or how successful do you think Liverpool could be this season?

Nedum: That’s a really good question. Talent wise, they’re as good as City and Arsenal in my opinion and their start has been really impressive. But that’s more so because we didn’t know what they would look like with their new manager.

We now see familiar faces shining and it’s feels like something we’ve felt before.

I imagine most people are just wary of overreacting but I imagine they’ll be there or thereabouts when trophies are being played for come the end of the season… with continued good health of that talented squad they have.
