Barrow continued their impressive start to the season by easing to victory over Newport County to go top of League Two.

Stephen Clemence’s side took a first-half lead when goalkeeper Nick Townsend failed to deal with Sam Foley’s cross, with Elliot Newby the quickest to react.

But Townsend did well to deny Gerard Garner from doubling the lead moments later, with the ball heading for the top corner.

Summer signing and former Wrexham defender Theo Vassell made sure of victory 10 minutes from time, heading home a Ben Jackson cross.

County have now lost three consecutive league games and drop to 13th in the table.

Newport manager Nelson Jardim told BBC Sport Wales:

“I think they (Barrow) showed why they are the top of the league, they are a good team, they play good football.

"They are also a physical team; if you look at every one-v-one in the game, we lost most of them.

"Our boys fought, they gave everything they had, we could see that they were trying hard but we have to accept sometimes that the opposition is better than you."
